Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentecl June 30, 1908.
Original application filed July 19, 1905, Serial No. 270,387. Divided and this application filed December 29, 1906. Serial No. 350,096.
To alt whom it mary concem:
Be 1t known that I, HENRY M. SMALL, 'a
i citizen of the United States, residing at Melrose, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful mprovements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a division of application Serial No. 270,387, filed July 19, 1905.
This invention relates to locks, designed especially for use upon furniture, and has for its objects to provide a comparatively simple, inexpensive device of this character which may be readily installed for use, one wherein the number of parts of the bolt Operating mechanism are reduced to a minimum, one in which the bolt will be securely fixed against movement when in either of its positions, and one in which said mechanism may be conveniently introduced into the lock casing.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a central, longitudinal section through the lock casing, showing the mechanism positioned thereon and the bolt in retracted position. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the bolt in locking position. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and viewed in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4 is a detail, perspective view of the loeking bolt. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the bolt Operating member or tumbler.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the lock casing composed of sheet metal and comprising side portions or walls 2 and a front Wall 3, in whlch is formed an oblong bolt receiving o ening 4, there being formed in one of the Walls 2 a circular bearing opening 7 (lisposed in axial alinernent with a keyhole 6 formed in the other side wall.
Arranged for movementin the casing 1 and to project through the opening 2 is a locking member or bolt 7 of the form shown having an offset portion or shoulder 8 adapted to contact With the wall 3 for limiting the outward movement of the bolt and provided with an irregularly shaped tumbler receiving opening 9 designed to receive an Operating member or tumbler 10, there being formed on the bolt to project into said opening a main bearing lug 1 1 and an auxiliary bearing lug 12, both for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
The member or tumbler' 10, which is of the form shown, is provided with a laterally projecting circular hub 13 journaled in the opening 5 and provided with a keyhole opening. 14, the portion 15 of which extends partially through the tumbler, as seen more fully in Fig. 3, and is adapted to register with either of the portions 16 or 17 of the keyhole 14 respectively when the bolt is retracted or projected, thus to facilitate introduction of the key, not shown, into the keyhole, while provided on the tumbler, which is preferably of theform shown, is a main projecting portion or cam 18 and an auxiliary portion or cam 19 adapted to coperate with the bearing lug 12 for moving the bolt to retracted position, the bolt being moved to looking position through the coperation of cam portion 18 with the main bearing lug 11.
In practice, when the parts are in normal position, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and it is desired to operate the looking bolt the key is entered into the keyhole 4 with the portion 16 of which the opening 14 Will, for the time being, be in alinement. The key is then turned for throwing the tumbler 10 to the position seen in Fig. 2, thereby projecting the bolt through the opening 2, whereupon the socket 15 will register with the portions 17 of the keyhole to permit withdrawal of the key, it being apparent that under these conditions the cam portion 18 will have passed the bearing lugs 11 to thus hold the bolt against movement, while when the tumbler is turned to the position as in Fig. 1, with the bolt retracted the cam portion 19 will engage the lug 12'for fixing the bolt in retracted position. Under this construction there is produced a simple form of lock wherein the number of parts of the looking mechanism are reduced to a minimum, and one wherein the bolt will be securely fixed in either its projected or retracted positions, thus to prevent any accidental movement of the bolt.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: i
In a device of the class deseribed, the combination of a single piece casing having twospaced walls and a conneeting wall, there being a bolt-reeeiving opening in the latter Wall and a bearing opening in one of the 'first mentioned vwalls and a key opening in the other wall, a locking bolt arranged between and bearing on the said spaced walls to move back and forth in the said bolt-receiving opening and provided With an opening extendng from one side to the other and having a pair of spaced cam portions extending into the opening, a bolt Operating member of the same thckness as the bolt and rotatably mounted in the oasing Within the opening of the bolt and having a pair of outwardly eX- tending spaoed cam portions arranged to o0- operate respectively With the first-mentioned cam portions to move the bolt to and from looking position, said member constituting the sole means for moving the bolt in either direotion7 a bearing on the member eXtending into said bearing opening or rotatably mounting the member and forming the sole means for supporting the member in the casn testimony Whereof, I afix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
