To all wlw/m, t may concern Be it known that I, PLEASANT Fonns'r MANNING, a citizen oit the United States, and a resident oit Oklahoma city, iu the county of Oklahoma and State ot Oklahoma, have invented certain new and nseful Improvements in Door-Locks.7 ot which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door locks and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangementsl herein described and claimed.
An object of .my invention is to reduce the trouble `and expense in fitting a lock in a door by providinga lock which may be inserted in a cylindrical opening' made by an ordinary brace and bit without the necessity of mortisng' the door.
A further object of my .invention is to reduce the number o parts and to lessen the cost of manufacture et' a goed substantial lock.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In carrying out my invention, I provide door knobs ot the form shown in Fig'. 1. The head 1 of the knob is hollow and is provided with an inwardly extending; lug 2 provided with `a cylindrical recess arrangement to receive the key cylinder 3. This is provided with grooves 11 and is designed to fit tightlyT in the recess 3. The cylinder is provided with a central slot arranged to receive the key rThe cylindrical extension 6 of the knob is recessed at 6x to provide means forlocli'ing the knob in place as will be explained later. At 1T l have shown the lsquared door knob shank which is designed to enter the squared openings in the members (3. One corner of the shank has a semicyliinlrical groove arranged to receive the cyliinlrical . members 7 and 9 ot' the locking' stem. As will be seen 'trein Fig'. 4i, this shank is provided with `a recess 1 t arranged to receive the projecting portieri oit the lug 9*. When the latter is turned to enter the recess 17a, the cylindrical portion of the knob cannot be withdrawn from the shank.
1n Figs. 2, 8 and 8 1 have shown the tumbler. This has a cylindrical portion 18 arranged to enter an opening in one side of the latch casing (see Fig. 1). 1t is provided with a squared recess 18X arranged to admit the shank 17 and has a semicylindrical recess 18y (see Fig. 2) arranged to receive the elongated gear 8. The body portion 18 is provided with an integral segment 18a of greater radius than the cylindrical portion 18. This segment is comparatively short so as to provide shoulders 187" which are arranged to engage the shoulders 142 on thel yoke 14y of the latch member 14. 1t is also provided with shoulders 18Z2 which are arranged to engage the shoulders 14Z2 of the latch member 14. On one side ofthe tumbler is a slot 18W (see Fig. 8a) through which the dog 15 passes in order to permit the engagement of the teeth 15Z of the dog with the teeth of the gear 8.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood.
1n assembling the device, a spring 19 is inserted in the U-shaped recess of the latch 14. This spring bearsV at one end on the latch and at the other on an inwardly projecting lug Q0 on one of the casing members. The rear end of the casing is secured by means of a screw 21, see Figs. 5 and 6.
1n Fig. 1, 1 have shown the latch in its outer position for holding the door to the jamb. 1n Fig. 6, the latch 14 is prevented from inward movement because the shoulder 15y of the dog 15 engages one of the arms 14y of the yoke. 1t will be impossible in this position, to move the latch inwardly by turning the door knob. 1f, now, the key 5 is inserted in the slot 14x of the head 11 (which is disposed between the end of the cylinder and the inner end of the recess in the lug 2 of the door knob) and turned, it will cause the rotation of the gear 8 and also of the dog` l5 (see Fig. 6), thus raising the dog 15 so that the shoulder 15y is free of the arm 141' of the yoke. The dog is prevented from rcturning to its original position by frictional contact upon the side of t-he casing, this frictional contact being secured by means of the spring 16, as before explained. New when the door knob is turned it will revolve the tumbler 18. One of the shoulders 182 of the tumbler will first engage one of the shoulders 142 of the latch. This will cause a partial retraction of the latch against the tension of t-he spring 19. On the further turning of the knob one of the shoulders 18Z2 will come into engagement with one of the shoulders 14Z2 on t-he latch 14, thereby causing a further retraction of the latch. 1t will be readily seen that the purpose of the two shoulders 182 and 18Z2 on the tumbler 18 is to provide for an extended movement of the latch.
At the same time that t-he gear 8 is turned to move the locking dog 15, the lugs 9X will be turned into the position shown in Fig. 4, in which they have entered the recesses (i. This will prevent the removal of the door knobs while the doo-r is locked. Vihen the door is unlocked, the lugs 9X will be rotated into their respective recesses 17a, see Fig. 4, and then when the set screw 22 is loosened, the knob may be removed in the ordinary manner.
1t will be seen that 1 have provided a com-- bined door latch and lock. r1`he cylindrical latch casing will enter an ordinary cylindrical opening made by a brace and bit. The transverse bore 28 through which the shank 17 and the stein passes may be of suiiicient diameter to permit the ready movement of these parts. r1`he ends of this transverse opening 28 may be covered by a door knob plate 24 of the ordinary construction.
