SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,414, dated July '7, 18 96.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES N. RICHARD- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belvidere, in the county of Boone and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Ties, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of bagties in which a chain is employed; and it consists of a plate secured to the bag by projecting prongs, the plate having a slot communicating with a countersunk opening, the chain connected to the plate at one end and one of the links of the body of the chain located in the countersink.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of a bag with my improved tie in position holding the bag closed. Fig. 2 is an isometrical representation of the plate. Fig. 3 is an isometrical representation of the washerplate. Fig. 4. is a vertical section through the bag and plate, showing their connection.

To the bag l is secured a plate composed of two sections 2 and 3, bent at right angles. Section 2 has a perforation 4: at its end and two prongs 5, bent at substantially right angles to the length of the section. Section 3 has a central opening 6, countersunk on its inner face, and a slot 7, extending from the opening to the lower edge of the section. A chain 8 has a connection with the section 2 by one of its links passing through the hole 4.. The plate is secured to the bag by forcing the prongs through the bag. A washer-plate 9, having an opening 10, is placed upon the prongs by the prongs passing through the openings. The prongs are then bent toward each other, as shown at Fig. 4. The chain is passed around the neck of the bag and tightly drawn, and the small portion of one of the links is passed through the slot 7 into the countersunk central opening 6, when the link will seat itself in the opening, thereby preventing the disengagement of the chain with the plate, and in order to unite the bag, the chain must be drawn through the countersunk opening until the center portion of the link will pass through the slot.

I claim as my invention- 1. In a bag-tie, the combination of a plate composed of two portions bent at right angles, a chain attached to one portion, said portion having two projections, the other portion having a center countersunk recess, and a slot extending transversely to the length of the portion permitting the passage of the chain into the central opening said plate secured to a bag by the projection passing through it and bent on the inside.

2. In a bag-tie, the combination of a plate composed of two portions bent at right angles, a chain attached to one portion, said portion having two projections, the other portion having a central countersunk recess, and a slot extending transversely of the length of the portion permitting the passage of the chain into the central opening, said plate secured to a bag, and a washer-plate receiving the prongs, and against which they are bent.
