The object-of -my-invention-isto provide ladevice.thatmay-be-constructed entirely of `plastic material without the-use of metalfor hinging `the cover to the bod-yof the device.
Another object yis i to -provide-a `compact i that is constructed entirely of plastic to which the cover is retained in a closed position due to the resiliency of the material itself.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described that has a molded screen of plastic material which frictionally engages the inner walls of the body.
Other and further objects of my invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds when taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the entire compact in a closed position.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view of the device taken at the line 2-2, in Figure l, and showing the cover in a closed position.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary cross sectional view of the device taken at line 3-3, of Figure 1, showing a portion of the cover in an open position.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the body of the device before assembly.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view of a portion of the cover showing the hinge arrangement integrally molded with the cover.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view of a portion of the body with the retainer cap in position, and
Figure 7 is a fragmentary, cross sectional view of a portion of the assembled hinge construction illustrating the hinge pin mounted on the bearing member and held in position by the retainer cap.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and referring now to the same the character I0 shows a body of a compact annular in contour and with a cover II of a similar contour. Obviously, the shape of the device may be changed to any desired contour, and in no way interferes with its construction or efciency.
The body I0 is shown provided with a shoulder i2 around its entire inside of the vertica1 walls, leaving a chamber I3, providing a receptacle for retaining face powder or the like, forming the contents of the compact, The cover I I is equipped with a flange member I4 extending downward at rig'ht'angle :and engaging the shoulder |12 'of the body IU when the compact isclosed.

The'bodyll is `provided with an elongated 5depression I'I at its rearward end, and vertical bearing pins I8 extend upward from the bottom of the depression I'I at each end thereof.
Retainer caps I9, molded of the same plastic material and of a semi-annular contour at their tops, are adherently embedded into the ends of the depression I'I over the bearing pins I8, after the cover II is placed into position, by engagement of its flange I4 against the shoulder I2 in the vertical Walls of the body IIJ. As the hinge pins I5 are placed in frictional contact with the tops of the bearing pins I8, the retainer caps are inserted and will prevent any sideward or upward movement of the pins I5, thereby providing a hinge construction of the plastic material and having the appearance of an integral structure.
The front of the cover member II is provided with an outwardly extending member 20, having a downwardly projecting lip 2| provided with an inwardly extending retaining member 22. This member 20 engages a depressed slot 23 formed into the front face of the body I 0 and as the cover II is brought down into position the member 22 will snap into a position below the lower face 24 of the body I0 and will be held in position by the resiliency of the plastic material, of which the entire unit is constructed and of which the member 20 is an integral part.
There is a molded screen 25 of plastic material, placed into the chamber I3 of the body IU, to cover the contents of the compact. This screen is provided with a plurality of apertures 26 and frictionally contacts the vertical side walls of the chamber I3 at 21. The screen 25 may be straight, or convex as shown in Figure L3, or may be of a concave contour, as shown in Figure 2. By the user applying pressure on the surface of the screen 25, the contents such as face powder, is forced upward through the apertures 26, to contact with a powder pui or the like. The screen 25 may be constructed of a transparent plastic, if desired, to further enable the user to determine the color of the contents of the compact.
It is manifest to anyone familiar with the art that a device of the character described provides a very desirable unit in which its entire construction is of a molded lplastic material without the l use of metal plates or pins which have a tendency to corrode or become loose with wear. Obviously,
the unit may be constructed in various shapes, y
sizes and colors, and the construction of the hinge assembly, having the retaining caps embedded into the depression I1 and retained rigidly by means of a proper adherent agent produces an effective serviceable product. The plastic screen 25 constructed of the same general type of material provides a smooth serviceable surface far superior to a Wire screen or cloth, and its one piece construction retains the contents Within the chamber of the body without spilling due to its frictional contact with the sides of the chamber.
While I have herein shown a single embodiment of my invention for the purpose of clear disclosure face, said cover portion having a hinge member extending therefrom, said hinge member provided with hinge pins extending outward therefrom on both of its ends, the recess within said body portion provided with upwardly extending bearing pins acting as supports for said hinge pins on said cover portion, and a cap member arranged for engagement with the ends of said recess over said hinge pins to retain said hinge pins in direct contact with said bearing pins and acting as a. means for covering and totally enclosing the ends of said hinge pin.
