Application filed July 1,
following to be a full, clear, and exactde scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled'in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I This invention relates to new and use,- ful improvements in looks and more particularly to permutation padlocks, the primary object of .the invention being to pro vide a device of this character whichcannot be picked thereby providing substantially a burglar-proof lock.
A further object of the invention resldes in providing a lock consisting of few and simple parts which maybe quickly and readily assembled or disassembled for the purpose of changing combinations.
A still further object resides in providing a device which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture, and one which'will be extremely eliicient in use. I 1
With these and other objects in view, my invention consistsv inthe novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to, and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application,
Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention,
Figure 2 is a view thereof principally in vertical section,
Figure 3 is a transverse section through the same,
Figure 4 is an elevation of the shackle removed, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the tumblers removed.
In describing the invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which 1 designates a shell or casing for my improved lock, said shell or casing con sisting ofa bottom plate 2, vertical side walls 3, the latter being preferably formed integral with the late 2, and a top plate 4 which is separab e from the side walls 3,
to which the same is secured. The bottom plate 2 is provided with a pair of openings 1920. Serial No. 393,324.
5 and the top plate- 1 is similarly provided,
with openings 6 in alinement with the openings 5. Mounted in these openings 5 of the bottom plate and riveted or otherwise similarly secured therein are the tubular stems or barrel members 7. These barrel members 7 are provided with loi'igitudinal' slots or key-ways Spend the upper ends of said barrel members are engaged within the openings 6 of the top plate at. These open ings 6 are provided with lateral slots or key-ways9 and the barrel members 7 are so arranged between the top and bottom plates2 and. 4 that the key-ways or slots 8 register with thekey-ways or slots 9.
It is not necessary. that the top plate 4 v be secured permanently to the side walls or any other; portion of the shell or casing 1' but if desired, it may be so connected. It is preferable, however, that said top plate be removably engaged with the side walls of this shell or casing so that the device may be readily disassembled. In this vrnanshell or casing are a plurality of hexagonal tumblers 9. In the drawings, I have shown four-such tumblers on each barrel member, but it will be understood that any number of tumblers may be provided, as desired. On each face of the hexagonal tumblers 9 is inscribed a number and also inscribed thereon is a mark or indentation designated in the drawing as 10. These indentations 10 just mentioned are adapted to register in vertical alinement with an indentation 11 on each side of the. top plate, 4, as will be described in detail herebelow in connection with the operation of the lock.
Each of the tumblers with the exception of the lower faces of the lowermost of each series on the barrels 7 is provided also with a slot or key-way 12 communicating with the central opening thereof as is clearly illustrated, in Figure 5 of the drawings. These slots or key-ways 12 are adapted to register with the slots or key-ways 8 of the barrels 7 when the lock is to be opened as will be, hereinafter described.

This being permutation look, there is a g iartlcular position of each tumbler predetermined in order to open the device, and each tumbler is therefore rotated on each of the barrels until the predetermined number has been indicated.- This indication is represents by the number facing outwardly from the loci: body so that the indentation on the face of the tumbler corresponding with that number registers with and alines- With the indent ion 11 on the top plated of the body or" the lock. lVhen all tumblers have been rotated to the desired rained positions for opening the lock, it is only necessary to Withdraw the shackle 13 with hard pull from the body. It will be understood that by the turning of the turnblers 9' to a predetermined position that the and predetel i: I claim new is Jr permutation lock having a casing provided with a bottom Wall and side Wal teeral "with the bottom wall and bein uno 7 noted at the ends, said bottom Wall projecting outwardly beyond the side Walls, tubes mounted on s-aic bottom Wit-ll said tubes having: slots disposed longitudinally thereof. tuinblers to substantially close said ends end to project beyond. said side Walls for unrestrictmil manipulation, said tuinblers bejournaled on the tubes, each tumbler 'ing an upper and a lower wall integral in h each other and an intervening recess, said upner and lower walls havingslots to register ith the slots ot'the tubes a closure bar extending outwardly beyond said side walls'and into which the tubes extend, said bar having slots'to register with those of the tubes, and ashaclrle having bits to pass through the various slots to engage the recesses 'for protective tYZliltF- diate said upper and lower walls.
In testimony whereof 1 21th:; my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
