The present invention relates to looks for doors and the like such as overhead doors-which as sume a vertical position when closed and are adapted, for example, for vertical sliding movement relative to the door jamb. However, the lock may be used with other types ofv doors such as those hinged together or to a door jamb.
One object of this invention is to provide an improved lock structure which will afiford locking and operating mechanisms which are'quick acting, rugged and durable. As a further feature of this object of the invention, the components of the locking and operating mechanisms comprise rugged and relatively large parts effectively interfittedand interconnected so. as to provide a minimum of bearing surfaces and frictional contact. p
A further object of the invention is to provide simple and effective; holding-means for releasably maintaining the bolt of the door lock in either extended or retracted position, the door look also including bolt operating means which are designed to overcome the force of said bolt holding means without placing undue strain upon a conventional key by which said operating mechanism is actuated to move the bolt of the door lock in either looking or unlocking directions.
Details of these objects and of the invention, as well as other objects thereof, are set forth in the following specification and. illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof.

The door lock comprising the present invention is composed of a plurality of assembled elements including a frame l8 which is secured adjacent one side edge of the door I0 at any suitable location by a plurality of screws 20. Said frame is preferably formed from flat sheet metal and as shown in'Fig. '3. The frame is bent so as to be U-shaped in' cross section to provide spaced sides 22. the latter being slightly wider than the former for purposes to be described.
Slidably mounted within said apertures for transverse movement through the frame is a rugged elongated bolt 28 which may be of any appro priate shape or length. The end of the bolt oppo site the locking end is provided with an outwardly bent ear 3!] by which the bolt may be manually manipulated when desired. It will be understood that the frame [8 will be mounted on the inside surface of the door and thus the ear 39 permits manual actuation, and particularly retraction of the bolt, whereby the door may be actuated from the inside surface of the door.
Secured to'and longitudinally of the bolt 28 is a flat member 32 having a detent 34 extending transversely theretoat one end and a stop 36 extending transversely thereto at the other end. As shown in full lines in Fig. 2 and dotted line in Fig. 3, the stop 36 engages one of the sides 22 of the frame to limit movement of the bolt in looking direction. v Struck outward'from the plane of the base portion of the frame I8 is a flat tongue 38 which is substantially parallel to the base portion of the frame as well as the door ill. Said tongue is provided with an aperture 40 located substantially centrally of the frame l8 when viewed in Figs. land 5. The walls of said aperture rotatably support a cup-shaped member 42 having formed in its bottom a cross-shaped opening 44.
The walls of the cup-shaped member 42 which engage the walls of the aperture 40 have a smaller diameter than the bottom of the cupshaped member 42 and the outer edge of said cup-shaped member is swaged so as to provide a laterally extending flange 46. Said flange is interrupted as shown at 48 for purposes to be described.
Secured to the cup-shaped member 42 so as to be rotatable therewith relative to the frame i8 of the door lock is a substantially flat bolt actuating member 50 which is apertured intermediate the ends thereof to receive the side walls of the cup-shaped member 42 prior to the same being swaged to form the flange 46. Extending into said aperture is a tongue 52 which is received in the interruption 48 within the flange 46 so as to key the actuating member 56 to the cupshaped member 42. As is readily seen in Figs. 1 and 5, the actuating member 50 is provided at eachend with'a finger 54. In plan view, the actuating member 50 is therefore substantially U-shaped.
' Holding means for maintaining the bolt in either one of its two positions referred to comprisea resilient spring 56 which, in the view illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, is generally U-shaped. The intermediate portion which connects the sides of the U-shaped spring 56 is relatively long as showninthes'e figures and theouter ends of the side portionsof said spring are bent laterally in opposite directions'to provide a pair of spaced fingers 58 which are disposed in flat notches 64 formed in one wall of each of the apertures 24 and 25. It will thus be seen that the bolt 28 is slidable relative to and maintains one finger 58 in one flat notch 60 while the bolt 28 and member 32 maintain the other finger 58 in the other flat notch 60.
Referring to Fig. 5 particularly, it will be seen that the fingers 5B are not as wide as the spring 56. Thus, the shoulders 62 on said spring will engage the inner surfaces of the sides 22 of the frame so as to prevent movement of the spring relative to the frame in a direction parallel to the movement of the bolt 28.
The elongated portion of the spring 56 which connects the sides thereof is shaped so that a substantial portion thereof is offset toward the bolt 28 to provide a pair of shoulder portions 64 which are respectively engageable by opposite surfaces of the free end of detent 34 when the bolt is in its two positions referred to above. Thus, the spacing of the shoulder portions 64 is in accordance with or corresponds to the spacing between said two positions of the bolt 28. V
Actuating member 53 is manipulated by any suitable means such as a conventional key 65 for a cylinder lock 68 which is mounted in an aperture within the door I0. Since said cylinder lock does not comprise any part of the present invention, the same has only been illustrated in an exemplary manner. It should be sufficient for the present description to state that the lock is secured within its aperture in the'door bya plate which is secured to the lock by screws 12.
