To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VVAU DELL REYnoLDs, a citizen of the United States, residlng at Greeni' ille, in the county of Greenville, State ofSouth Carolina, have invented cer embodying the present invention.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, there is provided a flat casing 5 of the general type used in look construction and having bolt apertures 6 in the end portionsofone of its side edge walls. Slidably mounted in the casing to project through one of these openings is a latch bolt 7 resiliently urged by the spring 8 to project in locking position, and having a recess 9 receiving an arm 10 on a knob shaft 11 whereby it may be retracted, the bolt and knob shaft being preferably disposed in the lower portion of the casing.
A locking bolt 12 is slidably mounted in the upper portions of the casing to pro ject through the upper bolt aperture, the mounting for said bolt preferably comprising spaced transverse plates 13 and 14: secured to the side wall of the casing, and on Which the bolt rests. For moving the bolt to extended and retracted positions, a shaft 15 1s transversely journaled in the casing below the forward end of the bolt and carries an upstanding arm 16 engaged in a notch 17 in the bottom of the bolt to provide a rocking connection. The face side of the casing is slotted at 17, and the adjacent end of the shaft 15 is recessed at 18 for the reception of the head of a removable key 19, shown in Fig. 8, to effect bolt shifting rotation of the shaft.
' The permutation mechanism for controlling the operating of thebolt under influence of this key actuated shaft comprises a pair of tumbler disks 20 and 21 having laterally projected hub sleeves22 and 23 at corresponding sides, the sleeve 23 of the disk 21 being of materially greater diameter than sleeve 22. j The sleeve hub 22 is mounted on a bearing sleeve 24: and carried by projecting inwardly from one side wall of they casing. Loosely engaged about the sleeve hub 22 is a bearing sleeve 25 for the sleeve hub 23, this bearing. sleeve 25 being carried by a plate 26 which extends between the permutation disks-and is secured to the posite side casing wall. Thus the permutation disks are mounted for independent rotation and held in assembled position. It is noted that the free edge of each of the disk hubs extends inwardly of its bearing sleeve, and said inwardly extended portion of each hub is provided with a notch 28 engageable by a key inserted in the casing for turning the disk. As shown more particularly in Fig. 7, the key for the hub 22 comprises a shank 29 having a notch engaging wing 30 adjacent its work end, and a key for the hub 23 comprises a shank 31 having a wing 32 adjacent its work end and spaced inwardly a distance greater than the distance of the Wing 30 from the end of its shaft, this wing 32 being also of greater length than the wing 30. Both keys are inserted through a keyhole 33 in the casing wall adjacent the retaining sleeve 27, and to prevent possible insertion of an improvised actuating member through the keyhole to turn the tumbler disks, a transverse partition 34 is provided in the sleeve 27 having a keyhole 35 extending in a direction opposite to the keyhole 33, and with its shank receiving portion in alinement with the shank receiving portion of the keyhole 33. Thus, to turn the disks, each of the keys 29 and 31 is inserted through the keyhole 33, turned and inserted through the keyhole 35, and then engaged with the notch of its corresponding disk hub.
Each of the permutation disks is provided in its periphery with a series of spaced notches 36 of slight depth, and with a single radial notch 37 of a depth substantially equal to the distance which the locking bolt 12 moves from extended to retracted positions. Extended inwardly from the bolt 12 is an arm 38 which carries at its free ends a lateral finger 39 adapted to engage in the notches 38 when in alinement therewith and with each other to permit a retractile movement of the bolt, and adapted to abut the peripheries of the disks in other relative positions of their notches 38 to prevent retractile movements of the bolt.
To determine the position of each of the tumbler disks upon engagement of its cor responding key in thenotch of its hub, each key has fixed thereon a disk 41 havlng an annular series of symbols 42 on its periphery coacting with a pointer 43 on the casing wall when the key is inserted in the casing. It will however be understood that the indicating means may be of conventional nature comprising a symbol disk on the casing and a pointer on the key, such conventional arrangement being obvious and hence not specifically illustrated.
An exceedingly simple, and durable and readily assembled permutation lock has thus been provided, which affords a high degree of protection against unauthorized actuation, by reason of the plurality of key members employed in conjunction therewith and by reason of the means preventing actuation of the tumbler disks by an improvised tool. The notches 36 prevent the detection of the combination by noting the click usually present in locks of this nature and caused, by registry of the tumbler notch with its engaging member, since said notches produce the same effect on the tumbler engagement member as do the receiving notches 37, except when sueh notches 37 are in alinement therewith.
The present lock may be associated with doors, and if desired, mortised thereinto in the manner of ordinary key and knob actuated locks. V
WVhat is claimed is:
1. A combination lock comprising a bolt, a plurality of superimposed disks adjustable with respect to each other, said bolt and disks having cooperating means for permitting releasing movement of the bolt in predetermined positions of the disks and bolt, the disks having hubs disposed one within the other and projecting one beyond the end of the other, said ends being notched, the notch of the projecting hub terminating short of the end of the other hub, and a casing inclosing the bolt and disks and paying a key-hole leading to the notched iu s.

3. A combination lock comprising a oasing, a diskmounted in the casing and having a hub projecting from one face and provided with a terminal notch, a bearing carried by the casing and in which the hub is rotatable, a second disk encircling said bearing and hub and having a hub'projecting beyond the end of the first named hub and provided with an end notch terminating short of the first named hub, a sleeve carried by the casing and encircling the hub of the second disk, a casing within the inclosure of the sleeve having a key-hole, and a partition in the sleeve parallel with the disks and having therethrough a key-hole out of registration with the first named key-hole.
