GIDEON RIETVELD,.OF KNOXVILLE, IOWA.
MATCH-BOX.
Application led February 21, 1916 To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, GIDEON Rrn'rvnLD, a citizen of the United, States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Marion, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the 'following `to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to match boxes.
It is my purpose to provide a match box embodying a body section and aremovable drawer section, each of said sections being made from a single sheet of metal bent to the requisite shape.
It is my further purpose to provide a match box of the type named in which the matches can be delivered singly and which will possess the desired features of simplicity, efficiency and durability, and which may be manufactured and sold at a relatively small cost. l
l/Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim. Y
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and inwhich- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the coml plete match box with the spring cover in open position and showing the manner of delivering a single match from the box; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the complete match box with the cover in closed position; n
Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2 with the cover in open position; Fig. 4, a plan view of the blank from which the body of the box is made, the scoring or lines upon which the blank is to be bent being represented by dotted lines; Fig. 5, a view showing the body partially folded; Fig. 6, a plan view of the blank from which the drawer of the box is made, and Fig. 7, a perspective view of the drawer folded to shape. Fig. 8 is a central transverse section through the device in closed position.
Referring to the drawings and particularly to Fig. 4 A indicates the blank of sheet .metal from which .the heb' 0f the bex ,is '90 Specification of Letters Patent.

be formed. This blank is cut as shown in Fig. 4, thatis to say with a substantially rectangular body section B which is to be folded to constitute the main portion of the body, and a relatively long tongue C which extends from the section B and which tongue section when bent is to form the spring cover. It will be noted that the inner end edge of the section B adjacent each side of the section C is curved convexly as at 10 while the tongue C is provided on each side with a lateral extension 11 having curved end edges 12. The free end of the section C isprovided with an extension 13 and just inward of this extension said section is provided with serrations 14 on which the matches are adapted to be struck. In forming the body of the box the longitudinal section B of the blank is iirst bent or folded on the longitudinal parallel lines a, so that two side sections Z) are formed at right angles to the section c, which latter constitutes the front of the box. turn folded or bent inward on the lines e and in this way a guideway is formed for receiving the removable drawer section of the box. The blank now appears substantially as shown in Fig. 5. lThe extensions 11 are then folded at right angles to the section C on the lines f. The tongue C is then folded so as to constitute the spring cover of the box, the inner end of the tongue being bent on the convexly curved portions 1() while the free end of the tongue is bent on the transverse line g and then on the transverse line 7L so as to form the outer end portion of the box. By folding the tongue on the line 7L the extension 13 is provided with a rib 15 for detachably engaging over the slightly extended edge portion 16 of the section B to secure the cover in closed position. By simply pushing outwardon the rib 15 with the thumb the cover is easily released.
The drawer section of the box is also formed from a sheet metal blank indicated generally at D. This blank includes a central section E, oppositely disposed tongues F and G, and oppositely disposed tongues H and I. The blank D is provided with a lilach side section 79 is inl plying the drawer to the body of the box is clearly shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3. By ro- Viding the slot 17 it willY be obvious that the matches can be delivered singly as clearly nection with the outeroor tubular portion of a safety match box.
YWhat is claimed is:
A match boX formed from a metal blank bent to produce a vtubular section and a spring cover adapted in closed position to overlie the outer end of the tubular section, and a -drawer section removably engaged in the tubular secti'on,said drawer section having a longitudinal slot in its bottom and extending into its outer end wall to form a discharge opening for a single match.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature7 in the presence of two witnesses.
