ATTORNEYS,
N, PETERS. Fholo-Lilbogmphar, Wuhi nnnnnnn c N lTE JOHN E. JONES, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
IINDO FRAME AND SASH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,265, dated June 2, 1885. Application filed January 21, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN E. Jews of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Window Frame and Sash, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a practical window frameand sash having packing to make the sash tight; and the invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a broken perspective view of a window frame and sash constructed in accordance with my invention, one of the side boards of the frame and one of the front strips being removed; and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same.
A represents the window-sill, and B one of the side pieces of the window-frame.
0 represents the upper and D the lower window-sash, and E represents the upper board of the window-frame. Between the sashes O D are secured to the side boards of the window-frame, or to the upper board, E, and sill A, the vertical parting strips F G, each provided at front and back, respectively, with the ribs H H, of wood or metal. Atthe center of the strips F G is secured the horizon tal strip H and at the top of the windowframe is secured, between the strips F G, the strip H. The lower sash, D, is held in the frame by side strips, I, and upper and lower strips, J, and this lower sash, D, is provided at the bottom with the packing K, preferably of rubber, let into the sash, and the sash D is provided at the back with the vertical packing-strips L L, (also preferably of rubber and let into the sash,) that run against the ribs H H, as shown clearly in Fig. 1; and at the top the sash D is provided with a similar packingstrip, M, that closes against the cross-piece H when the sash is closed, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The upper sash, O, is provided at the top with the packing N, that closes against the upper strip, E, at the bottom, with the front packing-strip, O, that closes against the central bar, H and at the sides with the packing-strips P, that run against the ribs H; and the upper sash, O, is held in place by the vertical pieces Q Q and upper horizontal piece, Q. (Shown in Fig. 2.) The lower sash, D, is provided at the bottom, in front, with the wedge R, that comes against the cleat J when the sash is closed, and forces the sash back against the ribs H H, so that the packing L makes the sash perfectly tight at the sides. The strip K makes the sash D tight at the bottom, and at the top it is made tight by the packing M. The upper sash, O, is provided with a similar wedge, S, that comes against the cleat Q when the sash is closed, which forces the packing-strips 1? against the ribs H and makes the sash tight at the sides. The strip N makes the sash tight at the top, and the strip 0, coming against the central cross-piece, H makes the upper sash close tightly againstthis central bar or cross-piece, so that in this manner both the upper and lower sashes are packed at all sides, and the window is thus made tight and prevented from rattling. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The sashes provided with packing-strips at their vertical surfaces, in combination with the parting -strips F G, provided with ribs, against which the packing presses, substantially as described.
2. The parting-strips F G, provided with ribs H, in combination with sash D, provided with packing-strips L and wedge R, adapted to come against the oleat J, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
JOHN E. JONES.
