Be it known that I, SARAH FANNIE W'isn- MAN, as eXecutriX of the estate of PHILIP S. VISEMAN, late a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Chio, do declare that the said PHILIP S. VIsnMaN did invent a new and useful Improvement in Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in padlocks and the principal object is to provide a padlock with a plurality of tumblers each having a locking 'dog one of which has a cooperating .and interlocking tumbler which necessitates its operation by a slotted key.

It is also an object to provide a padlock with a positive acting shackle throw connected with one of the tumblers.

It is a further object to provide a` padlock with a shackle in which the tension on the same will draw the dogs in closer engagement.

Ieretofore in the operation of padlocks the shackle sometimes sticks and a jar or pull on the shackle will release the locking dogs from engagement therewith, and in padlocks in which flat keys are used the insert-ion of an ordinary blade is frequently sufficient to pick the lock. This invention overcomes the objections recited above and provides positive operating means in connection with the tumblers to throw out the shackle. The locking engagement of the dog is such that any pull more closely engages the dogs, and by means of a slotted key it is impossible to pick the lock with a flat blade.

In the drawings, 8 represents the casing of the padlock, of common form, on the eX- tensions 10 of which is pivoted the shackle 11 of the general ring configuration, provided with the nose l2 with a deep set recess 13 to engage the dogs on the tumblers pivoted within the walls of the casing. The parts of the padlock are preferably formed of noncorrodible metal and the general construction of'the casing is as shown and described in prior United States Patent No. 647,592, and inside of the end wall of the casing are pivoted the series of .tuniblers composed of a pair of side tumblers 15 and an intermediately placed tumbler 1G, `these three tumblers being pivote'd on the pivot pin 17 secured in the casing. The side tumblers 15 are each provided with a locking dog 1S, this dog also registering with a similar dog on the intermediate pin and it is necessary to registereach of these three dogs to release the shackle. The side tumblers are of the general configuration shown in the different views, having a peculiar shaped slot cut in its: lower edge, the recess being of such shape asv to leave the key lug 19 and the guide arm 20. The intermediate tumbler 1G is also providedwith a locking dog 18 and is pivoted on the pin 17 intermediate of the two side tumblers 15, and its configuration lacks the slotted portion of the side tumblers, and is provided with the arm 21 which registers in the path of the inner portion 22 of the shackle 11 and bears upon this latter to positively open the shackle when the tumblers are released. It is also provided with the arcuate recess 23 which is adapted to engage the head portion 24 of the interlocking tumbler 25. rlhis tumbler is pivoted on the pivot pin 2G in the same relative plane as the pivot pin 17. This tumbler 25 is slotted below the head 24rleaving the luO' 27 on its dependent portion.

The key 28 is a flat key, as clearly shown in the different views, provided with the head 29 which is preferably flattened along the outer portion, provided with an opening to secure the same to the ring, the principal feature of the form of the key being' the closed slot 30 through which the lug 27 must pass in order to release the tumblers. The key is provided with open slots cut in the side 31, which are adapted to receive the lugs 19, and the lug 32 which engages on the surface of the interlocking tumbler 25, the shoulders 33 adjoining the lug engaging with the inner edge 34 of t-he side tumblers 15.

A suitable spring 35 secured in the casing bears on the surfaces 36 of the three tumblers and forces the dogs into automatic locking position when the shackle is forced into this latter relation.

As will be readily seen, by the introduction of a flat blade, if it is of such width as to allow the lugs 19 to travel across the path of the releasing structure, the lug 27 would not be able to pass the object introduced and the unlocking of the padlock would be prevented. The dogs are also pro-vided with the extended lips which securely engage in the recess 13 in the shackle, and this close contact prevents any disengagement of the dogs, and tension on the shackle draws the dogs in closer contact, the padlock being practically unpickable and peculiarly efficient as a securing means of this character.

What is claimed is:

l. A padlock, comprising a pair of tumblers provided with locking dogs and key lugs, a tumbler having a locking dog interposed intermediate of said pair of tumblers, and a cooperating tumbler engaging with said interposed tumbler provided with a -lug crossing the path of said lugs on said pair of tumblers.

2. A padlock, comprising side tumblers provided with locking dogs and key lugs, an intermediate pivoted tumbler coperating therewith provided with a locking dog and a shackle tripping arm, and an interlocking tumbler engaging said intermediate tumbler, provided with a key lug adapted to cross the path of the key lugs on the side tumblers.

3. In a padlock, in combination with a plurality of side tumblers provided with lugs adapted to swing in a defined path an intermediate tumbler having a lug adapted to cross the. path of said other lugs, of a slottedl key to register with and provide for the movement of said lugs, and a plurality of shoulders on said tumblers to engage with said key to actuate said tumblers.

4t. A padlock, comprising a casing, a pivoted shackle, a plurality of pivoted shackle locking tumblers mounted on said casing, a pivoted shackle tripping tumbler'intermediate said shackle locking tumblers, having a recess formed under its shackle tripping arm, an interlocking pivoted tumbler intermediate said shackle locking tumblers having a head adapted to engage in said recess,

and means to engage said pivoted locking shackles and said interlocking pivoted tumbler, whereby said interlocking tumbler operates said shackle tripping tumbler.