Projecting from the end ofthe cylinderlock 68 opposite that in which the key is inserted is a fiat tongue '54 which is interconnected with key 66 so as to be operable directly in accordance with the movement of said key. Tongue 14 is disposed within one of the cross slots of the cross-shaped opening 44 within the cup-shaped member 42, whereby rotation of the tongue 14 rotatably moves actuating member 50 toward one or the other of its two extreme positions, thus also slidably moving bolt 28 to one or the other of its two aforementioned positions.
Assuming that the bolt 28 is in locked or extended position as illustrated in full lines in Fig. 1, the locking end of said bolt will be disposed beneath a strike 16 which is secured to the door jamb l2 in the event that the door is to beheld against upward movement. If it is desired to unlock the door from the outside thereof, the key 66 is rotated so as to move the actuating member 50 in counterclockwise directionas viewed in Fig. 1. In this event the righthand finger 54 will engage the adjacent surface of the detent 34 while said finger is extended substantially transversely to the longitudinal axis of the bolt 28. Continued movement of the member 50 will cause the end of said finger 54 to slidably move along said surface of the detent 34 in a camming manner, causing the outer end of the detent 34 tomove past the shoulder portion 64 of the spring 56 which is engaged thereby, thereby deflecting saidshoulder and offset portion of said spring outward relative to the end of said detent by such movement.
Still further movement of the actuating member 50 in said counterclockwise direction will cause the outer end of the detent 34 to frictionally slide relative to the elongated offset portion of the spring until the detent reaches the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3, wherein; the detentwill be positioned so that the other shoulder portion 64 of the spring 56 may snap into position behind the end of the detent and releasably hold it in the retracted position of the bolt illustrated in full lines in Fig. 3, and in dotted lines in Fig. 2. Inthis position member and detent 34 will be in the relative positions thereof illustrated in Fig. 5.
If the door is to be locked from the outside, the key 66 is rotated in the direction to move the actuating member 50 in clockwise direction as viewed in Figs. 1 and 5. At the start of such locking operation, the actuating member 50 may be in either of the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 5 or in any intermediate position therebetween. In any event, the lefthand finger 54 as viewed in Fig. l, or the lower finger as viewed in Fig. 5, will engage the lefthand surface of the detent 34 in the position thereof viewed in Fig. 5 and continued movement of the actuating member 50 in clockwise direction will cause the end of said finger 54 to slidably cam the detent 34 toward the right as viewed in Figs. 1 and 5.
Such movement of the bolt will first cause the detent 34 to cam the shoulder portion 64 of the spring engaged by said detent away from the end of said detent, whereby the end of the detent will slide relative to the elongated connecting portion of the spring 55 until the detent reaches the other shoulder portion 64 which will snap into position behind the end of said detent 34. At this time the bolt is fully extended into locking position.
The construction of said spring and the manner in which it coacts with the'detent 34 comprise one of the salient features of the invention. In view of the relationship between the finger 54 and detent 34 at the'commencement of movement of the bolt from one of its positions to the other, as well as the shape of said fingers and the relationship thereof to the pivot point of the actuating member, only a small amount of force is required to deflect spring 56 and cam the detent past the shoulder portions 64. The key 66 is thus relieved of undue strain; Usually such keys are formed from brass or other alloys which are relatively soft and do not readily resist undue bending or twisting.
From the foregoing it will therefore be seen that the bolt holding means comprising the resilient spring 56 is a very simple and eflicient means for releasably maintaining the bolt 28 in either of its two positions.
As stated hereinabove, stop 36 limits the movement of bolt 28 by engaging one of the sides 22 of the frame when the bolt is moving toward locking position. Member 32 is also provided with an up struck dog 18 which is engageable with the lefthan'd side 22 of the frame as viewed in Fig. 5 to limit the movement of the bolt in retracting direction.
The components of the lock on the interior of the frame l8 are preferably enclosed in any suitable manner such as by a snap actuating sheet metal cover which has lnturne'd ends respectively engaging the top and bottom of the frame It! as viewed in Fig. 4. If desired, said cover may be provided with an'open ing 82 in which a screw driver or any other appropriate tool may be inserted for the purpose of unsnapping the cover from the frame when it is desired to gain admission to the interior thereof.
