LOCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM J. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new anduseful Lock, of which the followingis a specification.
. This invention has for itsobject a lock mechanism' especially applicable for padlocks which is particularly simple in construction, economical in manufacture and highly e'flicient and durable in use;,and the invention consistsin the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed. I
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate partsinall the views. I
Figure 1 is an elevation ofa padlock embodying one form o'f'my invention, the front section of the casing being removed and the lock mechanism being shown in its operative position. 7
Figure 2 is aview similar to Fig. 1 showing the position of the lock mechanism after the shackle is opened.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the lock mechanism in an intermediate position occupied just after theshackle is releasedand before it springs to its open position. I
Figure 4 is a tumblers.
' Figure'5 is a'sectional view vation,'taken on line 5+5, Fig.
This lock comprises generally, a casing, a 'locln'ng member as a shackle and lock mechanism. mounted in the casing and coacting with the shackle to open the same detail view of one of the after the locking mechanism has been open ated far enough to release the shackle. I
*1 designates the casing which may be of any suitable form, size and construction, it
being preferably composed ofbase and front sections 2, 2 which are held together by p osts 3, 4:, 5, Sand 7 rising from the base section and which havereduced portions for entering corresponding holes in the top sec tion 2 these reduced portions having their heads riveted or spread to form shoulders which prevent the removal of the front section 2". a D 8 designates thev shacklewhlch is pivoted at one end on the post :7 and has its other correspondingpartly in ele- Specification of Letters Patent. end movable through a suitable opening 9 1n the casing to cooperate with the lock mechanism. V
10 designates the tumblers of the lock mechanism. There may be any number of tumblers and in this embodiment of my invention I have-shown two.
are spring pressed and are provided with means coacting with the shackle to .open the shackle after the tumblers have been-moved by the key against the action'of the spring far enough to release the shackle. 'Each tumbler as here shown is slidably mounted inthe casing and also has a slight pivotal movement to open the shackle after the tumbler .has been moved ,rectilinea'rly .far enough to release the free en'd'of the, shackle.
As here shown, the tumblerincludes abody, 11 having a bearing 'as a slotor notch 12 on" The tumblersholds the tumblers in their operative engagement with the shackle and also moves the shackle pivotally about the post 4 to open the shackle after} being released from. the. tumblers. p; r p The tumbler-is formed with an upwardly extending part 17 here shown as inthe form of a hook for interlocking with the notched or hook shaped end 18 at the freeend ofthe shackle, and'thetumbler is also shown .as formed with a depending arm 19e2'ztending' downwardly from the body for engaging the bit of the key. The parts shackle to latch into engagement with the tumblers. I i i The surface 15 at the'pivoted end ofthe shackle,-has a cam or backed ofi portion 20 which permits the tumblers to have aforward pivotal movement after the shackle has been released so that the ends offthe hook shaped parts 17' of the tumblers close the opening 9 when the lock is unlocked and also the shackle has a seat or notchp2l at v 17,18 areprovided' with curved faces 17, 18Fwhichpe'rmitthe let the end of the surface '20 for receiving a tooth or'corner 22 on the tumbler whereby after the" tumbler has been moved far enough to release the free end of the shackle,
the tooth 22 enters the notch 21 and causes the pivotal movement of the tumbler under the reaction of the spring to be transferred to the shackle and open the shackle.
23 is a ward, here shown as having a base plate 24; mounted between the posts 4:, 5 and held in position by said posts.
' The spring 16, as here shown is a coiled spring encircling the post 6 and has arms 25,, 26 at its opposite ends, one of which as 25 presses againstthe casing and the other- 26 "against the tumblers.
The tumblers may be pressed from sheet metal and in order'to space the same apart, are provided with marginal flanges 27 the edges of which rest either upon the inner face'of the base plate 2 or on the upper face of the adjacent tumbler. I
" In assembling the lock, the shackle 8 is placed upon the post 7, the ward 23 between posts 4, 5, the spring 16 on the post 6, and the tumblers on the post 4 i "In operation during the unlockingo'f the lock, the bit of the key engages the portions 19 of the tumblers and causes the tumblers to move *rect-ilinearly to the right, the tumblers being guided in their movement on the its openposition, the tumblers during this movement moving into the position shown in Figure. 2. During closing of the shackle thecam surface part 20 slightly moves the tumblers pivotally in a retrograde direction so that the curved surface 18 on the shackle can engage the curved surfaces 17 on the tumbler and; cause the shackle to latch into interlocking engagement with the tumbler.
Vllhat I claim is: V v v 1. A look comprising a casing, a shackle and lock mechanism located within the easing comprising a shiftable tumbler comprising a single member having a part rigid therewith, means coacting with the shackle to move the same into its open position when the lock mechanism has been operated to shift the tumbler and release the shackle, substantially as and for the purpose described. V
