Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. N. PETERSON, OF BOURNE, OREGON, ASSIGNOR OF ONEJIALF TO I. W. FLEEGLE, OF BOURNE, OREGON.
DOOR-SECURER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 17, 1907.
To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that I, JOHN H. N. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bourne, in the county of Baker and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Proof Door- Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved door fastener adapted for use in fastening a door from the inside so that it cannot be opened from the outside and which may be readily applied without the necessity of employing any tools whatever in securing it in place and the said invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved door fastener showing the same applied to a door and door frame and in position to fasten the door from the inside; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by line a e of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View.
My improved door fastener comprises a bar 1 and a keeper 2. The keeper is madeof thin plate or sheet metal, is here shown as of quadrangular shape, is adapted to be placed in the crack between the door frame A and the door B and is provided at its inner end with a plurality of points 3 which extend at an angle therefrom and are adapted to be embedded or forced into the door jamb to secure the keeper in place, as shown in Fig. 2. At the end of the keeper member at the sides thereof are lugs 4 which are provided with al'ining openings through which extends a rod or pintle 5. The bar 1 is also preferably made of plate metal and the same is wedge-shaped longitudinally, its outer and inner sides converging toward its outer end as shown. The said bar operates longitudinally in the space formed between the outer edge of the keeper, the lugs 4 thereof and the pintle 5 and the said outer end of the said bar is bent at right angles as at 6 and is provided with a broadened terminal portion 7 to prevent'casual disengagement of said bar from the keeper and pintle. The inner end of the said bar 1 is also broadened to form a pair of laterally-extending shoulders 8 which also prevent the said bar from becoming casually disengaged from the keeper and pintle.
It will be understood that the rod 01' pintle 5 serves to connect the bar 1 to the keeper 2 so that the said .bar may be moved longitudinally to cause it to bear both on the inner side of the door and on the face of the door frame, as shown in Fig. 1 and in full lines in Fig. 2, the bent end 6 of the said bar adapting it to be turned to a position parallel or substantially so with respect to the keeper member 2 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 to enable the door to be opened. It will be observed that as the bar is forced outwardly it acts as a wedge to force the door firmly in the rabbet in the door frame so that the said bar is caused to bear firmly against the door as well as against the door frame.
In order to prevent the bar from moving inwardly after having been placed in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, I provide the said bar with a catch 9 which is here shown as a spring secured at its outer end as at 1.0 on the bar 1 and provided near its inner end with an offset portion 11 to engage the pintle and thereby lock the bar 1 to the pintle and against casual longitudinal movement.
My improved door fastener may be used either by itself or on a door which is also provided with a lock of ordinary construction.
It will be understood that my improved door fastener cannot be operated by means of a key or by the insertion of an instrument from the outside between the door and the door frame, and hence renders the door burglar-proof and can be operated only from the inside.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explana- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is In a door securer, a keeper plate provided at one end with engaging teeth and at its other end with spaced perforated lugs forming an intermediate guide opening, a wedgeshaped locking h'ar arranged for movement in said guide opening, a pintle entered through the lugs for holding the locking bar in place, said locking bar being pro vided at one end with an angular-1y disposed portion having projecting ears, and at its other end with projections cooperating with said ears for preventing the escape of the bar-from the opening, and a spring catch carried by the bar and formed for engagement with the pintle to lock the bar against accidental longitudinal movement.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN H. N. PETERSON.
