To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Gus SnonRs'rnAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farragut, in the county of Fremont and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in latches.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a latch which will be of simple construction and operation, as well as highly etlicient in use.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a latch of this character which will be composed of a minimum number of parts and in which the locking bolt may be readily turned after being withdrawn and engaged with the out-turned end of the bolt supporting and guiding plate to hold the bolt in withdrawn position.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is an elevation of a dumping end gate having my invention in operative position thereon, and
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view of the end gate, and showing a latch constructed in accordance with my invention applied thereto.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, 1 designates the main board of the end gate and 2 the side members, while 3 designates the transverse brace bars mounted upon the outer face of said main board 1. The dump board 1 is hinged to the central transverse brace bar 3 by suitable hinges 5 and serves when in closed position to close the opening 6 in the lower portion of the main board 1. Suitable metallic plates 7 are secured upon the ends of the lower transverse bar 3 and provided with outwardly directed apertured ends 8 adjacent the sides of the opening 6, it being understood that the central portion of the lower transverse brace bar 3 is separated from the ends thereofand secured to the outer face of the dump board at, a short distance from the lower end of the latter. It will also be understood that an additional central brace bar 3 is secured to the end gate with the main or central portion of said additional central transverse brace bar mounted upon the dump board 4 and the ends of the same projecting past the sides of said dump board 4 as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The above construction is recited for the purpose of illustrating the application of my latch, two of which are shown in this instance. The latch consists of a bolt-supporting and guiding plate 9 which has its outer end bent back upon the main portion of the plate 9 and extended outwardly, as shown at 10. The opposite end of the plate 9 is also extended outwardly as at 11, and in parallelism with the part 10. The outwardly directed ends 10 and 11 are provided with registering openings to accommodate the bolt 12. An expansible spring 13 encircles the bolt 12 between the ends 10 and 11 of the plate 9 and has one end positioned against the end 11 while its opposite end bears against the pin 14: engaged through the bolt 12. This pin 14 also serves to limit the movement of the bolt 12 in one direction. The bolt is preferably formed of a single bar of metal having one end bent to provide a loop or hand engaging member 15. The bolt 12 may be held in retracted position by rotating the same after it has been retracted, until the loop 15 abuts the part 11 of the plate 9. As soon as the loop 15 is released from the ends 11 of the plates 9, however, the spring 13 will project the bolt 12 outwardly and through the apertured end 8 of the plate 7, assuming dump board 4: to be in closed position. The forward end of the plate 9 is provided with an aperture 16 through which the end 8 of the plate-7 projects when the dump board 1 is in closed position.
This embodiment of the invention is merely illustrative and I wish to here state that the construction herein disclosed may be modified in many difierent respects that may be fairly embodied in the scope of the appended claim.
