COMBINATION-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER J. Enter, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Leeds Village, in the Province of Quebec and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The invention provides a lock particularly designed for sliding doors and like closures. However, it is to be understood that the invention may be adapted to all varieties of locks for which it is susceptible.
The invention has for its object to supply a lock of the permutation species embodying a rotary lock bolt and cooperating parts for rendering the lock secure and admitting of its easy operation by one acquainted with the combination, the lock embodying a minimum number of parts and of such structure as to prevent its opening by the average person.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a. front view of a portion of a closure provided with a lock embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 1-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a view of the parts illustrated in Fig. 1, showing the relation of the parts when the lock is open and the closure partly moved away from the jamb or part against which it closes. Fig. 6 is a detail section on the line 6--6 of Fig. 5, showing the parts on a larger scale.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates the closure and 2 the jamb or part against which the closure 1 closes. or part 2 and comprises a plate 3 and a catch 4, the latter being of hook form and having the engaging portion formed on the arc of a circle corresponding with the circumference of the rotary lock bolt. The lock proper comprises a front plate 5 having a A keeper is secured to the jamb,
recessed portion 6, which is provided upon its inner wall with an index or dial 7 The front plate with its recessed portion 6 is let into the part 1 so as to come flush with the surface thereof, as indicated most clearly in Figs. 2 and 3. This prevents projection of the operating knobs whereby the rotary lock bolt and tumbler are moved. The lock casing 8 is let into the part 1 and comprises a rimv and front and back plates, one or both of the plates being detachable from the rim according to the design of construction. The operating spindle 9 is mounted in the front and back plates of the lock casing and extends into the recessed portion of the front plate 5 and is provided at its outer end with a knob v1O, which is supplied with an index or point to cooperate with the graduations and markings of the dial 7 to determine the proper position of the rotary lock bolt when open. The rotary lock bolt is secured to the inner end of the operating spindle 9 so as to rotate therewith and consists of a disk 11 and an oflstanding rim or flange 12, the lat ter having a portion cut away, as indicated at 13, to receive the curved engaging portion of the catch 1. The operating spindle 9 is provided near its inner end with an angular portion 1 1, which fits in a corresponding opening formed in the disk 11, thereby causing the spindle and rotary lock bolt to move in unison. A pair of dogs 15 and 16 are located within the lock casing, preferably at the rear thereof and their ends are adapted to project into the cutaway portion 13 of the rim or flange 12 of the rotary lock bolt and hold the latter against movement when engaged with the keeper, thereby rendering the lock secure and preventing unauthorized opening thereof. The dogs 15 and 16 are mounted upon a pin 17 and their ends are widened to receive the pressure of a flat spring 18, which normally holds the free ends of the dogs pressed inward so as to enter the cutaway portion 13 of the rotary lock bolt. The engaging ends of the dogs 15 and 16 are widened so as to enter the cutaway portion 13 and engage with the ends of the rim or flange 12 bordering upon said cutaway portion, thereby holding the rotary lock bolt against movement. A pin 19 forms a stop to limit the inward movement of the dogs.
