IMPROVEMENT IN S-PRING BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,602, dated October 3, 1871; antedated September 27, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. GRUT, of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improved Spring Bed-Bottom; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan or top view of a spring bedbottom with my ilnprovement attached, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures of the drawing.
The nature and object of my invention consists in the construction oi' a knuckle-jointed brace and the attachment thereof to the sides and ends of the frames of a spring bed-bottom so as to prevent lateral motion ofthe top fram e, thereby protecting the springs between the frames and keeping them at all times in proper position.
In the drawing, A represents the bottom, and B the top frame of an ordinary spring-bed bottom. Upon each side, as well as upon each end of said frames A B I attach two knuckle-jointed braces C C made of Wood or iron, or both combined, but preferably of cast-iron, on account of its cheapness, strength, durability, and being less liable to bend and get out of order. One end of each of said braces is iirmly and securely fastened to the outer side of frame A, and the other end to the outer side of frame B,by means of a screw, a, or other suitable and equivalent fastening, the ends of said braces being previously and properly periorated to admit of such fastening, thereby preventing any lateral motion ofthe top frame B, which is essential to a due protection of the springs between said frames. Adjacent to each of said braces, and to and upon the sides and ends of frame A, is secured a metallic stop-pin, c, projecting from the outer side of said frame A, which acts as supports to the braces, when said bed-bottom is in use, to prevent the frames being pressed together, and also to prevent an undue pressure upon the springs attached to and between said frames. I cover each of said stoppins c with leather or rubber, to protect said braces from wear when coming in contact therewith.
Having thus described the nature and object or my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The braces C C', united by a single knucklejoint, and pivoted to frames A and B, in combination with stop-pins` c, when covered with leather or rubber, substantially as and for the purpose described.
