CHARLES MORGAN SMITH, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
REVERSIBLE WINDOW-SASH.
Application filed December 3, 1906.
T 0 all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES MORGAN SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Reversible Window-Sash, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to reversible window sashes and has for its object to provide a sash which can be easily and quickly reversed so that the outside can be readily cleaned or repaired when desired.
Another object of my invention is to provide the frame with hinged guide-strips so that the window can be swung outwardly when desired.
A further object of my invention is to provide the sash with spring actuated looking buttons adapted to engage the hinged guide-strips and hold them in place.
IVith these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification :Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved window, showing it swung outwardly. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the reinforcing plates. Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view of a portion of a sash showing the manner of securing the sash rope. Fig. at is a perspective view of the rope fastener. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view through the frame. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view of the frame showing the hinged guide strips. Fig. 7 is a detail sectional View of the sash showing the locking button. Fig. 8 is a similar view showing a modified form of button.
Referring to the drawings A indicates a window frame provided with rabbeted sides to which are hinged the guide-strips B and C, the strips B being hinged to the frame adjacent the shoulder A, formed by the rabbet and the strips C being hinged to the edge of the sides of the frame so that they can be swung out of the way of the sashes. Grooves A are formed in the sides of the frame in which are secured guide-strips D and between these strips and the strips B, the upper sash E is arranged which is provided with rabbeted sides centrally of which are secured spur perforated plates F, by screws, through the central apertures of which screws G are adapted to pass on Specification of Letters Patent.

which the apertured flattened ends H, of the rope fastener H are mounted which are carried by the ends of the ropes I which pass up through openings in the top of the frame and over pulleys and are provided with the usual weights I at their ends.
The lower sash J is also provided with rabbeted sides, centrally of which are secured similar plates F andv screws G on which are mounted rope fasteners H carried by ropes I which also pass up through openings in the top of the frame, and are connected to weights I. This sash is arranged in the frame between the strips B and C and holds the strips B up against the shoulder A, of the frame and the upper sash E. Recesses J are formed in the sides of the sash J in which is secured a screw K on which is mounted a button K adapted to be held outwardly by a coil spring K and up against the strips C, so as to hold the same up against the sash J, and prevent the same from swinging outwardly. It will be readily seen that by pressing these buttons in, the strips G can be swung outwardly which will allow the sash J to swing outwardly so that it can be readily reversed and that by holding the sash J out, the strips B can be turned out so as to allow the sash E to be reversed.
In the modification shown inFig. 8, I have shown an apertured plate secured over the recess in the sash J and a button L having a reduced head working through said opening in said plate and coil-spring L being arranged under the button so as to hold the same out.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a window frame, of sashes mounted in said frame, guide strips hinged to said frame, and spring actuated buttons carried by one of said sashes adapted to engage a pair of hinged strips for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a frame provided with rabbeted sides, guide strips secured in said sides, guide-strips hinged to the shoulders formed by the rabbet, guide strips hinged to the edge of the sides of the frame, sashes of different width arranged in said frame, and spring actuated bolts carried by the lower sash adapted to engage the inner pair of guide strips.
3. The combination with a window frame,
of sashes mounted in said frame provided with rabbeted sides, Weight cords secured centrally in said rabbeted sides, hinged guide-strips connected to said frame and a spring actuated button mounted in the sides of one of said sashes extending out along the side of one pair of said guide-strips for the purpose described.
4. The combination with a Window frame, of guide-strips hinged to said frame, sashes mounted in said frame provided with rabbeted sides, plates secured centrally in said rabbeted sides, cord fasteners pivotally mounted on said plates, Weight cord fasteners connected to said cords and spring actuated buttons carried by one of said sashes for locking the'outer pair of said guidestrips, for the purpose described. CHARLES MORGAN SMITH,
Witnesses: I
