i Specification of Letters Patent.
ramm n 11, 1914.
East Haven, county of New Haven, and
StateofConnecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Padlocks,
of which the following is a full, clear, and
exact description. 1
This invention relates to padlocks, and more particularly to padlocks having sliding shackles or hasps.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple, efficient form of padlock combining maximum security with maximum ease and cheapness of manufacture. 1 v
To this and other ends the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed; 1
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a padlock embodying my invention, the shackle being closed, Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, with one of the case sections and the key escutcheon removed, Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the tumbler partly released by the key, Fig. 4 is a similar view, showing the shackle in its open position, Fig. 5 is an edge view of Fig. 2 taken at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the shackle, Fig. 6 is a fragmentary section on line 6 -6 of Fig.
5 looking upward, Fig. 6 is a section on the same section line looking downward, Fig. 7 is a detail side view of the tumbler, detached, Fig. 8 is a detail bottom view of the tumbler, Fig. 9 is a detail perspective view of the ward, Fig. 10 is a detail perspective view of the key escutcheon, and Fig. 11 is a detail of the key.
Referring to the drawing, the casing 20 of the padlock therein shown, is of generally circular shape and divided, as usual, into sections 21 and 22. The sections 21 and 22 are secured together by the usual posts 23, 24 and 25. The case is cut away at one edge, as shown at 26, to create a recess in which a shackle 27 is slidable. The shackle 27 is provided with a shank 28 within the case and a hook-shaped head 29 slidable into and out of the recess 26. The shank 28 of the shackle is guided in thecase by means of the post 24 and the shackle is normally held by a spring 30 in the outwardly projected position shown in Fig. 4. The spring A. PACE, a
30 is constituted by a coil of spring wire connected at one end with the post 23 and at the other end with a hook 31 on the inner end of the shank 28. i 1
The shackle 27 is locked in its innermost 'posltlon (Figs. 1 to 3) by means of a pivoted tumbler 32. This tumbler may be conveniently mounted on the pin or post 25, and 1t 1s arranged to swing in the plane of the shackle toward and away from oneedge of the shank 28. A spring 33 interposed between the outer edge of the tumbler 32 and the wall of the case urges the tumbler toward the shackle so that a shoulder 34 on the intermediate portion of the tumbler may engage a cooperating shoulder 35 projecting laterally from the shank 28 whereby the shackle will be locked in its closed pos1t10n.
Associated with the free end of the pivoted tumbler 32 is a ward 36 (Fig. 9). This ward is preferably stamped up from a single piece of sheet metal into substantially U-shape. One legfiof the U is. provided with lugs 37 adapted to enter correspondingly shaped holes in the case sections, as shown in Fig. 1, so that after the ward has been placed in position between the case sections and the latter have been secured together by the posts 23, 24 and 25 the ward will be rigidly held against displacement. The same leg of the U-shaped sheet metal member is also formed to present a ward portion 38 adapted to be cleared by notches 39 of a suitably bitted key .40 (Fig. 11). The other leg of the U-shaped sheet metal piece is formed with a perforated lug 41 adapted to receive the reduced end 42 of the key and thereby constitute a key bearmg.
The key 40 is insertible through a key escutcheon 43 interposed between the case sections 21, 22 at a point out of alinement with the axis of the shackle, and it will be noted that the key escutcheon and the ward member 36 are so arranged that the keyway is sub stantially in the plane of the shackle, with its axis directed at an acute angle to the axis of the latter. The free end portion 44 of the tumbler 32 overlies the ward member 36, as 105 when the shackle is in the open position. The 110 end portion 44 of the tumbler is of reduced thickness as compared to the body portion thereof and-at-itsufider u faeaimmeqi ay over the key receiving portion of the ward member 36, it is provided with a tapered shoulder or surface 47 adapted to be engaged by the bit 48 of the k in t t bearing 41'."-
- The operation of thedevice is substantially as follows: Supposing that the shackle is closed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and it is desired to open the' padlock, the key 40 is inserted in thema'nner shown in Fig. 8; The shank of the key is of sinuous cross-section and the, keyhole 43.?bf the es'cutcheon or plug 43 is of corresponding shape so that a false key, will not be admitted; The inner reduced end 42 of the key seats in the bearing 41 and as the key is turned on its axis the notches39 clea the Ward portion 88 and enable' the" bit 48 to engage'the beveled shoulder 47 on the extremity of the tumbler 32; Asthe shoulder 47 is. substantially parallel'to tlie'key' bit and as the key extends at an acute angleto the general direction of the tumbler32fthe engagement of the key bit with the shoulder4 7 1 Will" cause thetumbler to 'bethrownout-g Wardly. with're'spect to the shank of" the shackle, as shown in Fig. 3. As thejtunibler continuesit's outward movement the shoulder 34 thereof will disengage the shoulder 85' of the shackle, 'ancl'the'shackle will thereupon be immediately projected into its open pos'ition bythe spring 30, as shown inFig. 4 As the tumbler is released by the key,"th'e tumbler will be returned to its initial position by the' spring The shoulder 45' on theend of thetulnbler will engage the shoul- (161' or abutment 46 onthe' wardmember, as
.1 shown in'Fig. 4. In this position an inclined surface at one edge of the tumbler shoulder 34 will lie in the path of a similar inclined h e iss tatedi I ,Withdut'limiting t li k s is Pu h inwars th shel l ler 35 will en ag mesht1der34jani thereby u'sh snaps over to theother side of the shoulder 3 5 "at which time the shackle will again be locked in its closed position. v V
myself to the construction shown, I claim-:3
1. In a padlock, the combination of a shackle, a pivoted tumbler cooperating therewith, and a substantially U-shaped ward niemberiextendingbeneath the free extremity of said tumbler and having, oppositelyextending. lugs .td position ifibetwn' the case sections; substantially as described; v w 2. ln-apadloclgthe combination with separate case sections and means. to secure them together, of a substantially u-shap'edimembe'r held place between said, sections "and having a key bearing at: one side, aind'a Ward portion at the other side ;"sub s tantial;lym as? described.
" 3. In a padlock, the combination of a shackle, a pivoted tumbler; cooperating there;- with, and a member lying beneath the free end of said tumbler' and having a key hearing and stopshoulder for the tumbler; substantiallyas escrihed'. T t
4. In a padlock, the combination of a shackle, a pivoted tumbler, cooperating therewith,a nd a single member adj acentthe" free end of said tumbler'havingja key bearinga ward portion and a stop shoulder-for the tumbler; substantially as described;
