which the following is a. full and clear specification.

My invention relates in general to devices, such as shaving sticks and their receptacles. and is applicable to other articles which are handled or used in fn ore or less the same way, that is to say, by a rubbing on. action which results-in a gradual wearing away of the material applied. llunierousexamples of such substances. mighthe cited, and for illustration I may refer to medicinal artieles, such as menthol pencils, alum. and similar pencils, lubricating sticks, such as graphite, buffing and polishing materials, such as nouge and like compositions and coloring, sticks, such as charcoal, crayons, and the like While my invention is thus not limited to its embodiment in the form of a shaving" stick device, this class of articles is one which is perhaps more generally known than the others and I shall, thercfore, refer to the device as a shaving stick in the following specification and claims, it being); understood that the other articles of the character mentioned are erpiivalents and meant 'to be included as embraced by the invention.

It has heretofore'been proposed to form shaving sticks in cylindrical or other form and inclose them in one way or another in a cylindrical box of metal, or thelike. The boX comprises a body portion and removable cover or can. In some forms of these previously known devices the shaving stick has been provided at one end with a band or cap, which may form a portion of thehoX referred to or which serves as a ineansfor securing the shaving; stick to the main body \of the box. The shaving; sticks heretofore known are of such size and dimensions that their entire consumption involves a con siderable period of time and before the are entirely used up the soap becomes dry and hard, and thus the soap loses certain oi desired properties or qualities. Referring more specifically to said drawing, 10. indicates the holder portion ofthe case, provided with a' Hat bottom, 11, by

Fig. 1, sp un together with an intervening backing or diaphragm 15 of cardboard or the like. The two halves 16, 17 of the soap are in thisjnstance pressed into the band 13, 14: against the diaphragm 15 and caused to expand into the threaded portions and thus be firmly secured. It will be understood that the use of the'diaphragm 15, and the formation of the band in two sectionsis optional, these features having been illustrated as showing a construction which is easily carried out in practical manufacture. The diaphragm' 15 furthermore is useful in pro-' viding the equality of length in the two ends of the stick, and furthermore is effective in sealing the reserve portion of the soap and preventing its dislodgment. The diaphragm 15, may, however be left out altogether in the case that a single stick of soap 16 should be used. This modification is illustrated in Fig. 5. .The twohalves 13 and 1 1 of the band are, as above referred to, spun together.

The spun over portion 18 of one half of the band forms a medial rim and is preferably milled 01' knurled as indicated, to facilitate the introduction and removal of the stick in the holder 10 while at the same time forming a positive stop for the two halves of the case and presenting a neat'appearance.

The upper or cover portion of the case is indicated at 19 and in general dimensions may be approximately equal to the holder portion 10 of the case. The top of the cover is preferably rounded as indicated at 20, so as to distinguish the two portions of the case in use. The cover 19 is suitably secured in place as, for example, by means of imipressions 21, which snap over the threads (if the band.

It will be observed by reference to Figs.

- 1 and 2 of the drawing that the two portions 10 and 19 of. the case do not actually i this feature as-a specific element of invention contact with each other. I wish to point out,

that while I do not intend that the invention should be limited to a construction in which the two halves of thecase are secured to- .gether by engagement with a third member interposed between them, still I do regard and prefer to form the case and band so as to cooperate together in this way, as the insertion and reversal of the scan within the holder is greatly facilitated by the prominence ofthe band and furthermore the positive stop thus provided for the soap and the two portions of the case, is a feature of practical convenience and utility.

While I regard the wrapping of the ordinary shaving stick in tin foil or the like. to

preserve it, as an inefficient and inconvenient ezgpedient, it will be apparent that in the present instance the wrapping of the two portions of the soap may still be carried out, without interference with the general principles and operation of my invention, The location of the band 13,14 at the central zone of the soap, with the consequent subdivision of the case 10, 19,into two halves of approximately equal dimensions, not only provides the conditions referred to in connection with the use and preservation of theysoap itself, but at the same time involves a material saving in the drawing operations performed in producing this style of case, rather than one in which substantially the entire depth is made up of a single piece of metal. It will be seen that in effect the two halves of the soap constitute a single bar, secured at its middle zone in the band which is invertibly mounted in the open end of the holder portion 10 .of the case, the projecting portion of the soap being inclosed by the cover portion 19 of the case when not in use.

I claim:

1. A shaving stick device comprising in combination a bar of soap, a band permanently secured -to the said bar of soap substantially midway between its two ends, and a case having a holder portion adapted to invertibly receive and engage said band at the open end of said holder portion.

2. A shaving stick device comprising in combination a'bar of soap, a band permanently secured about said bar of soap approximately midway betwcen the two lends thereof, a case having a holder portion adapted to invertibly receive and engage said band at the open end of said holder portion, and a removable cover portion adapted to inclose the projecting portion of the bar of soap.

3. A shaving stick device comprising in. combination a bar of soap, a band having an external medial rim and surrounding an interi or zone of the bar of soap with portions prpjecting to either side of the band and a case therefor comprising a holder portion adapted to invertibly receive and engage said band in its open end and inclose that portion of the soap projecting from one side of said band, and a cover portion adapted to inclose the other portion of said bar ofsoap and removably engage said band with said medial rim interposed between the two portions of the case.

A slaving stick device, comprising in combination a band formed in two parts spun together to form a medial rim, soap fixed therein and projecting therefrom a substantially equal distance at either side, and a cup-shaped holder adapted to invertibly engage said band and seat against said medial rim.

6. A shaving stick device comprising in combination'a band formed in two parts spun together -to form a'medial rim, soap fixed therein and projecting a substantially equal distance ateither side thereof, a cupshaped holder adapted to invertibly engage said band and seat against said medial rim,

and a cover adapted to engage the other side of said band and seat against saidmedial rim.

10. As an improved article of manufaci ture, a stick of soap and a combined holder and case therefor formed in three parts, comprising a central ring secured on the soap stick and provided with oppositely extending screw threads, and two end caps, each provided with terminal screw threads to engage the threads on said ring.

11. As an improved article ofmanufacture, a stick of soap and a combined holder and case therefor formedin three parts, comprising a central ring and two end caps, the central ring having its open ends providedeach with one element of a fastening pair, and the end caps each having its open end provided with a complementary fastening device.
