DE VILLOSJ-PBZETT, or BINGHAMTON, NEW Yomc.
MEAhi'S FOR-OPEBATINGH'HE DATCHEQ OF EMERGENCY'DOO'RS ANDtTEEiLIKE.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, DE VILLO S. Pna'rr, a citizen; of'the' United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Brooine and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful-Improvements in Means for Operating the Latches ofiEmergency-Doors and the Like, of which the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in means for operating the latches of emergency exit doors, and
the object of my invention istoprovide a construction in which pressure applied against a part attached to thelatch in the direction to cause the door to open will turn the latch ahd unlock the door. 1
' A further object of my invention is to pro vide a device of this character which will be simple in construction, positive in operation and not unsightly when in position.
With these and other ob ects in View my invention consists in certain constructions,
- combinations and arrangements of parts, the.
preferred forin of which. will be first described .in connection with the accompanying drawings and then the invention particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing wherein the samepart is designated by the same r efer-' Fence numeral wherever it occurs, Figure 1 1s a perspective viewv of apQrtio-n of-a door equippedwith the preferred form of my in vention;Fig.2 is a cross section through the door,showing my invention in top plan;
Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section through the door; Fig. 4 a perspective view of portions detached and separated and Fig. :5 is a section takenon line 5, 5 of Fig. 2, and
.40 looking in the direction of the arrow. 7 v
'-1O designates a door which is hung so as "to-swing outwardly, or away from the side, illustrated in'Fig. 1. The latch for the'door comprises a casing 11, having .a 'bolt 12 which is'pressed outwardly by means of a spring. The innerend of the bolt is shown as forked, and the forks at their ends' carry the legs 13, adapted to be engaged by- 1 Specification of L'e'ttersPaten-t.
Patented hEar."25, nits.
Application filed October 10, 1912. Serial No. 724,999.
The means for turningthev sleeve 15 com-' prises a bodyportion 17 from one end of which extends a squaredpoi'tion 18 adapted to enter the square openings 16 of the sleeve 15. The body portion'l? is-fonmedv with a pair of spiral longitudinally extending cams 19, andwat the-outer end-thebody portion is preferably provided with the head 20. From this construction it will be seen that rotation of parts -17 wi'll. rotate the sleeve 15 and operate the boltioflthe-latch.
- Hinged to the inner face-ofthe door is a bar 21, the bar being hingedtoxhqdoor at one end by*. means of:the hinge 22, andcarrying at its opposite end ithe -fonk..23','ithe prongs of the fork being inwardly turned,
as shown .at.24, and the portions 24 are adapted to engaget-he spiial'cal'nsltl on'the body portion 17.
25 indicates aspring secured atone end to the door and bearing at its other end against the bar 21, whereby the parts are normally held in' position, with the bolt-ex tending from the door as shown in Fig. 1.
When, however, thebar 21 is;;pressed, the
inwardly extending portions will engage the cams l9, rotating the sleeve 15 and operating to draw the bolt and unlock the door. In order to support the bar 2 1,and cause it to move I have shown the bars guided by a-bracket 26 secured to the'door and on which the bar slides. I have also shown a ."latch 27 pivoted to the door'and adapted to be swung into the path of one of'the cams '19, as best shown in Fig. 5, to lock the bolt in position and prevent the door from being latched.
o I realize that considerable variation is pos- ,sible in the details of construction and arrangement of partswithout departing from thespirit of my invent-ion, and I therefore do not intend to' limit myself "to'thespeeific form shown and described.
Having thus described my invention what Iclaim asnew and'desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 7
1. In a means for operatin the latches of emergency doors and the like, the combination with 'a door, of a. lock having a bolt, a rotatable part adapted to operate the bolt, a part extending from said rotatable part. and rovided with a spiral (321111,.3- bar ivote to the door,'and a fork carried by tlie bar to engage said spiral earn, said parts being constructed and arranged to cause the bolt to be withdrawn and the door unlocked when the bar is pressed toward the "door. c
2., In a means foroperating the latches .of emergency doors and the like, the combinationwith a door, of a Iock having a bolt,
,9. rotatable part adapted to operate the bolt,
" a part extending from said rotatable'part at one endto the door, a fork carried bythe provided with a-spiral cam, a bar pivoted other end and. having inwardly projectingexte'nsionsadapted to engage the spiralc'am, andr agspringinterposed between the 7 bar and thezdoor, said parts being connected and arranged toca'use theboltto be with-f drawn andfthe door-unlocked when the bar is pressed toward'the door. 1,.
3. In a means 'foroperating the latches 'ofemergeney doors and the like,'the combination with a door,of1a lock having a bolt, a rotatable sleeve adapted to engage the bolt to operate the same, a part connected to said rotatable sleeve and provided with a spiral cam, said-patrt beihg'alsoprovided with an outwardly extending head, a bar pivoted to thedoorv at one end, a fork extending fromthe opposite ends of the bar, said fork being provided with inwardly'projecting portions adapted to engage the spiral cam.
4, In a means for operating the latches of emergency doorsfand the like, the combination with .a door, of a lock having a bolt,
a rotatable part vadapted tooperate the bolt,
a part extending from said rotatable part and provided with a spiral cam, a'b'ar pivoted tothe door, a fork carried by the bar to engage said spiral. cam, said parts being and means adapted to be swung into the .constructed and arranged, to cause the bolt to be withdrawn and vthe door unlocked when the'ba-r is pressed toward the door,
pathof said cam to look the'bolt'in position v