The tumbler 20 is mounted to receive both a rotary and a longitudinal movement. The inner portion of the tumbler 20 has an elonthe rotary lock gated opening or slot 21 through which the spindle 9 and tumbler operating sleeve 22 pass. The outer end of the tumbler 20 is contracted 'or made narrow and is adapted to engage one or the other of the dogs 15 or 16, so as to move the same outward at their free ends and release the rotary lock bolt. Rack teeth 23 are provided upon a face of the tumbler at one side of the opening 21 and mesh with the teeth of a pinion 24 at the inner end of the sleeve 22. The tumbler operating sleeve 22 is mounted upon the operating spindle 9 and passes through the inner wall of the recessed portion of the front plate 5 and through the back wall of the lock casing and through the opening 2]. of the tumbler 2 the outer end of the sleeve 22 and is pro vided with a pointer to cooperate with the graduations of the index or dial 7. A spring actuated pin 26 is mounted in an opening formed transversely of the tumbler near its contracted end and is adapted to cooperate with any one of a series of formed upon the adjacent face of so as to support the contracted tumbler and direct the same in its longitudinal movements. The guide grooves 27 are of V-form and the engaging end of the spring actuated guide pin 26 is beveled upon opposite sides, thereby admitting of the pin riding into and out of the grooves 27 so that bolt may be turned independently of the tumbler when it is required to change the combination. When the sleeve 22 is turned to the right by means of the knob 25 the tumbler 20 is moved longitudinally so as to retract its contracted end and when the end of the opening 21 adjacent the contracted end of the tumbler comes in contact with the spindle 9 the tumbler and sleeve 22 turn together and when the tumbler reaches the position with its contracted end opposite the cutaway portion 13 in the rim of the rotary lock bolt, this being determined by the pointer of the knob 25 and the graduations on the dial 7, the sleeve 22 is rotated to the left by means of the knob 25, with the result that the tumbler is moved longitudi nally to project its-contracted end into the cutaway portion 13 of the lock bolt and against the end of one or the other of the dogs projecting into said cutaway portion. The tumbler is prevented from turning by the projecting end of the pin 26 entering one of the grooves 27 After the dog 15 or 16 has been repressed so as to clear the end of the rim or flange 12 bordering upon the cutaway portion 13 both knobs 25 and 10 are firmly grasped between the thumb and fingers of the hand and the sleeve 22 and spindle 9 rotated so as to bring the cut-away portion 13 opposite the catch 4: when the part 1 may be swung open.
From the foregoing description,

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
1. A permutation lock comprising a r0- tary lock bolt having a cutaway portion in its rim, a locking dog arranged to enter the cutaway portion in the rim of the rotary lock bolt, a tumbler mounted independently of the rotary lock bolt and adapted to elfect disengagement of the dog therefrom, and independent operating means for the lock bolt and tumbler.
2. In a permutation lock the combination of a rotary lock bolt, a locking dog for securing the same, a tumbler mounted to retate with the lock bolt and having an independent sliding movement to effect disengagement of the locking dog therefrom, and independent operating means for the lock bolt and tumbler.
3. In a permutation lock the combination of a rotary lock bolt, a locking dog therefor, a tumbler mounted to rotate with the lock bolt and to receive a sliding movement, interengaging means between the tumbler and lock bolt, an independent operating means for the lock bolt and tumbler.
4. In a permutation lock the combination of a rotary lock bolt, a locking dog therefor, a tumbler mounted both to rotate and to move longitudinally, a spring actuated pin carried by the tumbler, a series of radially disposed guides provided upon the lock bolt to cooperate with the spring actuated pin of the tumbler, and independent operating means for the lock bolt and tumbler.
5. In a permutation lock the combination of a rotary lock bolt, a locking dog therefor, a tumbler mounted both to rotate and to move longitudinally and provided with rack teeth, a spindle for operating the lock bolt, and a sleeve mounted upon the spindle and provided with a pinion in mesh with the rack teeth of the tumbler to move the latter longitudinally.
In a permutation lock the combination of a rotary lock bolt comprising a disk and a rim, the latter having a cutaway portion, a locking dog having a part adapted to enter the cutaway portion in the rim of the lock bolt, a tumbler mounted both to rotate and to move longitudinally, interengaging means between the tumbler and lock bolt, and independent operating means for the lock bolt and tumbler.
7 In a permutation lock the combination of a rotary lock bolt comprising a disk and an offstanding rim having a cutaway portion, a locking dog therefor, an operating spindle for the lock bolt, a sleeve mounted upon the spindle and provided with a pinion, a tumbler having an elongated opening to receive said spindle and sleeve and provided with rack teeth meshing with said pinion, a spring actuated guide pin mounted upon said tumbler and cooperating guides provided upon the lock bolt.
8. A permutation lock comprising a keeper having a catch formed with a curved portion, a rotary lock bolt comprising a disk and an offstanding rim, the latter having a cutaway portion to receive the keeper and admit of the rim engaging the same, spring actuated locking dogs to enter the cutaway portion of the rim of the rotary lock bolt, a tumbler mounted to rotate and to move longitudinally, a spindle for operatingthe lock bolt, a sleeve mounted upon the spindle and having a pinion, rack teeth provided upon the tumbler and in mesh with the teeth of said pinion, said lock bolt having radially disposed guide grooves, and a spring actuated guide pin carried by the tumbler and adapted to cooperate with any one of said guide grooves.
