LOCK
Filed My 1s, 1928 Patented May 13, 1939 EMIEL Rr FOX, OF OAKWOOD, NEW YORK LOCK Application. led May 18,
My invention has reference to locks and more particularly locks used ontrunlts, luggage and similar articles.
The object oit my invention is to produce 5 a lock which locks automatically and alwaysV remains in locked condition until opened by a lrey, and the lock is so constructed and designed that upon the withdrawal of the key, the lock automatically closes again.
In the annexed drawing in which I have shown, by way of illustration, an embodiment of my lock, Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing a portion of the casing broken out, while Fig. 2 is a section along line II-II in Fig. 1.
1 is the casing and 2 the rotatable barrel extending into the casing and adapted to receive the key indicated at 3.
At its inner end, the barrel is provided with a double cam indicated at 4 provided with the 530 two raised faces shown in Fig. 2 at 5 and6. Y
At 7 and 8 in Fig. 2 are shown the two locking bolts adapted to engage and enter into two apertured members 9 and 10 respectively,
J provided on a lug, or lugs, (not shown) and 25 adapted to enter the casing 1 through slots 11 and 12 respectively.
The locking bolts 7 and 8 are each provided with a part extended at right angles from said locking bolts and respectively designated, 13
39 and 1li. These parts, as will be seen from Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, when the locking bolts are in locking position bear against the lower portions of cam l and they are held in this position respectively by springs 15 and 35 16 'fastened to partition walls 17 and 18, re-
spectively inside casing 1.
At 19 is shown aguide for the locking bolts 7 and 8. Y
II- by the key 3 shown in Fig. 1 being in 53' seited in the barrel 2, the barrel and thereby the cam 4 is turned in the direction indicated by the arrow, the two locking bolts by means of the raised portions 5 and 6 of the cam engaging the portions 13 and 14 will be pushed r la y against the action of the springs 15 and 16 in the direction of the small arrows shown iii Figs. 1 and 2, thereby releasing the apertured members 9 rand 10 which now can be' pulled out of the casing through the slots 11 and 12.
5C As soon as the pressurek on the key is re'- 1928. Serial No. 278,665.
PATENT orrics A leased, the springs 15 and 16 will immediately move the locking bolts 7 and 8 back into the* positions shown in Fig s. 1 and 2, at the same time moving the cani back to the position also shown in the drawing. As shown in Fig. 2 at 20 and 21 respectively,
allow the two members 9 and 10 to be pressed entirely into the casing to be engaged by the locking bolts as shown in the drawing.
The members 9 and 10, where the lock is used on a trunk, are supposed to be fastened to or be formed integral with a hinged member secured to the lid of the trunk. Of course,
each member 9 and 10 can be separately hinged to the lid.
While I have shown an embodiment ot' my invention, Ido not, of course, limit myself to the exact'construction, because various details therein may be modiied wit-hout a departure from my invention.
I claim:
` Alcol: of the type described, comprising a casing having slots adapted tofadmit members to be held in a lo partitions in said casing sliding bolts disposed in said casing so as to engage said members,
cked position therein,
and each of said bolts having an arm extending at right angles, guiding means for said bolts, leaf springs secured to said partitions adapted to normally hold said bolts in engaging position, said leai' springs being ot U- shape with one of the legs secured to said partition and the free legs thereof positioned in normal abutting relation to said arms upon said bolts, and a cylindrical barrel rotatably mounted in said casing, and having a-doiible p acting cam portion, saidbarrel beingadapted to be rotatedby a key inserted therein to simultaneously move said sliding'bolts out of their engaging position by the pressure exerted by said cam portion In testimony `whereo on said arms.
