SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR WINDOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 612,166, dated October 11, 1898.
Application filed April 1 2, l 8 9 8 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADELINA LEFORT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Windows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has reference to a novel con struction of safety attachment to be applied and secured to the sash-frames of buildings to enable a person cleaning the windows to safely rest against a belt or band connected with the device and thereby prevent an accident.
The principal object of myinvention,therefore,is to provide a safety attachment for windows for the purpose stated which shall'be of a very simple construction, so that the, safety-belt can be readily placed in position in any window of the building and when not intended for further use, after the window has been cleaned, can be detached from the sash-frame, rolled up, and stored away until again required.
' Other objects of this invention will be more fully set forth in the description of the. at tachment, as fully described in the accompanying specification.
The invention therefore consists in the novel construction of safety attachment for windows hereinafter set forth and in the novel arrangements and combinations of the parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, all of which will be fully described in the accompanying specification and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the window of a building with the safety attachment embodying the principles of my invention in position. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the sash-frame and sash with my novel construction of safety attachment in position and Serial No. 677,312. (No model.)
represented in top view. Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of a pair of plates employed in my novel construction of safety attachment.
Similar letters of reference are employed in all of the above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.
In said drawings, Z) represents the sill of the sash-frame b, which is of the usual construction. Secured to the opposite sides of the sash-frame b, at suitable points between the sill and the upper portion of the frame, are certain plates a, preferably of the construction illustrated more particularly in Fig. 3. Each plate a is preferably made of sheet metal and is provided with any desirable number of perforations or holes a, through which may be driven screws or nails for fastening said plates a against the inner and opposite sides of the sash-frame b, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of Figs. 1 and 2. Said plates to are also provided with any desirable number of outwardly-projecting loops or receiving-eyes, as a which are struck up in the body .of said plates or may be formed thereon many other well-known manner.

Secured in the slots 0 and around the edge 0 of eachplate c is a suitable flexible belt or protector-band o, as will be clearly seen from an inspection of said Figs. 1 and 2. To secure the said flexible belt or protector-band c in place in the window to enable the person sitting upon the sill to bear against the same with perfect safety, all that is necessary is to place the plates 0 at each end of the flexible belt or band a, one over ea'ch'plate a, in the manner hereinabove stated, and to pass a suitable rod or pin d through the openings of the said receiving-loops or receiving-eyes o in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1, and there will be no possibility of either end of the at= tachment becoming accidentally detached from the sash-frame of the Window.
In order that the rods or pins d may not be mislaid or lost after the flexible belt or band 0 and its plates 0 have been disconnected from their holding engagement with the plates at, I have provided each pin or rod d with a ring or eye 01, to which I have secured the lower end of a flexible connection cl, such as a chain, the upper end of said connection being connected, by means of a ring (1 with a suitable handle 2 on each side of the sashframe, as clearly illustrated. Said handles 6 are secured in place by means of screws 6 and also serve a double purpose in that they provide a means for holding ones self when standing on the sill while cleaning the upper sash of the window.
My invention is very simple and useful in that it is easily applied to any window and when not in use can be detached and folded for storing it away until again to be used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination, with a pair of plates a, having loops or receiving-eyes a and means for securing said plates permanently in position to the sash-frame of a window, of a pair of plates 0, having slots 0' and openings 0 to be fitted over said loops or eyes on the plates a, a belt or band 0 connected with said plates 0, and pins d fitted through said loops or eyes 0. after they have been passed through said openings 0 in the plates 0, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with a pair of plates a, having loops or receiving-eyes a and means for securing said plates permanently in position to the sash-frame of a window, of a pair of plates 0, having slots 0 and openings 0 to be fitted over said loops or eyes on the plates a, a belt or band 0 connected with said plates 0, pins fitted through said loops or eyes a after they have been passed through said openings 0 in the plates 0, a pair of handles 6 secured in position to said sash-frame, and a flexible connection between said handles and said pins d, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
