GEORGE PETERSEN, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
KEYHOLE-CLOSER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed 1|:"ebruary 2, 1912.
Patented May 13, 1913.
Serial No. 674,889.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE PETERSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of WVashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Keyhole- Close-rs, of which the following is a specifioation.
The object of this invention, primarily, is to provide a safety closer for the key hole of a door lock in order to prevent the insertion of a key in said look by any person desiring to open the same.
Another essential feature of the invention is the provision of a locking plate within a housing said plate being adapted to lock a key in said housing in order that the same can neither be withdrawn nor turned for the purpose of unlocking the lock and thereby also preventing insertion of another key therein.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood of course, that the essential features thereof are susceptibleto changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment being shown ,in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary end elevation of a door, showing the invention applied thereto, the same being partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the housing partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the housing, the locking plate being removed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the locking plate.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that the invention is suitably attached to the side of a door 5 adjacent the lock therefor and comprises a substantially rectangular shaped housing 6, the upper end of said housing being adapted to engage the ordinary well known form of door knob. The front and rear walls 7 and 8 respectively of the housing are provided with alined key hole apertures 8 for the insertion of a key therethrough for the purpose of unlocking the door. Slidably mounted in the bearing guides 9 and 10 which extend transversely of the rear wall 8 of the housing in spaced parallel relation, is a locking plate 11, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described. The locking plate 11 is provided upon one of its longitudinal edges.
with a substantially arcuate contracted portion as indicated by 12, in order that a key may be readily inserted in the look through the key hole 8' when the locking plate 11 is in an unlocking position. In order that a key may be locked in the housing after its insertion therein, the plate 11 is provided contiguous to the upper end of said arcuateportion 12 with a transversely extending slot 13 which is adapted to engage the shank of a key after the same has been given a quarter turn and the plate moved toward the opposite side of the housing.
For the purpose of moving the plate 11 transversely of the housing in order to close the key hole aperture 8 or look a key in said housing, a knob having a shank 15 is rotatably mounted in suitable apertures 16 adjacent the lower guide 10. A roll-back 17 is fixed upon the shank 15' and said rollback is adapted to engage the side walls of a segmental aperture 18 in the plate 11 so it is evident that the roll-back 17 will engage the side walls of the aperture 18 and cause the plate to he slid back and forth in the guides 9 and 10 upon the rotation of knob 14.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing description that the invention provides a simple and eflicient means for preventing the insertion of a key in the lock of a door and also means whereby a key may be locked in the housing after its insertion therein.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is A kev hole closer including a housing to be secured to the door and formed with key hole openings to aline with the key hole opening of the door, the rear wall of the housing being cut to form spaced lips adapted to be bent inwardly into position and transversely of the housing, a locking plate supported on and guided between said lips, said plate being formed in one side edge intermediate its ends with an inwardly extending recess to uncover the key hole open ings of the housing when the plate is in one In testimony whereof I afiix my signaposition, said plate being further formed ture in presence of two Witnesses.
with a key receiving slot to receive a key T shank to lock the key against operation GEORGE PETERSEA' when the plate has been moved to OPBlatiX'B Witnesses:
position, and means operative from beyond EMMA MCKINNEY,
the housing to actuate the locking plate. EDNA V. WVA'rsoN.
