WALLAGED. WALKER, or MEADVILLE. PEnNsYLvAmA.
CARRYING cAsn.
Application filed November 21, 1922. Serial No. 602,449.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WALLACE D. \VALKER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Meadville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carrying Cases, of a specification.
is invention relates to carrying cases and has particular reference to roll-up cases used for carrying "toilet articles, tools, display samples, etc;
A Well known typeof case now on the market for this purpose consists of a flexible sheet carrying on its interior loops or pockets to hold the articles, with straps running through to the outer or finished sides so that when rolled up the straps are brought around and buckled or otherwise fastened. These straps are inconvenient to handle and generally unsatisfactory, although permitting the case to be-rolled large when filled with articles or small when empty or only which the following is partly filled, but in all cases rolling more or less round. Other similar cases may dispense with straps for fastening the row in favor of a-series of snap fasteners, but snap fasteners are not reliable and do not furnish the'desired maximum of convenience and accessibility.
According to this invention a flexible split tube is provided to constitute the covering case proper, and attached to the tube is the rollable flexible portion carrying the loops or pockets for the articles and connected to the tube so that when rolled it can be inserted through the slit in the tube and the tube closed by fasteners thereon. These fasteners may be of any desired type, such as snaps, short straps or the like, but I prefertype fastener such as shown in patent to Sundback, No. 1,243,458 of October 16,1917, which furnishes the desired quick]: closing and opening, and at the same time permits the outer tube to be slit along one side to the desired distance to receive the roll carrying portion. The capacity is limited by the circumference ofthe tube, but ordinarily there is sufficient leeway so that the tube will only be partially filled, thus tending to form a flattened package when rolled up and closed as compared with'the round packages formed by devices of this character now in common use. For carrying personal articles in a traveling bag or small tools in an automobile,
flexible or roll inside.
respectively secured the stringers door pocket, etc., the flattened package is preferable. In practice, a carrying case of this type can be built for'the desired purpose, either of expensive leather for the tube with fancy interior lining, loops, or pockets.
or can be built of cheap material where tools are tobe carried, yet being quickly accessible and closed up and securely holding the articles from dropping out at the ends.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view showing one form of device opened; v
'Fig.' 2='is a perspective view showing the flattened closed roll, and
Fig. 3 shows the tube opened with the The device comprises generally a flexible back 1 having flaps 2, 2 and provided with fixed straps 3, 3 with loops 4, 4 to receive the holding straps 5, 5, the latter being secured to the strap 3 at 6 and containing articles 7 as shown. Instead of the loops and straps as shown, pockets, or both pockets and loops can be provided, as desired.
One end of the back 1 is secured to flexible tube -8, the length of the tube being somewhat greater than the Width of the back 1 so that the tube will cover the back 1 when rolled and inserted within. The tube is slit from one end to ornearly to the other end to form edges 10 and to these edges are ing interlocking members 12 as shown in the aforesaid patent. Mounted on the stringers for controlling the engagement of said in terlocking members 12, is the slide operating device 13 having the pull 14 for positively pulling the slide 13 in opposite directions,
the pull sliding from end to end on rib 15 as shown in the Sundback Patent #1,302,606, dated May 6, 1919, according to the direction in which actuated.
The tube will preferably have tabs 16 for the fingers to grasp in opening and closing, and the flaps 2 may have snap buttons 17 for fastening together before rolling if desired. As will be observed, the base 1 is narrower than the length of tube 8 to an extent suflicient to permit the slide 13 when the tube is opened to clear the roll on one end as seen in Fig. 3, and the tube overlapping the base 1 on the other end suficiently to enclose it when rolled, as for example in Fig. 3.
The operation will be evident from Figs.
2 and 3, it being seen that the flaps 2 are 11 carryfirst folded over, then theback 1 rolled up toward the tube and the roll inserted through the opened tube and then the tube closed. This holds the articles from dropping out, but it is within the scope of this invention to provide a flexible closure iece like a bellows for either or both ends 0 the tube so that a completely closed article is provided. Another obvious'variation within the scope of the. invention is to have the fastener run around three sides of the tube as in Fig. 3 from the numeral 18 to the left, then up to the top and then to the right to oint 19 as the fastener used is sufficiently flexible to bend out of its own plane to do this. This forms a convenient and simple closure for the entire article. What is claimed is:
1. A carrying case comprising a flexible tube slit along one side, an article containing flexible base secured at one end inside said tube with its other end free and capable of being rolled into said tube through the slit, and fastening means for closing said slit with the rolled base therein.
2. A carrying. case comprising a tube slit along one side, an article containing flexible base secured at one end inside said tube adjacent said slit with its other end free and capable of being rolled into said tube through the slit, and fastening means for closing said slit with the rolled base therein.
flexible neoaaoe comprising a flexible 3. A. carrying case tube slit along one side, an article containing flexible base secured at one end inside said tube adjacent said slit, with its other end free and ca able of bein rolled into said tube throug the slit, an slider controlled interlocking members along the sides of said slit for fastening the same with the rolled base inside the tube.
4. A carrying case comprising a tube split from one end toward the other, a flexible base attached to the .tube interior so as to extend out through the tube opening, said base being provided with holding means for articles to be carried, and a sliding interlocking closing device for the tube.
5. lhe combination with a rolled kit, of a case in which said kit is adapted to be carried, said case being provided with a slit permanently closed at at least one end of the slit, and means for closing the slit and retaining the kit within the case.
6. The combination with a flexible tubular casing provided with a longitudinally slit closed at one end, of a rolled kit fastened to and adapted to be inserted into the casing through said slit, and means for closing said slit.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 20th day of November, A. D. 1922.
