BENJAMIN sNYDEnfoF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Application led April 14, 1916. Serial No. 91,051.
To alliuiltom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN SNYDER,
'4 a citizen of the United States, and a resident ofthe city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Permutation-Padlock, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved permutation padlock which is very simple and durable in construction, cheap to manufacture and arranged to provide a -double safeguard against opening thel padlock by unauthorized'persons.
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a frameprovided with spaced slotted sleeves, a shackle provided on its legs with lugs and adapted to be passed intoA the sleeveswith the lugs lprojecting through ed' to rotate' on'each sleeve one above the other-andeach having twoconcentric bores I vof which the larger bore is engaged by the projecting end of the corresponding lug and the smaller bore 'is provided in its wall with afgroove adapted to register with the lugs and thevslot in the corresponding sleeve.
v A practical embodiment of the invention 30.
is represented in the accompanying drawings formlng a part of this specification, 1n which similar characters of reference 1nd1- cate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the permutation padlock; Fig; 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig..
3; Fig. 3 is a cross section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line4-4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the sleeves; Fig. 6 is a similar view of one of the tumblers; Fig. 7 is a plan view of the top plate of the frame; and Fig. 8 is a similar view of the blank for forming the base and the sidesof the frame.
The base 10 of the lock frame is provided with integral posts 11 fastened at their upper ends by openings 12 formed in a top plate 13, thus holding the latter spaced from the base 10 and parallel thereto. .In the base 10 and the top plate 13 are secured `sleeves 14 and 15, each provided at the lower and upper end with attaching members 16 and 17, of which the members 16 engage openings 18 in the base 10, and the members 17 engage openings 19 in the top -the sleeves 14 and 15 and the said legs 26 and 27V are provided with spaced lugs 28 and 29 disposed in opposite directions, of
which the lugs 28 project through the sleeve slot 20 and the lugs 29 project'through the sleeve slot 21. On each of the sleeves 14 Patented Aug. 22, 1916.
as plainly indicated in Iand 15 are mounted to turn tumblers 30,
preferably two in number, and located one above the other. preferably made polygonal at its peripheral face and each side of the polygon is provided vwith an indicating character such as a letter of the alphabet, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6. Each of the tumblers 30 is provided with two concentric bores 31 and'32, of which the smaller bore 31 fits the corresponding sleeve 14 or 15, and the wall of this bore 31 is provided with a lengthwise extending groove 33 for the passage of the lug or lugs 28 of the corresponding shackle leg 26 or 27. The larger bore 32 of each tumbler accommodates the corresponding lug 28 of the shackle leg 26 or 27, so that the tumblers are free to revolve on the sleeves 14 and 15.
In practice the tumblers 30 on one sleeve have different indicating characters. The
top plate 13 is provided with keyholes 40, 41 for the passage of the shackle legs 26, 27
and their lugs 28, 29. When the padlock is in closed position then some or all of the tumblers 30 are in set position, their slots 33 being out of register with the lugs 28 and 29, and consequently the shackle 25 cannot be withdrawn as the lugs 28 and 29 abut against the shoulders 34 formed between the bores 31 and 32, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 3 and 4. When it is desired to open the padlock the person knowing the combination turns the tumblers until the corresponding indicating characters appear on the front of the padlock, and when the tumblers are in this position all the slots 33 of the several tumblers are in register with the lugs 28'and 29 to allow removal of the shackle 25 from Athe sleeves 14 and'15 and the tumblers 30.
By providing the legs of the shackle with lugs disposed in opposite directions, it is Each of the tumblersy is evident that a very safe construction is provided and it is not easy for an unauthorized person to find the combination by rotating the tumblers. By providing locking means for both legs of the shackle a large number of tumblers can be provided in a comparatiiely small space, thus insuring the desired sa et l Halving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A permutation padlock, comprising a frame having a base' provided at its ends with posts, a top plate attached at its ends to the posts, spaced slotted sleeves arranged between the said posts and having members at their ends attached to the said base and top plate, a shackle provided on its legs with lugs and adapted to be pressed into the sleeves with the lugs projecting through the slots in the sleeves, and tumblers mounted to rotate on each sleeve and each having -two concentric Vbores of which the larger one is engaged by the projecting ends of the lugs and the smaller one is provided in its wall with a groove adapted to register with the lugs and the slot in the corresponding sleeve..
2. A permutation lock, comprising 'a frame having a base provided at its ends with integral posts and a top plate attached at its ends to the ends of the posts, sleeves j arranged between the said postsl and having sleeve intermediate the said frame base and the said top plate, each tumbler having two concentric bores of which the larger one accommodates the said lugs and the smaller one is provided in its Wall with a' groove adapted to register with the lugs of the corresponding shackle leg and the slot of the corresponding sleeve. n
3. A permutation padlock, comprising a frame having a base provided at its ends with integral posts, a top plate having reduced ends provided with openings for attachment to the ends of said posts, the said top p late having a keyhole provided with oppositely arranged recesses in its walls, a slotted sleeve arranged in the framebetween the posts and having oppositely arranged attaching members at its ends, the attaching members at one end engaging spaced openings in the said base and at the other end engaging the said recesses in the walls of the keyhole in. the top plate, a shackle having a leg provided with a lug, the leg being adapted to engage the sleeve with the lug projecting through the slot in the sleeve, and a tumbler mounted to turn on the said sleeve and having two concentric bores of which the larger one embraces the projecting end of the lug and the smaller one lits the sleeve and has its wall providedqwith a lengthwise extending groove, for the passage of the projecting end of the'lug.
