2 Claims. This invention relates to girdles and deals more particularly with garments of like character formed with a crotch.
The incorporation of straps, leg pieces, trunk hose and similar lower extensions into foundation and surgical garments, is at present well known. However, these earlier structures do not meet the conditions required in a garment oi mcdern design. Because of the increased athletic activities of the female and the tendency towards simplification and lightening 03 her outer garments, it is essential that her girdle or foundation garment be of neat and trim fit and appearance, and that it maintain its position on the body with little, or no restriction to freedom of movement.
In 'many essentials, the modem girdle incor- -porates these desirable features'and this invention seeks to further improve such garments by incorporating therein a crotch portion designed to suit modern needs and conditions.
More particularly, the invention deals with a girdle formed with an elastic body, the front and back panels of which are stretchable only in the length of the garment, and provided with a crotch portion formed of leg-engaging members stretchable transversely to the stretch of said front and back panels.
The invention also contemplates the provision the features of the invention. The following 45 specification, based on the drawing, more iully sets forth the design and details of the invention.
In the drawing: Fig. i. is a iront view of a girdle made in accordance with the invention'as it appears on the human form.
Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof in flat condition.
Fig. 3 is a fiat view in pattern form of the essential elements of the present invention.
In that embodiment of the invention here ilof a novel crotch for a garment of the.v character lustrated, the girdle is preferably provided with I side portions 5 and the front and rear panels respectively 6 and l, i
For a clearer understanding or the invention, the elements of the girdle are lined to indicate the direction of stretch. Thus, it may be seen 5 that the sides 5 are preferably made of ,a material having stretch both vertically and horizontally and that the panels Band l are preferably stretchable in a substantially vertical direction. 4 10 In order to. have the stretch in the front panel in the proper direction, said panel is preferably formed of two complementary parts 6a and 6b, united'by a seam 8 at the center of said panel. As best seen in Fig. 3, the direction of stretch of 15 these parts are at a slight angle to each other along said seam but predominantly vertical as shown in Fig. i. The elasticity of the front panel is thus better controlled than should said panel be of one piece with the stretch vertical.
In accordance with the invention, the adjacent portions of the bottom edges of the panel parts he and 5b are preferably angularly cut as at ii. In asomewhat similar manner the back panel Ti, at its bottom edge, is formed with the crescent-shaped notch id having the substantially straight edges ll. Thus the front and back panels are each-iormedwith a substantially V- shaped notch at the central lower edge thereof.
The crotch as herein contemplated, comprises the crotch members 62 each having a substan-* tially straight lateral outer edge 53 and formed with a curved lateral inner edge it. Each crotch member is formed with a relatively long front edge l5 and a relatively short back edge l2, the 5 former being stitched to the respective edge 9 of the front panel member @a and 6b and the latter to the respective edges ll of the back panel.
The stretch of the crotch members 82 is in the 40 length of said members but at an angle, or transverse to the stretch of the panels s and l, as iiiustrated.
It is preferred to form each crotch member wltha slightly angled edge ll between the curved edge l d and the inner end of the front edge l5 and to join said edges l? by means of a seam. This seam. on the garment, forms a lower extension of the seam between the panel parts 6a and 8b.
The crotch thus formed, in effect, converts the girdle into a panty" garment which in addi tlon to serving the normal functions of a girdle,
, also serve to confine such portions of the thighs, in certain instances, to obviate the use of other undergarments. The opening it formed in the 5 It is desired that the stretch of the component parts of the girdle and crotch not be transmitted to each other. To obviate the transmission of stretch and to reinforce the seams, inelastic tapes or other suitable means such as shown at I! may be stitched to the various seams. These tapes are preferably placed along the seams between the edges 9 and I5, at the seam between the edges l1, and at the seam between the edges H and I6.
From the foregoing it may be seen that 9. Earment has been provided which carries out the objects of the invention. It is also evident \that many immaterial changes within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed, may be made by those skilled in the art. It is intended, therefore, that the claims not be limited to the specific details of the instant disclosure.
1 What is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a garment of the character described, a front and a back panel each stretchable in the length oi. the garment, said front panel being formed of two members joined by a longitudinal central seam, and a crotch for engaging the inner thigh of each leg of the wearer of the garment,
said crotch comprising two portions stretchable in a direction transverse to the stretch of said panels, the front ends of said crotch portions being stitched to each other for a portion of their length, the seam thus formed being an extension of the mentioned seam in the front panel.-
2. In a garment of the character described. a front and a back panel, the lower. edge ,of each panel at the center thereof being formed with a crescent-shaped notch, and a crotch on said garment, said crotch comprising two members having one end of each stitched to the edge of the crescent-shaped notch in the back panel and in spaced relation to each otherand-having the other end of each stitched to the edge of the crescent-shaped notch in the front panel, said latter ends being stitched to each other for a portion of the length of said crotch members.
