UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMBROSE C. JENKINS, vOF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-FRAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,163, dated April 28, 1874 application filed August 30, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMBEosE C. JENKINS, ofthe city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window- Frames and the Inode of raising and lowering sashes therein 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, lwhich form part of this specication.
My invention consists of a window-frame, with a Yremovable jamb at one or both sides, secured at the top in a mortise, and at the bottom by a rabbet and a locking device, s o as to allow the jamb to be pushed inward at the bottom, when desired, in order that the sash may be removed, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure 3, which is a horizontal section, shows the method of constructing` the jambs, which are simply single pieces of wood in which grooves A A are plowed, to receive corresponding projections on the sashes.
Instead of the four grooves on each side shown in the drawing, it may, if desired, be made with only two, the width of each corresponding to the thickness of the sash.
That the sashes may be removed from the frames, (which is done when the ordinary frames are used by removing the stops and parting strips, which are generally much defaced by the operation,) the jamb on one side of the window is so made that it can be loosened and set back so as to increase the distance between the jambs something more than the depth of the grooves. The sashes can then be taken out.
The movable jamb is fastened in its place by a bar, S, Fig. l, which swings on a center at B, and is operated by a stud fastened to the bar and passing through the jamb and operated by a screw-driver inserted into the slotted head of said stud.
The device shown for operating the sashes in Fig. 2 of the drawing is not claimed in this application, as I propose to make separate application for a patent therefor.
A window-frame the jambs of which are made of one piece, one of which is movable and secured by means of a mortise at the top and a rabbet at the bottom, in combination with the locking-bar S, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I cla-im the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of August, 1873.
AMBROSE C. JENKINS.
