* Loo 1 To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ODIN SUNDLY, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Deer Park, in the county of St. CroiX, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a lock.
An object of the invention. is to provide a lock which will be durable and eliicient in use and in which provision is made for the alteration of the parts in such manner that they may be changed to be operated by a number of different keys. v
A further object of the invention is to so construct the device that the locking means will be automatically operated when inserted in the body of the lock.
With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as the description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a sec tion on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail of the locking core detached.
Referring to the drawing wherein likeparts are indicated by like characters throughout the several views :My device comprises a body portion 1 made of suitable metal and having a longitudinally extending hole 2 therethrough which terminates at the upper end in an elongated slot 3, the said slot being normally covered by means of a hinged plate 4.
On one side of the body portion ljis formed a pair of outwardly extending ears 5 between which is pivoted an varcuate shackle 6 on a bolt 7 In the end of this shackle 6 is formed a circular hole 8. The end of this shackle passes through an elongated slot 9 in one face of the member 1 and the hole 8 is brought into registration with the hole in the body portion 1. However, the diameter of this hole 8 is less than the diameter of the hole 2 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. In order that this shackle 6 may be locked in the body portion 1, I have provided a plunger 10 which has a barrel Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented Dec. 19, 1916. Application filed October 5,1914. Serial No. 86 5,167.
portionon one end thereof, the diameter Adjacent this barrel 11 is a reduced portion 12, the diameterof which is equal ,to the diameter of the hole 8 in the shackle 6 and 1 than thediameter of the hole 8. Secured to theshank 13 adjacent the head 14 is a being equal to the diameter of the hole 2.
pair of diverging leaf springs 15 which terminate adjacent the end of the portion 12.
Secured to the barrel 11 is-an outwardly extending projection 16 which; cooperates with a notch 17 in oneside of the body portion to determine the locking position of the bolt 10." j y In operation the free end of the shackle 6is placed in the slot 9 after having been passed about the member which is to be locked and the head 14 of the bolt 10 is passed through the end of the hole-2and through the hole 8 in the shackle 6, the bolt I 10 is then pushed inwardly and the springs 15 are pressed against the shank 13 by the free end of the shackle'6, the barrel 11 is then rotated until the projection 16 registers with the notch 17 at which time further movement of the bolt inwardly causes the ends of the springs 15 to pass beyond the free end of the shackle 6, at which time the ends of the springs fiy outwardly and bear against the inner face of the said shackle so that when in this position the said bolt 10 may not be removed without pushing the free ends of the springs inwardly toward the shank 13 and thus the shackle will be held in its locked position.
The head 14 is provided with a plurality of notches 18 which are adapted to 'co6p erate with projections on the key to allow the latter to be moved over the shank 13 in a manner now to be described.
When it is desired to release the free end of the shackle 6 a suitable key having .a hole that the key may be changed the end of the body portion 1 may be provided with a plurality of notches so that the projections 16 may be engaged in different notches as the occasion arises.
It may be thus seen that I have provide readily altered so as to necessitate the using of different keys.
lVhile I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, I have merely done so for the sake of convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment as it'is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the details of construction thereof without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is In a device of the class described, a casing having a longitudinally extending hole therethrough, a, shackle pivotally secured to one face of said casing, the said casing having a slot inthe said face through Which the free end of the shackle passes, said free end of the shackle having a hole therein registering with the hole in the body portion but of lesser diameter, a bolt arranged to be inserted in the hole in the body por tion and having a reduced portion on one end thereof adapted to fit the hole in the end of the shackle, said reduced portion carrying a further reduced portion forming a shank, ahead on the end of said shank, a plurality of leaf springs secured to said bolt and arranged to lie beneath said head with their ends housed behind said reduced portion in unlocking position, a projection on the said bolt, and a notch in the said casing arranged to cooperate with said projection to determine the locking position of the said bolt.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the Presence of two witnesses.
