COMBINATION-,PADLOCK.
Application filed September 15, 1916. se ial No.
T 0 all whom'z't may concern Be it. known that I, JoHN R. Sonrnns,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlestown, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have inventedcertain useful Improvements in Combination- Padloeks, of which the following is av specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in combination padlocks, one object of the invention being the provision of a lock of this type in which the tumbler carrying member is provided with a limiting flange at one end and is securely fastened to one of the shackle members of the look, so that the tumblers are held firmly in position for proper cooperation with the tumbler engaging member which in turn is carried by the cooperating shackle member.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a lock of this type which is simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, and thoroughly efiicient and practical in use.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a transverse section of my invention, and
Fig. 2 a longitudinal central section of the invention, partly in elevation.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates one shackle member and 11 the other cooperative shackle member.
The member 10 is formed with a socket 19. in the inner end of which is adapted to be secured the reduced end 13 of the fixed barrel ll having the annular flange 15 at the opposite end thereof.
This barrel is further provided with the longitudinal slot 16, while mounted upon the barrel intermediate of the member 10 and the annular shoulder, are a plurality of tumbler rings 17, each one of which is provided with an internal flange 18 having a slot 19 therein for alinement with the slot of the barrel.
The shackle member 11 is provided with bar 20 adapted to be inserted within the longitudinal slot of the barrel andprovided with a plurality of notches 11 upon one edge thereof, said notches being adapted to aline with the respective flanges of the tumblers so that when the shackle members are in the posi tion as shown in Fig. 2, the flanges of the respective tumblers will aline with such notches so that the rotation of the tumblers Specification of Letters Patent.
, Patented oat. so, 1917.
will place the flanges in such notches and thus lock theshackle members from longitudinal separation.
I In order to permit of only a limited relative movement of the shackle members and to normally hold them in a closed position I have provided an extension 22 integral with the outer end of the bar 20 and have arranged it through an opening 23 in the barrel H. A knob 25 is mounted on the projecting end of the extension and is adapted for sliding movement in the socket 12 and for engagement with the barrel for limiting relative movement of the parts. Suitable resilient means such as acoil spring 26 has the respective ends connected to the knob and to the barrel and serves as a means for automatically moving the shackle members into close relation with each other subsequent to the arrangement of the bar 20 in the proper position after the shackle members have been released.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in detail of construction, pro-. portion and arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
What I claim as new is l. A padlock of the character described including a pair of cooperative shackle members, a bar rigidly connected to one of the shackle members, an extension projecting from one end of the bar, a barrel rigidly connected to the other shackle member and having a slot for receiving the bar and having an opening for receiving the extension, cooperative locking means on the bar and barrel, a knob on the outer projecting end of the extension and engageable at times with the barrel for limiting relative movement of the shackle members, and resilient means disposed about the extension and connected to the knob and to the barrel for normally holding the shackle members in a closed position.
'2. A padlock including a pair of cooperative shackle members, a socket on one of the shackle members, a barrel rigidly connected to one end of the socket and provided with a slot and with an opening in the inner end establishing connnunication between the slot and the socket, a flange on the outer end of the barrel, a plurality of tumbler rings rotatably mounted on the barrel and provided with slotted flanges for registering with the slot in the barrel, a bar connected to the other shackle member and insertible in the slot in the barrel when the slots in the flanges and the rings are registered with the slot inthe barrel, the bar being provided with a plurality of notches engage-able by the flanges on the rings when the rings are rotated to lock the parts in a closed position, an extension projecting from the outer end of the bar and projeeting through the opening in the barrel and into the socket, a knob carried by the outer projecting end of the extension and engageable at times with the barrel for limiting relative movement of the shackle members, and a coil spring disposed about the extension and connected to the knob and to the barrel for normally holding the shackle members in a closed position.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
' JOHN R. SOMERS.
