HENRY M. SMALL, OF MELROSE, MASSACHUSETTS.
LOCK-CASING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 15, 1907.
Continuation of application filed Fovember '7, 1904, Serial No. 231,922, forfeited May 25, 1906. This application filed J nly 19, 1905. Serial No. 270,387.
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY M. SMALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Melrose, in the county of Middle-sex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lock-Casings, of which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to lock-casings of the type disclosed in my abandoned application Serial No. 231,922 and designed especially for use in connection with furniturelocks, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character into which the bolt and its operating mechanism may be conveniently introduced.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the blank from which the lock-casing is formed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, showing the locking mechanism positioned in the casing and the bolt in retracted position. view showing the bolt in locking position. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 1 4 of Fig. 3 and viewed in the direction of the arrow.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the casing, which, as seen in Fig. 1, is composed of a sheet-metal blank stamped or otherwise formed and provided with a central oblong bolt receiving opening 2, positioned centrally between a circular bearing-opening 3 and a keyhole at, said blank, which is of substantially elliptical form, having its ends at the terminals of its major axis and in line with the ends of the bolt-opening 2 flattened or truncated, as at 5, while formed in the blank are a plurality of screw-receiving open ngs or perforations 6, it being understood that after formation the blank is folded along lines parallel with its longitudinal axis and in line with the side edges of the opening 2, thus presenting spaced side portions 7 and a front edge portion 8, in which latter the opening 2 is disposed, while the openings 3 and 4 are after folding of the blank positioned in relative alinement and respectively in the side portions 7.
Fig. 3 is a similar Arranged for movement in the casing 1 and to project through the opening 2 is a member or bolt 9, engaged with one arm of an actuating-spring 10, the other arm of which is engaged, as at 1.1, with the front wall 8 of the casing, there being formed centrally in the bolt 9 an irregular or camshaped opening 12, designed to receive an operating member or tumbler 13, having a circular hub 14 journaled in the opening 3 and provided with a keyhole-opening 15 the portion 16 of which extends partially through the tumbler, as seen more clearly in Fig. 4, and is adapted to register with the portions 17 or 18 of the keyhole 4, respectively, when the bolt is retracted or projected, thus to facilitate introduction of the key (not shown) into the keyhole.
The member 13, which is preferably of the form as illustrated, is provided with a main projecting portion or cam 19 and an auxiliary portion or cam 20, the opening 12 having a portion or extension 21,. designed to receive the cam portions 19 and 20 when the bolt is in retracted position, while formed upon the bolt and projecting into the opening 12 is a cam portion or extension 22, adapted for cooperation with a cam-face 23 at the base of the cam 19 to hold the bolt in retracted position and with the outer end of said cam for fixing the bolt in projected or looking position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A lock-casing comprising a blank of substantially elliptical form having a central bolt-opening and provided with a bearing opening and a keyhole arranged respectively on opposite sides of said bolt-opening, said blank having truncated heads and being folded. on lines parallel with its major access and in line with the side edges of the central opening.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY M. SMALL.
