Description

April 1952 T. A. MUNGO Q 2,591,462

POSTURE-CORRECTIVE BRASSIERE Filed Dec. 1, 1950 INVENTOR. Thomas A.Mungo a ji ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 1, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.

The present invention relates to improvements in brassires or bust garments.

One of the objects of this invention is to pro-- vide a posture-corrective brassire of improved form and simplified construction which is simple and economical in manufacture.

It is a further object of this invention to pro vide a garment that is effective and useful as a brassiere and at the same time serves as a posture correcting garment. This garment may be manufactured from all commonly used textile materials and in all commonly used sizes for girls and women.

It is a further object of this invention to provide a garment as described which is formfitting and has features of adjustability, such as to provide proper support to the individual and to be adjustable to the requirements of the individual.

Other objects and features will be apparent and brought out more fully in the following descrpition, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a front view of the garment shown as worn, and

Fig. 2 is a rear view of the garment as worn.

The garment will hold a woman in correct posture and at the same time the garment is built and shaped so as to support the breasts properly. In combination with the brassiere part of the garment, there is a strapping part which is integrally united with the brassiere part and which supplies the posture correcting features.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, Figure 1 shows the brassiere I provided with strong and sturdy shoulder straps 2 each of which leads to one of the back panel sections 10. These shoulder straps are hemmed on the side as shown at 3 so that the strap is substantially reinforced. The garment may be provided with a frontal opening as shown in 4 so that it is usable as a maternal and post-maternal garment; however the opening 4 is optional and may be eliminated if desired. Below the lower ridge of the cups 5 there is directly adjacent thereto and forming the lower part of the cups a belt arrangement 6 which permits the adjustment of the brassire to the breast of the individual. This belt is provided so as to go around the chest of the wearer and consists of non-elastic material and is adjustable by means of a buckle 1 in the rear of the brassire, as shown in Figure 2. The shoulder straps 2 combine in the rear and are connected at 2x to a strap 8 which is preferably constructed of strong durable material. The strap 8 exerts a downward stress upon the rear part of the garment I thus affecting an additional support for the breasts and a posture-correcting effect by means of its backward pull upon the shoulder straps 2.

The strap 8 terminates in two separate sections 8x and 8am: which will form a belt reaching about the lower left and right quadrant of the wearer, the belt sections 8m, 8m: being adjusted and held together by means of a buckle 9.

When the buckle 9 is adjusted, the backward pull of the posture-correcting part of the brassiere is proportionaly decreased or increased as may be desired. The belt 6 being the lower part of the brassire portion 5 of the garment l permits an individual adjustment of the brassiere and breast support which may be controlled individually and separately from the posture support 8, integral therewith. Thus, it is possible to adjust the requirements for posture correction and breast support, independent of each other. The strap 8 will exert a downward pull from the rear portion of the brassire I upon the shoulder straps 2, while the adjustment of the belt 6 forming the lower part of the brassiere part 5 of the garment I creates a sufiicient downwardpull on the brassiere pockets 5a: and. 5m: as to prevent riding up of the breast pockets 5a: and 5mm during movements of the person or during and after adjustment of the posture-correcting part 8. The shoulder straps 2 form side and upper portions of the breast cups, said straps being designed to extend between the shoulder blades of the wearer and forming the back panels of the brassiere or shoulder brace. A strap or panel 8 is interposed between the two back panels, diverging downwardly and outwardly thereby forming a waistencircling belt. The belt 6 forming the lower part of the brassiere part of the garment exerts the necessary counter-pressure and resistance to efiectively counter-balance the rearward and downward pull of the posture supporting part of the garment 8, Ba: and Bart, so as to permit an effective, posture-correcting pull to be exerted upon the shoulders of the wearer. The shoulderstraps and the brassiere part of the garment may be made of the commonly used textile materials, such as for instance, silk or nylon, while the posture-correcting part of the brassiere is preferably manufactured of a strong material wherein the fibres are inter-woven so as to give the posture-correcting part a firmer grip on the contacting body surfaces of the wearer.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A posture-corrective brassiere comprising a pair of breast pockets for supporting and shaping the breasts of the wearer, a pair of shoulder straps each having a forward end secured to and extending from a respective one of said breast pockets, shoulder straps forming upper and side portions of the breast pockets and extending over the shoulders of the wearer, a back covering member formed as a continuation of the rearward ends of said shoulder straps and extending vertically downward therefrom to about the waistline of the garment, a pair of belt elements secured to the lower end of said back member and having adjustable means, said belt elements forming a belt adapted to extend around the waist of the wearer and at the front of the garment being spaced from said breast pockets,

whereby tightening said belt causes a downward pull to be exerted on said back member and said rearward ends of the shoulder straps.

2. A posture-corrective brassiere as set forth in claim -1 and having a second belt secured to and extending along the lower margins of the breast pockets and adapted to extend rearwardly therefrom around the lower back covering portion of the wearer, said second belt having adjustable means for tightening or loosening same.