While the invention has been illustrated and described in its preferred embodiment and has included certain details, it should be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the precise details herein illustrated and described since the same may be carried out in other ways, fallin within the scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim as my invention:
1. A lock comprising in combination, a frame, a substantially flat bolt mounted to move transversely through said frame between two spaced positions, a detent fixed to and projecting perpendicularly from one planar surface of said bolt, a resilient member having a portion parallelto and spaced opposite said surface of said bolt and having a plurality of detent receiving recesses spaced longitudinally on said portion in accordance with the spacing of said two positions, and actuating means engageable with said detent to move said bolt between said two positions, the outer end of said detent being receivable respectively within said detent receiving recesses when said bolt is in either of said two positions to releasably retain said bolt in said positions.
2. A lock comprising in combination, a frame, a substantially flat bolt mounted to move transversely through said frame between two spaced positions, a detent fixed to and projecting perpendicularly from one planar surface of said bolt, a resilient spring having a portion parallel to and spaced opposite said surface of said bolt and said portion having a plurality of shoulders spaced longitudinally thereon in accordance with the spacing of said two positions of said bolt and partially defining recesses arranged to receive the outer end of said detent, and actuating means movable between said bolt and spring and engageable with said detent and operable to move said bolt between said two positions, said detent being receivable respectively within said recesses and engageable with one of said shoulders when said bolt is in either of said two positions to releasably retain said bolt in said positions.
3. A look comprising in combination, a frame having spaced sides, a substantially flat bolt mounted for longitudinal movement transversely through said sides between two spaced positions, a detent fixed to and projecting perpendicularly from one planar surface of said bolt, a longitudinal resilient spring extending between said sides of said frame and supported thereby in parallel relation to and opposite said surface of said bolt, said sprin having a plurality of shoulders thereon spaced in accordance with the spacing of said two positions of said bolt and partially defining recesses arranged to receive the outer end of said detent, and actuating means engageable with said detent and operable to move said bolt between said two positions, the outer end of said detent being receivable respectively within said recesses and engageable with one of said shoulders when said bolt is in either of said two positions to releasably retain said bolt in said positions.
4. A lock comprising in combination, a frame having spaced sides provided with apertures, a substantially fiat bolt mounted to move transversely through the apertures of said sides between two spaced positions, a detent fixed to and projecting perpendicularly from one planar surface of said bolt, a U-shaped sprin having an elongated portion connecting the sides thereof and bent to provide a pair of shoulders spaced longitudinally on said portion in accordance with the spacing of said two positions and partially defining recesses, said connecting portion being in spaced parallel relation to and opposite said surface of said bolt and the sides of said U- shaped spring having laterally and oppositely extending ears parallel to said connecting portion and disposed in slidable engagement with said bolt within the apertures of the sides of said frame for support thereby, and actuatin means engageable with said detent and operable to move said bolt between said two positions, said detent being receivable respectively within said recesses engageable in abutting relation with one of said shoulders when said bolt is in either of said two positions to releasably retain said bolt in said positions.
5. A look comprising in combination, a frame, a substantially flat bolt mounted to move transversely through said frame between two spaced positions, a detent fixed to and projecting perpendicularly from one planar surface of said bolt, and a U-shaped spring supported by said frame and having an elongated intermediate portion connecting the sides of said spring and disposed in parallel spaced relation to and opposite said one surface of said bolt, the intermediate portion of said connecting portion being laterally oifset toward said bolt to provide a pair of shoulders at the ends of said offset portion spaced apart in accordance with the two positions of said bolt and the outer end of said detent being engageable respectively with said shoulders when said bolt is in either of said two positions to releasably maintain said bolt therein, the flexibility of said spring permitting said intermediate offset portion thereof and the shoulder engaged by said detent to be flexed away from said bolt by said detent when moving from engagement with said shoulder to engage ment with the other shoulder and actuating means engageable with said detent and operable to actuate said bolt in opposite directions.
6. A look comprising in combination, a frame, a substantially flat bolt mounted to move transversely through said frame between two spaced positions, a detent on said bolt extending perpendicularly from one planar surface thereof, resilient holding means releasably engageable with said detent and operable to maintain said bolt in either of said positions, and bolt actuating means comprising a U-shaped member pivoted relative to said frame intermediately of the ends of said member and adjacent said bolt and the sides of said U-shaped member comprising fingers respectively engageable with said detent when in said positions, said fingers being positionable to extend substantially transversely to the longitudinal axis of said bolt and when so positioned one of said fingers being adjacent said detent when said bolt is in one of said positions thereof, whereby when said member is pivotally moved in one direction said one of said fingers will cammingly slide relative to said detent and thereby move said bolt so as to overcome the force of said holding means and then move said bolt to its other position.
