SFEGIFIOATION forming part of Letters 19atent No. 640,297, dated January 2, 1900. Application iiled October 5,1899. Seriallllo|7321664n (No model.)
.To @ZZ wiz/0711, t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. MAsrEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Dodge and State of Nebraska, have invented a certain new and useful Bicycle-Lock, of which the following is a specification.
M y invention relates to padlocks of the permutation type; and the object thereof is to provide a cheap, simple, and durable device of the kind described which can only be opened or unlocked by a person con versant with a prearranged combination.
My invention consists in certain parts and combination of parts, which will be specifically described in the following specification, recited in the claims, and illustrated in the drawings forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a lock constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same, showing the parts in the position they assume when the lock is open. Fig. 8 is a similar view showing the position of the parts when the device is closed. Fig. is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 4 et of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail view of the several cam-disks.
Referring now to the drawings by reference-nnmerals, l0 indicates the lock-case,hav ing a substantially rectangular recess 11, in which is slidably secured rectangularly the shackle-carrying frame 12, from which the shackle 13 depends and projects through a slot 14 in the end of the case. The lock-case is provided with an upwardly-projecting pin 1st, on which is loosely mounted the disktumbler 15, out away to provide a straight side 16, whereby the disk is adapted to exert a cam action upon the upper bar 17 of the shackle-frame 12. This disk is provided with a segmental slot 18, (about a quadrant,) as will be more fully described hereinafter. 19
is a similar disk-tumbler journaled concentric with the iirst-named tumbler and provided with a substantially semicircular slot 20, registering with the slot 18.
21 isa tumbler-throwing disk carrying a pin 22, working the slots 1S and 2O of the tumbler,
sleeved on the pin la, and carrying a cen-y tral circular shoulder 23, projecting through a registering opening in the lock-case cover 24 and rigidly secured to the indicating-star 25 by means of pins 2G, said star indicating the several points of the combination on the graduated scale 27 of the lock-case cover.
28 are two upwardly-projecting lugs connected to the bar 29 by means of links 30, and extending from said bar 29 is a chain 3l, on the end of which is a swivel-line 32 for engagement with the shackle-hook when it is desired to use the device as a bicycle-lock.
The operation of my device is as follows: All the parts being assembled and lying in the position shown in Fig. 2, the shackle will be unlocked. Now suppose it is desired to apply the lock. The indicating wheel is turned to the left or right several times, carrying the tumbler-throwing disk within and by means of the pin 14 rotating the tumblers until they form a complete circle, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby raising the shackle-frame and locking the hooked end of the shackle within the lock-case.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l` The combination with a case having a rectangular recess therein, of a pin projecting from said case centrally of the recess, a shackle-carrying frame slidable in said recess and surrounding said pin, a plurality of camturnblers loosely journaled on said pin and adapted to slide the shackle-carrying frame and means for actuating the tuinblers, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a casing havinga rectangular recess, a shackle slidably secured in said recess and projecting through the casing, the ca1n- tuinblers 15 and 19 journaled concentric of the recess and adapted to slide the shackle and lock the same and an indicator-wheel carrying a disk on which is apin to rotate the tumblers, substantially as de* scribed.
