Be it known that I, WILLIAM HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Jefferson and State of Illinois, have invented anew and useful Combined Lock and Latch, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to a combined lock and latch, and particularly to that class known as mortise locksf7 and it has for its objectto provide a device of this character which may be operated as an ordinary latch, and at the same time serve the purpose of a lock; to provide a device of this character which shall be cheap and simple in its construction, and one that will occupy a minimum amount of space.

Vtith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a combined lock and latch constructed in accordance with my invention, the side of the casing being removed to show its interior con struction. Fig. 2 is atransverse section on the line x .fr of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a view of the inner side of one-half or section of the easing. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the key used with my improved lock, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the sliding plate for holding the tumblers in position when locked.

In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents the shell or casing, which is provided with the usual opening for thepassage of the knobspindle. This shell or casing A consists of two parts or sections, and one of said sections has cast integral therewith at its forward end a cross-strip, B, having an opening` for the passage of the bolt, as will be explained hereinafter. On the inner side of the casing A, near the forward end thereof, upon each side, is formed an offset or shoulder, b.

B represents the bolt, which consists of the side strips, c, connected at their ends by a curved portion, d, forming shoulders e. The sides are connected at their forward ends by means of the bolt-plate C. Extending inwardly from the sides of the bolt, at the forward end rlhe plate D is recessed, as shown at to form a seat for the reception of a fiat spring, one end of which bears against ashoulder.j,formed by the reeessing of the plate D, while the other end extends through the open end of the plate and is seated in a slit, 7.1, formed upon the rear side ofthe bolt-platc.

E represents a sleeve having a rectangular opening for lthe passage of the knob-spindle. Said sleeve is also provided with outwardly extending lugs adapted to bear against the` shoulders `on the holt. It will be seen that when said sleeve is turned in either direction by the knob-spindle the bolt will be moved rearwardlyT by one of the lugs of said sleeve.

G represents tumblers, which are pivoted to the inner sides of the casing.V These tumblers have openings in their upper ends for the reception of the bit or web of the key, and recesses .m at their lower ends to receive the nibs of the sliding plate when the bolt is locked, the ends of the tumblers bearing against the bolt-plate and holding it against backward movement.

The operation is as follows: The key is inserted in the opening of the casing and turned. The bit or web of said key engages the openings in the tumblers, the end of the bit or web pushing the sliding plate forward to allow the tuinblers to pass the nibs of the same.
