Be it known that I, Fnno L. EATON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rew, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation-Padlocks,
of which the following is a specification, refwill be securely held in its locked position and all elforts to open the same by persons unfamiliar with the combination frustrated.
It is another and more particular object.
of my invention to provide a lock casing, a tube extending therethrough to receive one arm of the shackle, a guide tube extending into the casing for the other arm of the shackle, a series of permutation locking disks engaged through one side of said tube and coacting withthe first shackle arm, and an additional locking disk to want with both arms of the shackle.
It is also a further general objectof the invention to provide simple and effective means for supporting the shackle in its open position and eifectually preventing the complete withdrawal of the shackle from the lock casing.
And it is a further general object of my invention to provide a permutationpadlock which is relatively simple, as well as strong and durable in its construction, highly efficient and reliable in its operation and capable of manufacture at relatively small cost.
With the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists in the improved construction, combinatlon and relative arrange ment of the several parts as w1ll be herelnafter more fully described, subsequently claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein j Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view illustrating one embodiment of my improved permutation padlock;

Referring in detail to the drawings, 5 designates the bodyw all of the casing, which is of cylindricalform. This casing is closed at one of its ends by the plate 6 and a cap plate 7 is adapted to be fitted upon the other end ofisaidcasing. A tube 8 is threaded at one of-its ends in the capplate 7 and at its opposite end in the plate 6. A relatively short tube 9 is threaded in the plate 7 at a diametrically opposite point and projects into the casing. Theplate 7 is securely held against removal by means of the screws 10 and ll respeotively. After the screws have been adjusted into engagement with the pe riphery of the plate 7 the heads of said screws are cut oil' so as to prevent their removal. A rod 12 is rotatably mounted at one of its ends inthecap plate 7 and upon said rod a locking disk 13 is fixed, said disk being provided with notches or recesses in its periphery at diametrically opposite points, as at 14;. A series of telescopically engaged tubes 15 are mounted upon the rod 12for independent rotation, said tubes pro- 15 is rotatably mounted in the end Wall 6 of the case. A locking disk 16 is keyed upon theinner end of each tube 15, said disk be ing preferably formed with a plurality of keyways 17 so that it may be adjusted upon the tube 15. Each of these disks has a single-notch or recess 18 in its periphery. Ekteriorly of the lock casing, the tubes 15 project beyond each other and the rod 12 extends beyond the end of the inner tube. To this rod and to the outer end of each tube, a graduated plate 19 is secured. The surface of the end wall. 6 of thecase is also suitably graduated,and the plates 19 are formedwith index projections 20 for move ment over the graduated surfaces.

longer arm is slidably and rotatably en shackle having a long gaged Within the tuloe 8 and is formed with a notch 24 coinciding with a slot or opening 25 in the inner side of the tube 8, said notch being adapted to receive the edge of the locking disk 13. The longer arm 22 is also formed with additional spaced notches 26 to coincide with the spaced slots or openings 27 in the tube 8, said latter notches in the shackle receiving the locking disks 16. The
shorter arm 23 of the shackle is also provided in its end and at one side thereof with a notch or recess 28 to receive the edge of the locking disk13.
In the end of the longer arm 22 of the shackle, a pin or stud 29 is fixed and is adapted for movement in a longitudinal slot 30 formed in thewall of the tube 8. This slot at its upper end 5 is angularly' or horizontally extended, as at 31;
In the operation'of the device, as above described, and assuming thatthe shackle is securely locked in its: closed position, as seen in Fig. 1, when it is desired to open the lock, the plates 19 are turned with-respect to each other and in proper predetermined positions as required by the particu lar combination so asto rotate the several disks 16 relative to each other and dispose the notches 18 thereof in registering relation with the respective notches 26 in the shackle arm. The locking disk 13 is also rotated in a similar manner to position the notches in the edge thereof in coinciding relation with the notches-24 and 28 in the respective shackle arms. The shackle may then be drawn outwardly to dispose the end of its shorter arm 23 beyond the plate 7' of the lock casing, such movement being limited by the engagement-ofthe pin29 on the long arm of the shackle with the end wall of the slot 30. This shackle arm is thenr0- tated, the pin 29 movinginthe angularend 31 of said slot so that the shorter'arm of the shackle will be swung laterally. Thus,
the shackle may then be readily removed from the staple in which'it is engaged. The
shackle may be again locked in its closed position by reversing the above operation andforcingthe long arm of the shackle inwardly into the tube 8, and turning the several locking disks to engage the same in the notches in the shackle arms. By mount ing and arranging the several parts of the lock in the mannerdescribed anddisposing the disk 13 throughthe wall of the tube 8 and in engagement with both arms of the shackle, a very strong and durable construction is produced and'bendingor springing of the central rod 12 will be obviated- The combination may be changed when desired by adjustingthe several disks 16 on the ends of the respective tubes 15, as will be readily understood.-
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying draw ings, the construction, manner of operation and several advantages of the device will be clearly and fully understood. The improved lock consists of relatively few parts which are all of simple form so that the device will not be liable to get out of order and can be manufactured at relatively small cost. It will be understood that the lock may be made in various sizes and applied to many different uses for which such a lock would be desirable.
While I have herein shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the several parts of my invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that the device is susceptible of considerable modification therein and I, accordingly, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim 1. In combination, a casing, a tube eX- tending longitudinally therethrough,- a shackle having relatively long and short arms and the longer arm being rotatably and longitudinally movable in said tube, said tube being provided with a series of spaced openings and the longer shackle arm having spaced notches to register therewith, said tube being also provided with a slot disposed longitudinally thereof, an outstanding member carried by the longer shackle arm and extending within said slot, a series of permutation locking disks disposed through said openings and engaged in the notches and each having a notch in its periphery to register with the notch in the shackle arm when the disk is rotated to a predetermined position, the longer arm of the shackle having an additional notch therein, the short arm of the shackle being adapted to extend into one end of the easing and also having a notch therein, and an additional rotatable locking disk having notches in its periphery at diametrically opposite points and adapted for engagement in the latter notches in the shackle arms.
