To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Monms J. Lovn'rr, a citizen of the United States, vresidm at Randsburg, in the county of Kern and tate of California, have invented a new and useful Permut'ation-Padlock, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention aims to provlde a novel form of detent whereby the` shackle of a permutation padlock may be. operatively connected with the tumblers of the padlock, and to rovide novel .means for actuating the shac e to free the shacklefrom the tumblers.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds. the invention resldes in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of constructionhereinafter described and claimed, itbeing understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed cank be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 shows in elevation, one of the constituent members of the case, the locking mechanism being shown mounted therein; Fig. 2 shows the invention in elevation; Fig. 3.is a sectional detail of thetumblers together with the mechanism whereby the same are supported; Fig. 4 is an end view of the case in vwhich the locking mechanism is contained;
Fig. 5 is a perspective showing the inner end of the shank of the shacklegF ig. 6 is an elevation of one of the tumblers; and Fig. 7 is an elevation showing a portion of the inner face of one of the members which constitute the case of the lock, the view being supplemental to Fig.l 1.
In constituting a permutation padlock in accordance with the invention there is provided a case 1 preferably consisting of two like members 2 abutting along alongitudinal line 3 'and held together by securing elements 4. The openings and recesses in the interior of the case 1 liel partly in one of the members 2 and partly in the other of said ,members Therefore, but one of the members will be described in detail, the construction of the device being readily descernible from F ig.'1 of the drawings.
AEach member 2 is provided with a detent chamber 5 communicatingrwith a'transverse tumbler chamber 6 into which opens a longinated at its outer end in an enlarged recess 8. The detent chamber 5 at one end communicates with a shackle recess 9 which is parallel tothe groove 7, the inner end of the shacklerecess 9 being denoted by the numeral 10. The shackle is denoted generally by the numeral 14 and includes a shank 15 mounted in the shackle recess 9 for rotation and for longitudinal sliding movement, the shank 15 of the shackle being provided at its inner end with a laterally projectingpin 16 adapted to move longitudinally, in the slot l1a of the shackle recess, and to engage behind the shoulder 11 when the shackle is rotated.A The terminal finger 19` of the shackle 14 is vadapted to be received in the seat 12 when the shackle 14 is slid longitudinally.
Located in the detent chamber 5 is an angular detent 20, comprising a primary arm 21 adapted to engage between shoulders 18 formed by reducing the diameter of a portion of the shank 15 of the shackle, as indicated at 17. Disposed at an angle to the primary arm 21 of the detent is a secondary is exarm 22, the detent 2O being fulcrumed at it-s angle upon a pin 23 supported by one or both of the members 2 of the cas 1.
An actuating spring for the detent 20l and for the shackle 14 is provided, this actuat# ing spring preferably taking the form of a flat plate 24, one end of which is curved as denoted at 25 to bear against one edge of the primary arm 21 of the detent, the opposite edge of the spring 24 terminating ina wedge-shaped head 26 adapted to be received in a similarly shaped recess in the case 1.
Under circumstances which will be set forth hereinafter, the secondary arm 22 of the angular detent 20 is adapted to be received within notches 27 formed in the peripheries of the tumblers 28, 29 and 30.
The tumbler 30 is fixed upon the tumbler shaft 36 which is journaled for rotation in the bearing groove 7, the tumbler shaft 36 being threaded to receive nuts 31 between which thetumbler 30 is bound. The tumbler 29 surrounds and rotates freely upon a collar 33 provided with a flange 32 which bler 29 and the tumbler 28 is a washer 34,-
the tumbler 28 being held upon the collar means of a .pin 35, or in any other suita le manner. Mounted upon the tumof, is a nut 37 supporting a dial 38 held in place by means of a terminal, exposed knob 39. The dial 38 is adapted to coperate` with a dial 40 formed upon the outer end face of the'lock case 1. A pin 41 projects from the tumbler 30 and is adapted to engage'the pin 42 projecting from the tumbler 29, another pin 43 upon the tumbler 29 being adapted to engage the pin 44 which projects from the tumbler 28.
The general operation of a permutation padlock is well understood in the art, and it will be seen that when the operator is cognizant of the proper combination, this combination may be set up upon the dials 38 and 40, the tumbler shaft 36 being rotated to accomplish this result. When the tumbler shaft 36 is rotated, the tumbler 30 which is secured to the shaft for rotation therewith, will be rotated, the pin 41 engaging the pin 42 upon the tumbler 29, and the pin 43 upon the tumbler 29 engaging the pin 44 upon the tumbler 28 to aline the notch 27 in the tumbler 28 with the arm 22 of the detent, successive reverses in the direction of rotation of the tumbler shaft serving to aline the notches 27 in the several tumblers. In Fig. 1, the notches 27 in the several tumblers 28, 29 and30 are alined, the secondary arm 22 of the angular detent 20 registering in the alined notches. The pin 16 which is carried by the shank 15 of the shackle 14is engaged behind the shoulder 11, the shackle 14 being upheld, and the spring 24 being under tension. The shackle 14 may be rotated until the pin 16 no longer registers behind the shoulder 11, whereupon the shackle 14 may be slid longitudinally, and be swung laterally, permitting the finger 19 to enter the seat 12. So soon as the pin 16 is disengaged from the shoulder 11, the spring 24 will act against the arm 21 of the detent, causing the arm 21 of the detent to move the shackle 14 longitudinally, and to vcause the finger 19 to engage in the seat 12. At the same time, the secondary arm 22 of theV detent will be swung laterally, out of engagement with the notches 27 in the tumblers 28, 29 and 30. By means of the knob 39, the tumbler shaft -36 may be given a turn or two untilall of the notches 27, or some of them, are out of alinement. Under such circumstances,the inner edge of the secondary arm 22 of the angular detent will rest against the periphery of one, or more of the tumblers 28, 29 and 30, and the shackle 14 will be held against longitudinal movement, the finger v.19 being held engaged in the seat 12. bler shaft 36, adjacent the outer end there- As will be understood readily, the combi-I nation may be changed by shifting the nuts 31 which bind the tumbler 30, so that the tumbler 30 may be rotated to assume a new A position with respect to thel tumbler shaft 36. Likewise, the combination may be changed by shifting the nut 37, sothatthe dial 38 may be rotated to a new position.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is1- 1. In a permu'tationpadlock, a case; a
tumbler journaled inthe case and provided 'with an opening; a shackle having one of its arms permanently mounted in the case for sliding movement at right angles to the plane of rotation of the tumbler and for vrotation in a common direction with the tuinbler; and a detent ulcrumed intermediate `its ends in the case, said arm of the shackle having spaced, circumscribing shoulders between which one end of the detent is received to permit a rotation of the shackle, the other end of the detent being receivable in the opening and .being engageable by the tumbler, to maintain the irst speciiied end of the detent engaged between the shoulders to limit the sliding movement of the shackle and to prevent a vcomplete withdrawal ot said arm of the shackle from the case.
2. In a permutation padlock, a case; a tumbler journaled for rotation therein and provided with an opening; a shackle slid- 'able in the case and provided with a shoulder; a detent fulcrumed intermediate its end's upon the oase, one end ofthe detent being adapted to bear upon the periphery of the tumbler andto enter the opening, the other end of the detent being engaged with the shoulder; and a spring bearingupon the detent, upon one side of its fulcrum, the spring constituting a means for sliding the shackle and a means for withdrawing one end of the detent from the opening in the tumbler.
