UNITED STATES PATENT orr on.
EDWARD 'I. ROBINSON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
WINDOW-SASH HAND-LE.
the production of a simple and inexpensive hand grip device adapted to be used in raising and lowering the upper sash of a.
window.
The preferred form of my invention comprises a vertical grip rod arranged alongside of a stile of the upper sash and secured to said upper sash. The vertical grip rod is preferably provided with a series of hand grip devices, and a corner of the stile is preferably cut away at a point ad acent to the grip rod as will be hereinafter described.
Figure I is an inside view 0 a window equipped with my attachment. Fig. II 1s an enlarged vertical section taken on line IIII, Fig. I. Fig. III is an enlarged horizontal section taken approximately on the line III -III, Fig. I. Fig. IVis an enlarged horizontal section taken approximately on the line IVIV, Fig. I.
A designates a window casing, B is a lower sash slidably fitted to said window casing, and C designates an upper sash slidably fitted to said casing. The upper sash is a rectangular frame consisting of stiles 1, a top rail 2, and a bottom rail 3. The lower sash'comprises a top rail 4, stiles 5 and a bottom rail 6.
E designates vertical grip rods arranged alongside of the stiles 1 'and having their upper ends arranged in socket members 7 secured to the top rail 2, the lower ends of said grip rods being arranged in socket members 7 secured to the bottom rail 3 of the upper sash. Each grip rod 1s preferably provided with a series of hand grip enlargements 8, and a corner of each stile 1 is preferably cut away to produce a series of hand-receiving recesses 9. The beveled faces 10, produced by cutting away the stiles, are separated from the vertical grip rods so that a persons hand may be easily inserted between said beveled faces and the Specification of Letters Patent. Pate ted pl 30 1916. Application filed January 28, 1915.

grip rods. The grip rods are arranged within the frame of the uppersash where they will'not in any way interfere with. the movements of the sashes, and one or both of these rods may be readily grasped in raising and lowering the upper sash.
The vertical grip rods are preferably secured to the stiles 1 by means of brackets 12, each having an eye which surrounds a grip rod E and a flange which is securedto a stile 1 by means of screws 13. These brackets 12 are arranged in vertical rows, and each bracket is preferably provided with a perforation 14 for the reception of a bolt I at the right hand side of the window are therefore provided with perforations 14 adapted to receive a latch bolt.
The sashes may be opened aslight distance and secured together by inserting the latch bolt 15 into one of the brackets 12 at the left side of Fig. I, and when both sashes are'closed they may be fastened by inserting the latch bolt 15 into the socket member 7 at the lower left hand corner of the upper sash. Each socket member 7 is provided with a perforation 17 for the reception of a latch bolt.
The vertical grip rods are so constructed and arranged that they may be readily grasped in raising and lowering the uperating the upper sash, and owing to the 10- cation of the grip rods, the power is applied where it will be most effective. To avoid the necessity of altering the sash rails 3 and 4, the grip rods and their hand grip devices 8 are arranged directly above the sash rail 3, as shown in Fig. II, where they will not strike or overlap the rail 4.
I claim 1. The combination with a window sash, of a vertical grip rod arranged alongside of a stile of said sash and secured to said sash, one corner of said stile being provided with a series of recesses and said vertical grip rod being located adjacent to said recesses and provided with a series of enlargements located at the lower ends of said recesses.
2. The combination with upper and lower a vertical row of brackets connecting said hand grip rod to the upper sash, and a slidable bolt carried by the lower sash and adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with said brackets.
