ABDOMINAL surronr.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6, 1916.
Application filed January 21, 19 14. Serial No. 813,466.
Be it known that I, HELEN J. Hun'r'r'unn, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga' and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Abdominal Supports, of whichthe following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from otherinventions. V
This invention while having general reference to an abdominal support, is more particularlyassociated with means in connection therewith adapted for adjustment so as to lie snugly against the lowermost portion of the abdomen of the wearer, that is, along the groins to the point of meeting with the front end of the crotch.
A further object resides in the provision of an independent adjusting medium and still another in the provision of means for preventing the displacementfof said first mentioned means. I
Heretofore bands have been devised for mb a ng h abdominal p rts. ase Whol but not the lowermost portion thereof wh ch,
' latter is in fact the region of the body fro quently in greatest need of suspension. Marketed articles of this character, in so far as I am aware, tend to bind a major surface of the abdomen with a nearly uniformly applied constricting force, in consequence pressing downwardly as much as otherwise.
As contradistinguished, my construction while enveloping certain surrounding parts of the anatomy forthe purpose of holding the whole in place, has the essence of its idea associated with the exertion of a specific localized binding eifect of variable intensity along the previously stated area. If worn under a corset it efiectually overcomes the harmfulness of this conventional structure and in so doing -affords fleshy women a feeling of security and strength. To pregnant women it is a source of pronounced relief and comfort. My invention moreover accomplishes the result sought with a construotion'that is simple and economical of manufacture and throughout of durable yet soft washable material.
The inventive conception is embodied in means which are hereinafter explained and variously combined in the claims, while the annexed drawing and particular description thereof together set forth in detail certain means constituting 'my invention, the disclosed means, however, being but one of yario-us mechanical forms in which the principle of my invention may be applied.
Figure I is a perspective view showing a support embodying my invention applied to the body. Fig. II is a front elevation, of the invention: Fig. 111 is a rear elevation of the same. I
The construction comprises a belly portion A provided on each side with a downwardly extending slit forming two complementary, fiaps'a; Oneof theseflaps is provided with buttons a and the other with correspondingly spaced holes a for the in-- sertion ofnsuch buttons. The lowermost front edge a of the belly' portion A conforms substantially to the groins of. the wearer as has been earlier remarked and as appears in Fig. I ofthe drawing.x v, My support furthermore involves'a pair of short leg portionsB having lower openings b a-ndalso having their adjacentiln ner sides slitted for a given distance as clearly indicated in Fig. 11. The front end of the crotch of the leg portions isv designated jby the reference character 12 and the I hind end of such crotch has been designated as The purpose of the leg portions is solely to prevent a slipping upward on the -part of my support in its entirety. Intermediately of the belly portion A and leg portions B is a reinforcing band C. According to my express intent, the front part of the band C is divided in its middle to comprise two downwardly converging parts 0. These parts should substantially follow the line of the groins. They therefore extend downwardly directly toward the forward end of the crotch. The band C is,
sewed to the portions A and B throughout its entire length save near the junction of its two ends at the front part of the crotch b At this point the opposite ends of the band- C are left free to form straps 0 having eyelets 0 whereby they may be drawn together through the medium of lacing 0 The belly portion'A is provided on its rear side with an adjusting agency D comprising an upright slit having two reinforced opposed edges (Z wardly' alined eyelets 0Z These may be similarly drawn together or released as the requirement may be,
through the medium of 12 11 3; d
provided with upi i It should now be apparent that after the support as a whole has been applied so as to loosely envelop the abdominal parts generally, the side buttoning may be effected and then the rear lacing manipulated until the belly portion is made to snugly fit though not constrict the abdomen of the wearer. Thereafter, the straps 0 are drawn together to cause the converging lengths 0 to become tightly spanned, and this independently of sufficient thoroughness, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and therefore claim specifically, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, an abdominal support comprising an inelastic belly portion provided on each side with a slit extending a given distance from the up per edge and forming flaps to permit of opening and applying said Support, and complementary fastening contrivan'ces on said flaps respectively, a reinforcing band secured to. said inelastic belly portion and extending entirely around and below said slits, said band furthermore sloping downwardly in a forward direction to follow the groins of the wearer, said band being divided at the junction of the groins with the crotch of the wearer, lacing for drawing the ends of said band together, and leg encircling portions for retaining said abdominal support in position.
2. As a new article of manufacture, an abdominal support comprising a belly portion provided with a rearwardly located slit having reinforced and separated edges, laccooperating with said edges for drawing the same together to constrict said belly portion as a whole, means permitting opening said belly portion at the sides, leg portions for retainingsaid belly portion in effective proximity to the crotch of the wearer, a pair of reinforcing bands extending rearwardly over and around the hips of the wearer and downwardly in front along the groins of the wearer respectively, and lacing connecting the lowermost front ends of said bands at the meeting point of the groins with the crotch of the wearer whereby to adjust and support locally in a diagonally upward di rection.
