LOCK.
'To all 'whom it may concern i Be it `known that l, noone Moulant, a3
`citizen of the United `tiltates, residing atjj Rathbun, .in the county of' .tnppzanoose and; State of iowa, have invented certain newf and useful `Impi-'oveinents in Locks, oi which j the 'following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to doordeclts "having a plurality of tumblers which Aare en-` gageable with a sliding bolt7 and its object? is to provide a novel arrangement of tuin-` blers to `be .hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention also has for its olijf-let `to .i provide a lock which is devoid of complicated parts liable to get out of order, and also to provide a loclr which is strong and durable, and which can be cheaply manufactored.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an inside face view of' the lock. F ig. 9 is an edge view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawing the lock casing is a fiat block 5 rectangula1.l in shape, or otherwise shaped. rlhe block is adapted to be mounted on the door and secured thereto by screws or other suitable fastenings 6, the top and bottom portions of the block having perforations for this purpose.
The inner face of the block has a series of vertical slots or ways 7 in each of which is slidably mounted a tumbler, the latter comprising a flat bar 8 of a depth and `.vidth to lit in the slot. The tumbler is reduced in width at its lower end, leaving a shoulder 9 and a depending finger 10, the back edge of which latter, at its outer end has a recess 11 which forms a shoulder 12. A djacent to the lower ends of the slots 7 are shoulders 12 which are engageable by the shoulders 12. l
ln that face of the block 5 having the slots 7 is a transverse passage 13 which intersects the lower ends of said slots. rlhe depth of this passage is less than the depth of the slots. 1n the passage 13 is mounted a sliding bolt 14 having' in its top edge a number of notches 15 corresponding` to the number of tumblers 8. lfhen the notches 15 are in alinement with the slots 7, the tumblcrs 8 drop into the notches. The shouldered portions of the tumbler-s enter the notches, the reduced portions or fingers 10 lying behind Specification of Letters atent.
Application diled September 13, 1913.
Patented 1100-9, 1913. Serial No. (789,664.
the bolt in those portions ofthe slots which are back of thc passage.
'lhe bottom wall of the passage 13 is im- `dercut as indicated at lo, toi-nung a `keyhole `which crosses the lower ends `of the slots it. rLillie bottom wall also has a .longi-- tudinal recess 17 into which ext-ends a lug `or stud 153 carried by the bottom edge of the bolt 14:, to limit the travel of the latter `and prevent its entire withdrawal from athe passage 13.
rlhe ltey `for operating the tumblers t3 comprises a stem 19 having a number of bits 20 corresponding to the number of tumblers and spaced apart a distance corresponding to the spacing of' the tumbler-s.
The rear end of the bolt 111 projects a sutficient distance from the housing 5 so that it may be advanced or retracted by hand.
The tumblers drop down by gravity and enter the notches 1.5 to lock the boltI when said notches come in line with the slots 7. ln this position of the tumblers, the fingers 10 thereof are spaced a short distance from the lower ends of' the slots. Thus, when the hey is inserted into the key-hole 1G, and adjusted to place the bits 2O close to the ends of `the fingers 10, and then turned in the proper direction, the bits push against the ends of the fingers and the tumblers are raised to retract the portions which seat in the notches 15, thereby releasing the bolt, and allowing the latter to be advanced or retracted. The bolt can be reversed to project from either side of' the casing 5.
lock constructed as herein described is strong, durable and efficient, lit is entirely devoid of con'iplicated parts liable to get out of order, and in view of' the small number of parts employed it can be very cheaply manufactm'ed.
I claim:
1. A lock comprising a casing having a plurality of slots, and a passage intersecting one end of the slots, said passage having an undercut portion forming a keyhole which crosses the last-mentioned ends of' the slots, a bolt slidable in the passage and having notches, and tumblers slidably mounted in the slots and having shouldered portions entering the notches oli' the bolt when said notches are in alinement with the slots, said. tumblers having reduced port-ions extending from the shoulders and lying in the slots back of the bolt and terminating adjacent to the keyhole.
2. A lock comprising a casing having a plurality of slots, and a passage intersecting one end of the slots, said passage having an undercut portion forming a key-hole which crosses the last-mentioned ends of the slots, a bolt slidable in the passage and having notches, said bolt projecting from opposite sides of the housing and being reversible, and tumblers slidably mounted in the slots and having shouldered portions entering the notches of the bolt when said notches' are in alinement with the slots, said tumblers having reduced portions extending from the shoulders and lying in the slots back of the bolt and terminating adjacent to the key-hole.
3. A lock comprising a casing having a plurality of slots, and a passage intersecting one end of the slots, said passage having an undercut portion forming a key-hole 2o which crosses the last-mentioned ends of the slots, a bolt slidable in the passage and having notches, and tumblers l slidably mounted in the slots and having shouldered portions entering the notches of the bolt when said notches are in alinement with the slots, said tumblers having reduced portions extending from the shoulders and lying in that portion of the slots which is intersected by the passage, and spaced from the ends of said slots which are crossed by the key-hole.
In testimony whereof I aIiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
