Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1907.
Application filed July 23,1906. Serial No. 327,314.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Beit known that I, Louis ERNEST LEOPOLD THEMK, a subj ect ofthe King of Great Britain, residing at Strathcona, county of Strathcona, in the Province of Alberta,
Canada, machinist, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare that 'the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to door locks; the object of my invention is to provide a spring-actuated lock adapted to be unlocked fromeither side of the door by a biiurcated spring key being inserted into a tubular knob stem; a further object is to provide a durable efficient lock of few parts well secured together, which are easily set into the door in coperative position g and, my invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, I have illustrated one form of embodiment of this invention, in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a door, showing in longitudinal section the knob, its supporting stem,
. and the connecting parts; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the locking bolt casing, and showing the locking bolt connecting parts in elevation; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the locking bolt casing; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the bearing block; Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line 5-5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is an elevation of the locking bolt guide plate; Fig. 7 is a plan view ofthe key; Fig. 8 is a plan lview of the screw-threaded nut adapted to be used on each end of the knob stem, and Fig. 9 is a vertical section of a modified form of the'locking-bolt actuating means.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a door, in which is embedded a tubular casing 2, the side wall of which is cut away on two sides to permit ready insertion of the parts therein, said casing being secured to the door in any suitable way, as by means of the screws 3. Placed on the casing of the door opposite the casing 2, is a keeper 4, having a square opening.
The casing 2 is provided with a square opening 5 in its outer end wall, inv which is slidably disposed a locking bolt 6, having a round stem 7. A segmental plate 8 is disposed in a slot 8it in the casing 2, and is provided with the opening 9 to permit the passage of the stem 7, and is maintained in position as by the rivet 1() passing through one side o the wall of the casing, the shoulder S abutting against the wall of the slot 81.
Disposed around the stem 7 is a coil spring 11, one end of which thrusts against the squared head 6 of the locking bolt, and the other end of which thrusts against the segmental plate 8, so that the bolt 6 is normally maintained in its projected position, as shown in Fig. 2.
The inner end of the stem 7 is provided with a slot 12, in which is disposed a pin 13. Connected to the ends of the pin 13 are links 14, through the ends of which is passed a pin 15, passing through rotatable disksv 16, which disks are provided with an opening 17 to permit the passage of the knob stem, and provided with recesses 18, to permit the insertion of the key hereinafter described. The disks 16 are further connected by means of the pin 19. Rotatably supporting the disk`16 is a bearing block 20, provided with an opening 21 adapted to register with the openings 17 in the disks, the wall of the opening 21 being V-shaped. The bearing block 20 is provided with the segmental slots 22 to permit movement ofthe pins 15 and 19, when the disks 16 are rotated as hereinafter described. The bearing block 20 is provided with lugs 23, which are disposed in the slots 24 in the wall of the casing 2, by means of which the bearing block is maintained in position, said slots extending to the end of the casing 2. The casing 2 is disposed in an opening 25 in the door at right angles to the knob stem hereinafter described.
Disposed through the openings 17 and 21 of the disks 16 and the bearing block 20, is a loosely mounted open ended knob stem 26, having its opposite ends projecting beyond the faces of the door 1, and provided centrally of its ends with slots 27 adapted to register with the recesses 18 in the rotatable disks 16.
A special form of key, comprising a body 28, and ring 29 pivotally secured to the body, as by the head 30, and a bifurcated resilient member 31 provided with grooves 31 and pivoted as at 32, is adapted to be inserted in the tubular door stem 26, so that the bifurcated member 31 engages through the slots 27 and into the recesses 18 and the grooves 3la over the 'ST-shaped wall of the opening 2l in the block 20, so that the knob stem is secured to the disk 16 to rotate the same and retract the lockingbolt 6. The slot l2 in the stem 7 permits retraction of the locking bolt 6 without moving these parts, so that the door may be closed after it is once opened and locked without the use of a key. A suitable opening 33 is provided through the door 1 to permit the passage of the knob stem 26.
To provide means for preventing the locking stem 26 being disposed too far through the door, so that the slots 27 will not register with the recesses 18, on the outer face of the door is disposed a knob rose 34, having a flange engaging the Wall ofthe opening 33, and also provided with a projecting flange 36 having a bore 37 to permit the passage of the knob stem 26. The flange 36 is provided further with a recess 38, adapted to rotatably support the collar 39 formed integrally or secured to the locking stem 26, and adapted t0 orm a bearing therefor. The recess 38 is provided with a shoulder 40, against which the collar 39 abuts.
On the inner face of the door is disposed a knob rose 41, having a flange 42 disposed in the opening 33, and
having a bore 43 to form a bearing for the lockingV stem 26. The knob rose 41 is provided With a recess 44, adapted to receive a shoulder 45 formed on the inside face of the knob 46. The knob 46 is provided with a bore 47 so that it may be slipped over the stem 26, and is provided With a recess 48 in its outer face. Disposed in the recess 48 is a screw-threaded nut 49, which may be secured on the screw-threaded inner end of the knob stem 26. The nut 49 is provided with peripheral recesses 5() to permit the insertion of a suitable turning implement, whereby the stem may be forced into position and lock the knob 46. The knob is further locked by means of the set-screw 51, the inner end oi which bears on or passes through the Wall oi the knob stem 26. A similar nut 49 is disposed on the outer end oi the knob stem 26.
A suitable removable plug 56 is disposed in the bore oi the knob stem 26 to keep out dirt.
The modified structure shown in Fig. 9 comprises teeth 62 formed on the rotatable disks 16. Over the disks 16 is disposed a yoke 63, having teeth 64 in mesh With the teeth 62, and provided With an opening 65 to permit the passage of the pin 13, so that When the disks 16 are rocked, the bolt 6 Will be retracted.
rotatable members and provided with slots, and a bifur- -cated member' adapted to be inserted through the slots and to secure the stem to the rotatable members.
2. In a lock, the combination comprising a casing, a bearing block carried by the casing, rotatable members carried by the block and provided with recesses, a spring actuated locking bolt connected with the rotatable members, a tubular knob stem loosely disposed through the Vbearing block and the rotatable members, and provided with slots, to receive a bifurcated member adapted to be inserted through the slots and i-nto the recesses and to secure the stem to the rotatable members.
3. In a lock, the combination comprisingr a casing, a bearing block carried by the casing and provided with segmental slots, rotatable members carried by the block, pins disposed through the slots and secured to the rotatable members, links connected to the pins, a spring actuated locking bolt connected to the links, a knob stem disposed through the casing, and means for connecting the rotatable members with the knob stem.
