To all whom t may concern.:
vlBe itv known that I, THOMASIEARNJLV VERTNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improve` ments in Tops Tor Ash-Cans, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a top for an ash can and similar receptacles, and has for its object the production of aneetheient means whereby the door journaled to said top is normally held in a closed position.
Another object ot this inventionv is the production of a means tor guiding the ashes and other refuse upon the door.
lilith these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangement of parts as Will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
ln the accompanying drawings Figure l is the vperspective view ot the top attached to a receptacle. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the top; Fig. 3 is a rear vieW et the top showing the door in position. Fig. 4- is a blank view of the door.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals l designates a receptacle upon which is mounted the top 2. This top 2 is provided with the flange 3 which is adapted to tit upon the upper portion of the receptacle l and hold the top thereon. The top 2 is provided With a rectangular opening d Ywhich is adapted ton be closed by the door 5. The portion stamped from the top 2 is rolled. back and toi-ins an inverted U- shape guide 6. Positioned on the opposite side of the rectangular' opening 4 is a slanting guide 7, which guide also forms a oasing tor the elongated Weight S carried by the door A guide 9 which is provided with the laterally extending flange 10, is post tioned at each end of the rectangular openine' tand atyright angles with the inverted ttshape guide G. This guide 1sy adapted to eiose the space between the lil-shape guide y 5 and the slanting guide 7, and is held in suchY position. by means of the rivets 11.
lt iwill be seen that since the inner tace ot the inverted U-shape uide 6 and two end guides 9 extend at right angles relative tothe rectangular opening t all the refuse which is 'emptied into the can will have a clear drop upon the door. lt is further obvious that the strain upon the rivets l1 is greatly reduced since one end of the guide f)l conforms to the contour of the inverted U-shape lguide G and the other end tapers donn andI abuts against the slanting guide 7 and in this manner eliminates the longitudinal nmyement of said guidon The door 5 is formed from a blank and has a rectangular body portion provided `on one side with a reduced portion l2.y It Will beseen that this reduced portion 12 is'bent to form a pocket foi-,the elongated weight 8. The outer edges of thebody portion `are scored shown at 13 so that said edges may be easily bent back to prevent any cutting edges upon the door. A plate 14- made in the form ot a sleeve is riveted to the door 5 adjacent the reduced portion 12, and is journaled upon the journal pin l5, and in this manner torinsan eiiieient means foru allowing the door to operate. The outer ends et the journal lpin 15 pass through the flange 3 and rest in the elongated reinforcing plates 16.
It will be seen that by use of the guiding portions formed upon the top of the can, when the ashes or other refuse is thrown upon the door, any particles that may happen to drop to one side of the rectangular opening will be guided upon the door by means of these portions. It Will also be seen that by use of the Weight mounted upon the rear portion ot' the door, said door will always be normally held in a closed position, butwhen it is desired to throw something into the can the weight will heraised into the slanting guide 7 and be held in such a position as will place it entirely out of the Way ot' any refuse that may be in the can at the time.
By carefully considering llig. l, it will be seen that the guide G is formed from the material eut from the opening 4 and by bending the guide G in the manner as illustrated in Figs. i and 2 it will be seen that' a very efficient guiding member has been produced Jfor rliif'eetingashes or other material to the openingll.
From the foregoing description it' will be seen that a very eiiicient and simple device has heen produced which may be made ot' sheet metal and thereby may be manui'fae^ tured at a minimum cost. It will also be seen that the top Q is provided upon its flange 3 with lifting handles t7 whereby the top may be taken H the can When so desired. n
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is :-Y
l. In a receptacle ,of the. class described, comprising a body portion, a top mounted upon said body, a flange formed upon said topand adapted to engage the upper side of said body, a. rectangular opening formed in said top, guiding portions formed upon the y opposite sid-es of said opening, a door earried by said top, .an elongated Weight earried by said door, reinforcing plates carried by said flange,a journal pin carried by said top having its outer ends journaled in said reinforcing plates, a plate bent to form a sleeve mounted upon said journal pin and riveted to said top, whereby the door is held in an operable position in said -top and adapted to be automatically closed by said elongated weight.
2. In a receptacle of the class described comprising a body portion, a top mounted 'upon said body portion, said top provided with an opening, a substantially Uv-shape guide formed from the portion eut to forni said opening, a slanting uide mounted upon the opposite side of said opening and adapted to form a easing, a door mounted,
upon said top, and a weight carried by said door and entering said casing upon the opening of said door.
3. A receptacle of the class describedcomprising a body portion, a top mounted upon said body, said top provided with an opening, a door carried by said top and ada ted to close said opening, said door formed rom a vblank comprising a body portion provided upon one side with a reduced port-ion, a weight carried by said door and adapted to hold the saine in a vclosed position, the reduced portion of said door being bent to form a pocket for holding said Weight in position.
