i/ZZZ 7 a fliiorneyr witnesses e o/WWW UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEINRICH J AHN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDUARD GRUIHN, SAME PLACE.
' WINDOW SASH AND FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,793, dated December 13, 1887.
Application filed March 14, 1887. Serial No. 230,783. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRICH J AHN, a citizen of Austria, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Sash and Frames, which are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 shows a vertical transverse section of a wall with a frame and window cut by a vertical plane. Fig. 2 shows a sash and window of my construction in front View. Fig. 3 shows a little more than the lower half of a window-frame, the upper part being broken away, cut by a plane, as shown in Fig. 1, but with the window shown open.
Like letters refer to likeparts.
The object of my invention is to construct a window in which the glass may be cleaned 'on both sides from the inside of the room; and to that end I construct my window as follows, namely:
Each sash consists of an outer frame, 6 (the lower) and f, (the upper,) recessed or rabbeted, so as to leave a ledge or stop, '5, on the outer side of the frame for the inner frame, 9, to
strike against. The frame 9 holds the glass h, and is held to the outer frame by butt-hinges k. Bolts or buttonsj, of any well-known construction, hold the inner and outer frames together on the edge opposite that of the hinges.
Said sash, formed of the parts 6 orfand 9,
may be hung in weights or operated as any ordinary sash between thestops b c d,- but in order to give working room, so that the upper sash may have its glass h opened as the lower one, the window-frame inside of the upper and outer sash is made higher, as shown at l.
The frames e g are shown in section in the lower sash in Fig. 1, and at the same time the frame 9 is also shown open into the room, making both sides of the glass h equally accessible.
To get at the upper light, the inner sash is first sent to the top of the frame. Then the outer sash is lowered to the bottom of the frame, and then the frame 9 may be opened, as in the former case.
\Vh'at I claim is- A window-sash formed of an outer frame having a stop, 1', on each of its four members of the frame, towhich is secured an inner frame fitting within said outer frame and against said stops by means of butt-hinges and fastening devices, in combination with a window-frame having an offset, 1, at its top inside of the upper and outer sash, substantially as specified.
