LOCK.
Application filed May 29, 1919.
To all whom t may concern.'
Pe it known that I. JoUZas Knnasnvroz, en ot Russia, residing at 2138 Peltus St., So. Jimboy, county ot Middlesex, and State ot New Jersey, have' invented certain new and useful mproyemei'its in Locks, ot which the following is a specification.
rilhis invention has as its object the provision of lock adapted to be applied to ordinary hinged doors whereby they may be secured in position.
t further object is to provide a latch bolt capable or" being locked when in an extended position, against movement by the `ordinary handles.
A still further object is to provide a lock which may be operated from either side of the 'door by a special key, the lock bolt being held when in an extender posit-ion against pressure applied to the end ot the same.
rhese and other objects are attained by the novel construction and combination ot parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 1 1 of F ig. el.
vF ig. 2 is a similailongitudinal sectional view taken on line Q-Q of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a transverse view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
F ig. 4L, is a similar longitudinal sectional view taken on line L.1 /l of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken. through the knobs used to operate the latch bolt.
Referringl to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 indicates the lock casing7 having an opening' near one end from which projects the latch bolt 11, having a beveled surface 12. The stem 13 of the latch bolt is cylindrical and formed in it is an elongated slot 14, through which passes a pin 15, set in the lock casing.
Abutting against the pin 15 and latch bolt 11 are the coils of a compression spring 1G, adapted to normally proj-ect the bolt outwardly.
Formeel at the inner end oit the stein is a transverse, bar-like member 17, carrying pivots 18, one end of the bar projecting to some distance beyond the pivot. These Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1920.
Serial No. 300,666.
pivots are engaged in slots 20, formed in the ends of links 21, pivoted on pins 22 to the opposit'efly disposed angular arms 23, of an actuating lever having a hub 2li, the extending ends 25 et which journaled in the opposite sides of the loch casing 1t), the hub having a rectangular aperture 25, receptive of a square bar :97, having at one end a -hub 28 of knob 219, held by the screw 36, an oppositely disposed knob 30 being secured at the *opposite end ot the bar bv a pin 31 set in the outer end of a lever contained in a recess in the bar 2, and normally pressed outward by a flat spring 33, a plurality ot holes being formed in the hub 35 ot' the knob so that'it may be adjusted at diiierent distances upon the bar 27. Thus it will be seen that upon turning either ot the knobs the lever will be actuated and the latch bolt 11 retracted within the casing.
Fixed upon the end wall of the casing is a plate 38 containing a slot in which operates a pin 39, having an actuating extending head Ll() the pin being adapted to make Contact with a spring element 4:1, formed with a tlat base 412, having a loop 43, and outwardly turned terminal 4d, which, when the pin 39 is pressed outwardly in the slot, in the direction of the latch bolt, intercepts the extension 19 of the bar 17, thereby preventing' the latch bolt from being retracted. thus forming one element of the lock. I
A lock bolt haring an extending head 50. formed with a bar 51, is slidably engaged within the lock easing, 'and guided at its inner end between a. pair ot raised projections 52 so as to cause the lock bolt to move in a straight lino.
Formed upon one ot the side edges oi` the lock bar 51 are a pair of lugs having between them a recess 5d adapted to receive a block 55 pressed normally therein by the end ot a Hat spring 5G, the spring being coiled about a pivot 57, set in the wall ot the casing, the block 55 engaging between the lugs when the bolt is extended to its eX- treme limit of movement.
The block is formed upon a plate 5S pivoted on the pin el-7 and freely, movable below the look bar 51, opposite its edge exteneing so that when a key is entered, the plate may be forced *wardlyn moving the block 55 out of engagement with the lugs and permitting the lock bolt to be moved in either direction.
Extending from the side of the lock bar 51, opposite to the lugs 53, are pairs of spaced projections 59 and 60 for purposes which will be further on disclosed.
Formed upon opposite sides of the lock casing are cylindrical extensions 62, opposite to which are the key entrances 63, receptive of a peculiar key, indicated generally by the numeral 64:, which upon being entered engages central stems 65, formed with the screws 66, entering the'cap portions of the extension 62, and which are surrounded by the coils of springs 67, these springs pressing against the cap portions at one end and with sleeves 68 at their outer ends, the sleeves having flanges 69 through which the bolts 66 pass.
These sleeves are rotatable within the recesses 70 formed in the extensions and are provided with oppositely disposed lugs 71 movable in recesses 72, when pressed in by the key, so as to pass the extending flanged Y edges 7 3, which are formed level with the interior of the lock casing.
Also extending from the flanges 69 are a pair of opposed conical pins 75 which enter into corresponding openings formed in the head of the key so as to cause the sleeve to be rotated, the enveloping portion of the key making contact between the projections 59 or 60 of the locks bar 5l, after irst having displaced the plate 58, thereby permitting the lock bolt to be moved i'n the ordinary manner.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a key may be entered from either side of the door and engage with either the projections 59 or 60 of the lock bolt whereby the desired result may be obtained.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. ln a lock, the combination with a casing, a latch bolt and a lock bolt operable therein, of a stem on said latch bolt, a spring surrounding said latch stem, a Vtransverse bar formed with said stem, slotted links engaging with the ends of said bar, a double armed lever pivoted tol said links, knobs extending from each side of said casing, adapted to actuate said lever, a detent spring secured in the casing of said lock, said detent spring being engageable with said transverse bar whereby it is held when in an extended position, and means for releasing said detent spring so that the latch bolt may be operated by said knobs.
2. In a lock, the combination with a casing, a lock bolt slidably engaged transversely thereof, and means for holding said lock bolt in either of its positions, of a pair of cylindrical extensions formed upon opposite sides of said casing, sleeves rotatable therein, means 'fonnormally preventing the rotation of said sleeves, and a key adapted to press said sleeves inward for allowing rotation of' said sleeves, said sleeves normally preventing rotation of said key and said key adapted to release said holding means to operate the bolt and the wards of said key engaging with the projections of said lock bolt wherebyit may be operated.
In testimony whereof I have aliixed my signature.
