. COMBINATION UTILITY BAG Filed Aug. 15, 1951 lNVE/VTOF- #5441): C. SMITH.
Patented Aug. 31, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE ooMBrNATIoN UTILITY BAG Nellie 0. Smith, New Yoi-k, N. Y. Application August 15, 1951. Serial No. 241,967
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a combination utility bag and moreparticularly to a bag which is adapted to be used within a hand bag or the like for containing small articles, such as cosmetics, and which includes a separate compartment for containing different articles.
An object of the present invention is to provide such abag having an elongated compartment which is particularly adapted to carry a sanitary napkin and which may be folded, relatively to the bag, in such a manner as to render the said compartment unnoticeable and so positioned that it will not interfere with the normal use of the bag.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a bag having a main compartment for ordinary articles, such as cosmetics or change, and a separate elongated compartment which is separately accessible and which may be folded and fastened to the exterior of the bag so as to prevent the portion of the bag forming the said separate compartment from interfering with the use of the main compartment.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will be more clearly understood from the following description and the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a bag embodying my invention and showing the separate compartment positioned against the side of the main compartment.
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the said bag.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 4. i
Fig. 4 is a rear view of the bag partly broken away and showing the separate compartment in extended position.
i Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of bag on line 5-5 of Fig, 4;.
Fig. 6 is a sectional plan view on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 7 is a sectional end view on line 'l-l of Fig. 4.
i In the embodiment of my invention which is illustrated in the drawings, my improved bag comprises a casing 5 which provides the main compartment 6 that has a suitable lining l and a closure, preferably in the form of a zipper 8, is provided along the upper edge of the said casing.
The present invention is particularly directed to the provision of an elongated compartment for containing an elongated article, such as a sanitary napkin and the like, and so positioning the article relatively to the bag that it will not be prominent.
Such an elongated compartment is provided by an extension 9 which projects laterally from one side of the casing 5 and forms a compartment w for the elongated article. The said extension is provided along the lower edge thereof with a fastener, such as a zipper I! which runs for the full length of the extension and the easing to retain the article in the elongated compartment.
It will be noted that the lining i divides the compartment 6 from the compartment i t so that the contents of the compartment It will be entirely separated from those of the compartment 6.
In the preferred construction shown, the lining 5 depends from the upper edge of the casing 5 into the elongated compartment it but, if desired, the compartment It may be provided with a lining, not shown, to further separate this compartment from the interior of the upper portion of the casing 5.
As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the elongated extension 9 is provided with snap fastener members l2 and may be folded over against the back of the casing 5 and secured in said position by engagement of the said fasteningmembers with the cooperative fastening members It that are provided upon the back of the casing.
In the use of my improved bag, a sanitary napkin may be stored within the compartment 13 and the extension 9 then folded and fastened against the back of the main casing 5 without interfering with the use of the compartment ii. When desired, the contents of the said elongated compartment may be taken therefrom by simply unsnapping the fasteners 12 and i3, straightening out the extension 9 and opening the zipper l l.
I claim:
1. A bag including a main portion having a main compartment therein with an opening adjacent to and along the upper edge of the said bag, a portion extending laterally from the side of said main portion, the said main and extending portions forming an elongated compartment having an opening adjacent to and along the lower edge of the bag and extending across the said main and extending portions, and separable fastening means for the openings of said compartments.
2. A bag including upper and lower edges, a main portion having a compartment therein opening adjacent the upper edge of the bag, a portion of lesser depth than the main portion extending from the said main portion and continuing laterally from the side thereof, a separate compartment in said main portion extending into the extending portion and having an opening along the lower edge of the bag and extending across the said main and extending portions, the said extending portion being foldable upon the main portion, separate separable fastening means for closing said openings, and means for securing the extending portion in folded position.
3. A bag including two portions foldable upon each other, the first of said portions being provided with pocket forming means extending across the width only of said first portion, and said first and second portions having pocket forming means extending across the width of both of said portions and overlying said first pocket forming means, separate openings for said pocket forming means along opposite edges of said bag, and separable fastening means for said openings.
