Description

Jan. 10, 1956 H. FREUDENBERG 2,729,821
' PANTY GIRDLE Filed Sept. 2, 1953 INVENTOR HERMAN PBREUDENBERG ATTORNEY United States Patent PANTY GIRDLE Herman Freudenberg, New York, N. Y. Application September 2, 1953, Serial No. 378,021
2 Claims. (Cl. 2-43 This invention relates to apparel and more particularly to an under garment worn by women and known as a panty girdle, the garment being of such construction that it fits snugly about the abdomen and the legs of a person wearing it.
Garments of this general type are now in use but they have been found not entirely satisfactory as they have a tendency to creep upwardly when worn. This upward creeping movement causes the garment to apply too much compressing force about upper portions of a persons legs and the girdle is therefore uncomfortable and must be pulled downwardly so that the pressure will be relieved.
it has also been found that when a girdle of this type creeps upwardly it not only applies excessive confining pressure about a persons legs but also gathers through the crotch and forms wrinkles which are uncomfortable.
Therefore one object of the invention is to provide a panty girdle having a crotch portion of such formation that it has front and rear sections formed of soft fabric connected with each other by a seam which extends transversely at the crotch and downwardly along inner side portions of the legs of the garment, thereby permitting the crotch portion to be formed of only two sections and eliminating a seam extending forwardly and rearwardly through the crotch.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved seam for connecting meeting edges of the crotch forming sections, the seam having incorporated therein a reinforcing wire or strand which extends longitudinally of the scam the full length thereof and serves to resist upward creeping of the leg portions of the garment when it is worn and prevents stretching.
Another object of the invention is to provide a crotch portion formed of front and rear sections of such shape that when they are sewed together a crotch portion will be formed which is smooth and free from wrinkles which cause a panty girdle to be uncomfortable.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of a construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a panty girdle having incorporated therein the improved construction constituting the subject matter of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view looking at the back of the garment.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view looking upwardly at the front of the garment.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 looking at the back of the garment.
Fig. 5 is a view of the blanks from which the crotch portion of the garment is formed.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view upon an enlarged scale along the line 6-6 of Figure 2.
The body 1 of this garment has a front panel 2 and a rear panel 3 which may be formed of woven or knitted fabric and extends vertically between the upper edge of Waist band of the body and the crotch portion is indicated in general by the numeral 4. Front and rear side portions of sections 5 and 6 are preferably formed of elastic fabric and may have meeting side edges sewed together by scams 7 or the said sections 5 and 6 may be integral with each other. These side sections extend between the front and rear panels to which they are secured by seams 8 and 8 The side sections are of such length that they extend downwardly beyond the front and rear panels and form leg portions 9 for the garment. The front panel tapers towards its lower end edge 2 which is arcuate transversely of the panel and sewed to the crotch portion. The rear panel gradually increases in width towards its lower end and from approximately the hip line the side edges of this panel are then curved inwardly and merge into a lower edge 3 which has a central portion 3* formed as a reverse curve and sewed to the crotch portion. Since the rear panel is of this formation, which is shown clearly in Figures 2 and 4, there has been provided ample seat fullness and binding will not occur when a person wearing the garment leans over or sits down in a chair. The front and rear panels 2 and 3 are formed of fabric which stretches vertically and the side sections 5 and 6 stretch horizontally or circumferentially of the legs and body of the garment. Stocking engaging members are shown secured to lower edges of the leg extensions but may be omitted if so desired. It will be understood that variations may be made in the formation of the panels and the side sections as the invention resides in the crotch portion and its relation to the portions of the garment to which it is secured.
The crotch portion 4 is formed of thin fabric and consists of companion sections 10 and w each of which has two plies which may be referred to as inner and outer plies although single plies may be used. The blanks from which the sections are formed are arcuate or substantially semicircular, as shown in Figure 5, and when their inner edges 11 are sewed together they form a crotch portion which is substantially U-shaped and of such dimensions that it will fit between the leg portions of the garment with intermediate portions of the outer side edegs 12 of the sections 10 and It? sewed along the arcuate edges 2 and 3 of the front and rear panels and end portions of the said outer side edges sewed along inner side edges of the leg portions 9 of the garment. Therefore seams 13 are formed which firmly secure the crotch portion in place and the crotch portion serves very effectively as a crotch for the garment and its downwardly extending portions form inner side portions of the legs 9. The end edges 14 of the crotch portion forming members are fiush with lower edges of the side sections 5 and 6 and an inwardly disposed binding strip 15 may be applied about the lower end of each leg of the garment and eliminate raw edges. This strip reinforces lower ends or edges of the legs and eliminates likelihood of tearing. The front section 10 of the crotch portion is stretchable transversely of the garment and the rear section w is stretchable forwardly and rearwardly. This stretching action which is indicated by the arrows, serves to impart a snug fit to the garment but allows suflicient give to prevent binding. As a seam 16 formed when the inner edges 11 of the sections 10 and 10 are sewed together extends transversely of the crotch and downwardly to lower ends of the legs, any transverse stretch applied to the crotch portion 4 will be longitudinally of the seam and the stitches forming the seam will not be broken. When forming the seam a strand of nylon or other suitable material 17 which may be referred to as a wire strand is sewed into the seam and serves to brace the seam and resist upward movement of the end portions of the crotch portion and the legs of the garment of which they form portions. This resists upward creeping movement of the leg portions of the garment and prevents discomfort due to excessive binding and also prevents the crotch portion 4 from becoming wrinkled and causing the garment to be uncomfortable. A garment of the panty-girdle type has thus been provided having a crotch portion which forms portions of the legs and is of such construction that the garment will be prevented frorn creeping upwardly when worn and will remain smooth and not wrinkle or tear along the seam connecting its front and rear sections.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A garment of the panty-girdle type comprising a body having front and rear panels and front and rear side sections, said side sections being sewed to each other and to side edges of the front and rear panels, the side sections being extended downwardly and providing leg extensions, and crotch portions disposed between the leg extensions and consisting of front and rear sections having outer side edges sewed to lower edges of said front and rear panels respectively and to inner side edges of the leg extensions, and inner side edges of the front and rear sections of the crotch portion being sewed transversely to each other by a seam having a reenforcing strand enclosed therein, the front crotch portion being of a fabric stretchable in an opposite direction from the rear crotch portion.
2. The structure of claim 1 wherein the reenforcing strand is made of nylon.
