DOOR-LOCK.
Application filed December 23, 1911.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29,1913.
Serial No. 667,422.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. BUCK- HALTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bradley, in the county of Escambia and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in door locks and more particularly to stock locks for barn doors and has for its object to produce a look of this character which will be operative only by the particular form of key adapted thereto.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lock of this character which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arran ement of parts hereinafter more fully descri ed, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation with the cover removed, with the locking bolt and tumblers in projected position; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the bolt and tumblers withdrawn and the key in operative position; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 indicates the lock casing, which may be of any desired shape and formed of metal or other suitable material and is provided with a detachable cover plate 2. The interior of the casing is provided with a longitudinal recess 3 forming a. guideway to receive the locking bolt 4., said locking bolt being operated by means of the pin 5 secured thereto and disposed in the slot 6 in the casing and a finger piece 7 is mounted on the outer end of said pin so that the same can be easily manipulated. The casing is also provided with a plurality of transversely disposed spaced slots 8. forming guide ways for the sliding tumblers 9.
The ends of each of the tumblers are cut away to form the reduced end 10 and a small recess 11 is formed in the reduced ends and adapted to receive the lugs 12 formed on the key 13. The locking bolt 4 is provided with a plurality of transverse notches 14 to receive the ends of the tumblers when the bolt is in its locked position, said tumblers being adapted to rest upon the lands 15 between the notches when the bolt a is in an unlocked position.
The key 13 is inserted in the casing through the circular opening 16 and a slot 17 is also provided adjacent the opening to allow of the passage of the lugs 12. The key is provided with an enlarged end 18 forming a handle for manipulating the same and a shoulder 19 is formed by said handle for hearing against the casing at the inlet to the opening 16. The end of the key opposite the handle is tapered down to a point 20 and adapted to be disposed in the opening 21. when the key is inserted in the casing to hold the same in the required position to operate the tumblers.
When it is desired to release the bolt from its locked position, the key is inserted as far as the shoulder 19 will permit and the lugs 12 will then be disposed opposite the recesses 11 in the tumblers, the key being then turned and the lugs engaging in the recesses until the tumblers are withdrawn from the notches 14, thus allowing the bolt to be withdrawn from its locked position by means of the finger piece 7. To look the bolt 4 in place the operation of the above is reversed.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A lock of the character described, comprising a casing having a bolt guide and a plurality of transversely disposed tumbler guides arranged at right angles to the bolt guide, a locking bolt slidingly mounted in the bolt guide and provided with spaced notches adapted to register with the tumbler guides when the bolt is in a locked position, means for actuating said bolt, tumblers slidingly mounted in the tumbler guides and adapted to engage in the notches formed in the locking bolt, each of said tumblers being provided with a reduced end having a recess formed therein, and a key insertible into the casing and mounted to turn therein 7 In testimony whereof I hereuntoafiix my and formed With a plurality of spaced lugs signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
engageable in the recesses formed in the reduced ends of the tumblers, whereby the WILLIAM BUCKHALTS' 5 tumblers may be moved out of the notches in Witnesses:
the locking bolt by and upon the turning NAvoLoN MARTIN, of the key. C. G. BROOKS.
