PERMUTATION-PADLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1, 1917..
Application filed February 18, 1914. Serial No. 819,314.
1 b all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE IV. BoNNnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phoenix, in the county of Yazoo and State of hflississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation- Padlocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to permutation padlocks, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide av padlock of simple construction in which the shackle is held within the lock casing by means of a series of rotating tumblers anda plurality of non-rotatable washers retaining the tumblers in spaced relation.
Another object of the invention is to sims plify the construction of permutation padlocks, and to provide means whereby the combination of the tumblers may be rendered more difficult to find.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a padlock made in accordance with this invention and shown in side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same made on a larger scale,
Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on line 33 of Fig. 2,
Fig. at is a sectional view taken on the line H of Fig. 2,
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 6 is a similar section taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the washers,
Fig. 8 is a similar view of one of the tumblers removed.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the padlock casing, said lock the the
th e
casing being provided with a central recess holding the different parts plain peripheries and are mounted to rotate on the long center leg 5 of the shackle in the recesses between the bits 6, while the washers 4 are each provided with a projection 7 which engages a notch 8 in the casing 1. The casing 1 is provided with a recess upon opposite sides exposing diametrically opposed portions of the tumblers 3 and washers a to permit of the adjustment of the tumblers, as shown at 8 Each of the tumblers and washers is provided with a slot to accommodate the bits 6 on the long leg 5 of the shackle as shown at 9. The shackle 2 is provided with oppositely directed short legs A suitably curved to dispose the reduced extremities 10 thereof in position to be received within the recesses formed in the casing on opposite sides of the central recess which receives the long leg 5. A cover plate 11 is connected to the lower end of the casing permanently.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the letters or characters on the tumblers 3 must be moved into proper position relative to the letters or characters on the Washers 4 so that the slots 9 will be in alinement with the bits 6 in order to permit the shackle to be removed.
What is claimed is In a permutation padlock, the combination with a casing having a central recess therein opening into the outer faces of the casing and into the opposite ends of the casing, the upper end of the opening bein restricted, a plurality of rotatable tum lers mounted in said recess, non-rotatable washers interposed between said tumblers, said tumblers and said washers being inserted in said recess at the lower end of said casing, a cover secured to the lower end of said casing for covering said recess and in operative position.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signa ture in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. BONNEY.
Witnesses:
A. S. HENRY, L. V. HAMBERLIN.
