SAFETY HASP.
APPucATloN FILED Nov. 6, 1914.

' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented-J une 13, 1916.
Application filed November 6, 1914. Serial No. 870,646.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT E. SrLvIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ballston, in the county of Polk and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Hasps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in safety locking devices, particularly hasps for locking doors and the like and has for its primary object to provide a hasp wherein the attaching strapis offset so that it may be extended through the door to which it is attached and secured upon the inner face thereof but connected otherwise with the hinged staple receiving plate forming a part of the hasp, in the ordinary manner.
Another object is to provide a hasp of the character described that is constructed so that removal of the screws for securing the strap of the hasp from the outside of a door or the like is positively prevented.
Another object of importance is to generally simplify and improve the construction of hasps so as to render them more practical, reliable and efficient in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claim.
With reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout'l the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is an enlarged perspective view of my improved hasp, Fig. 2 is a transverse or longitudinal sectional view showing my hasp attached to a door.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, A designates a door and B'a door frame therefor.
My improved hasp consists of a flat metallicattaching strap 1 that is providedwith a plurality of apertures 2 therein and is tapered toward its free end. Screws or other suitable fastening elements 3 are inserted through the apertures 2 and into the door A.
The inner end of the strap 1 is formed with an inwardly offset portion 4. A rolled ear 5 is formed on the free end edge of the offset portion 4. f
The door A is formed with an aperture 6 extending transversely therethrough adjacent to its free ed e. The right angularly extending portion of the offset portion 4 is extended through the aperture 6 so that thel oEset portion 4 may engage upon the outerl face of the door adjacent to the free edge thereof. A rectangular centrally slotted staple receiving plate`8 is hinged to the offset portion 4. The plate 8 is provided upon one edge with spaced pintle sleeves 9, which receive therebetween the sleeve 5 and aline with said sleeve 9. A hinge pin 10 is inserted through the alined sleeves 9 and 5 and hingedly secures the plate 8 to the strap l. A staple l1 is secured in the frame B and arranged to extend through the slot in the staple receiving plate 8. The hasp is to be locked with a suitable pad lock not shown, in the ordinary manner.
In attaching the device, the strap 1 is secured to the door upon the inner face of the door and has its offset portion 4 disposed upon' the outer face of the door so that the rolled ear 5 is disposed in spaced relation to the free vertical edge of the door. The right angularly extending portion 7 which offsets the inner end of the plate is extended through the aperture 6 in the' door and it will be readily yseen that a person is prevented removing the screws 8 from the outside of the door.
In practice I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated` in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with .the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, propor-v tion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as set forth.
What is claimed is :f- Y
A device of the character described including a door having an aperture adjacent one edge thereof, an attaching strap provided with a plurality ofy openings and secured to the inside of said door in horizontal alinement with the aperture therein, said at- Vtachingstrap bent at right angles into engagement with one edge of said aperture on the inside of the door and extending therethrough, the free end of Said attaching Strap bent into engagement With the outer and opposite edge of the aperture and into 5 horizontal alinement and engagement With the outer side of the door, spaced sleeves formed on said free end of the attaching strap, a centrally slotted staple plate provided with spaced sleeves and adapted to be 1e inserted between said sleeves of the attaching Strap, a pintle inserted through Said sleeves, and a staple secured to a frame and extending through the slot of the staple plate.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature l5 in presence of two Witnesses.
