Description

O. LEAMING.
DOOR SEGURER. v
(Model) Patented Nov. 6, 1883.

INVBNTOR:
ATTORNEYS.
. NITED STATES ATENT' FFICE.
CHRISTOPHER LEAMING, OF NEWHALL, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO IVILLIAM HENRY OARLSON, SAME PLACE.
oooR-sEcuaER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,179, dated November 6, 1883,
Application filed August 1, 1883. (ModeL) ING, of Newhall, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Door-Securer, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
The objectof my invention is to provide a new and improved portable folding device which can be secured'to any door to prevent opening it from the outside, which door-securer is so constructed that it can be adjusted to fit in the space between the edge of the door and the rabbet, whether the said space is large or small; and to this end it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafterfully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specifica tion, in which Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of my improved door-securer, showing the manner in which it,
holds the door closed. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, parts being shown in perspective.
A strip, A, of steel, is provided at one end with a sharp-edged prong, B, and at the opposite end, and on the surface opposite to the one from which the prong projects, a series of flat strips or plates, 0, are fastened by a pintle, D, which terminates on that side of the plate from which the prong B projects in an eye or ring, E, to which a chain or cord, F, is fastened, to the free end of which chain a bolt, G, is fastened, which is of such size that it can be passed through slots H in the strips A and O. A spring, J, is fastened to the outer end of the bolt for the purpose of preventing the bolt from being removed from the strips accidentally, which spring can be folded within a re cess, J, in the bolt.
Doors and their frames warp, and frequent- 1y (especially old doors) the space between the free edge of the door and the rabbet is quite great, and a door-securer of considerable'thick ness would be required, as a thin one would drop out. In new doors this space is very small, and a very thin door-securer is required.
My door-securer can be used in all cases, for if the space between the edge of the door and the jamb is very small, the single strip A is used. If this space is larger, one or more strips or plates, C, are swung over the strip A until the door-securer fills the space between the door and the jamb. The prong Bis placed against the jamb, and the door is closed, thereby forcing the prong into the jamb, and then the bolt G is passed through the apertures H to prevent the opening of the door. The bolt G is enlarged toward one end, and has the spring J at the outer end, sothat it cannot be worked through the plates A G by shaking or vibrating the door. If the bolt is to be withdrawn, the free end of the spring J must be pressed into the recess J.
I do not abandon or dedicate to the public any patentable features set forth herein and not hereinafter claimed, but reserve the right to claim the same either in a reissue of any patent that may be granted upon this application or in other applications for Letters Patent that I may make.
I am aware that a door-securer consisting of pronged and plain plates pivoted together have been heretofore employed, and I therefore do not claim such.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a door-securer, the combination, with the slotted pronged strip A B, the slotted plain strip 0, and the pintle D, provided with the eye E, of the bolt G, provided with the springstop J, secured in the recess J of the bolt and secured to the eye of the pintle by chain F,
. substantially as herein shown and described.
