Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1916.
Application filed April 4, 1916. Serial No. 88,830.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH J. PRovnNgAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Johnsbury, in the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety envelops and it has for its object to provide an envelop of this character which, when properly folded and sealed, will make it impossible for an unauthorized person to tamper with the contents of said envelop without mutilation of the same which would be immediately detected.
The invention consists in the arrangement of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan view of a blank in unfolded position. Fig. 2 is a view of the envelop folded and sealed. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4c is a cross section taken on line H of Fig. 2.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a sheet of paper or other suitable material, which is so cut as to form end flaps A and A a bottom flap A and a top flap A The end flaps are provided with slots A and the bottom flap has similar slots A, all of which are adapted to register when the end flaps are folded in, and the bottom flap is folded upon said end flaps. The bottom flap A has a flange B which is provided with openings or pockets B which contain a meltable material, as indicated by C, and said flange B is adapted to be folded over on the inside of the end flaps A and A thus formmg the envelop body. The top flap A is provided with long strips of locking tongues A which are adapted to be folded back along the dotted lines A, and said tongues have openings D which, when the tongues are folded back, will form pockets which are filled with a meltable material D. After the matter to be contained in the envelop has been placed therein, the tongues A are inserted through the alining slots A A and A of the end and bottom flaps, and are bent upward and folded fiat so as to bring the meltable material D into contact with the meltable material C carried by the flap B.
It will thus be seen that, by passing a heated iron over the front of the envelop, the meltable materials B and C will be fused together, thereby providing an envelop which will have to be destroyed in order to remove the contents thereof.
What I claim to be new is An envelop comprising a sheet which has wings adapted to be folded over one another to form bottom and end closures, said wings having slots formed in alinement and adapted, when folded, to register with one another, a bottom wing having a-fla-p provided with pockets with meltable material therein, a portion of the blank having a flap provided with tongues spaced apart and projecting therefrom and having openings therein which, when the tongues are folded, are adapted to form pockets with a meltable material therein, said tongues adapted to engage the registering slots, and openings and pockets filled with said meltable material being adapted to contact one with another.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
