To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Tnonxs L. Ross, a citizen of the United States, residing at China Grove, in the county of Rowan, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter Latch- Guards and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as WiILenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Thisinvention relates to latch guards and more particularly to that class which are designed for use on window shutters to conceal the shutter latches and thereby prevent access to the same should an attempt be made to unlatch the shutters.

One of the primary objects of my invention is to provide a guard of this class which has its attaching devices entirely. concealed so that they cannot be acted upon to remove the guard and which cooperates with the lower rail of the lower sash for the window to conceal the shutter latches.

Broadly stated the guard comprises a pair of plates one of which is secured to each of the shutters and which overlap at their meeting ends, the plates being secured to the shutters by means of brackets which are located entirely beneath the plates and are concealed thereby it being understood of course that the plates extend above theshutter latches and from the shutters to the lower rail of the lower sash of the window.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view through a window frame, sash and shutters, showing in top plan my shutter latch guard, the latches being shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the window frame, the sash and shutters, showing the sash raised and showing in elevation the shutter latches and the guard therefor, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken through the frame, the shutters, and the lower sash, and, Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing one of the shutters partly open.

In the drawings there is shown a window including a frame 5, a lower sash 6, a shutter 7 and a shutter 8, the shutter 8 being the outer shutter or rather the one which overlaps at its outer end the shutter 7 when the shutters are both closed.

The shutter latches are indicated in general by the numeral 9 and their keepers by the numeral 10.

The guard embodying my invention comprises a pair of plates indicated by the numerals 1.1 and 12, the plate 11 being secured to the shutter 7 and the plate 12 to the shutter 8, both in a manner to be presently fully described. These plates 11 and 12 extend practically to the hinged edges of the shutters and are of such width as to extend upon the shutters to the lower rail of the lower sash 6 and above the latches 9 and their keepers 10 so as to effectually conceal the same. At its outer end, the plate 11 is extended beyond the outer vertical edge of the shutter 7 as indicated by the numeral 13 and is cut obliquely as at 14 to extend beneath the corresponding end of the plate 12 although the plate 12 terminates slightly short of the outer vertical edge of the shutter 8 and has its said end curved as indicated by the numeral 15 so as to readily pass the outer end of the shutter 7 when the shutter is open as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.

Each of the plates 11 and 12 is mounted upon the bracket 16 being located adjacent the hinged edges of the shutters and the bracket 17 adjacent their outer edges. Each of the brackets comprises an attaching portion and a portion 18 which extends at right angles to the attaching portions and beneath the corresponding plate 11 or 12 as the case may be and which is entirely concealed by the said plate. The plates are preferably riveted securely to the said portions 18 of the brackets and the attaching portions of the brackets are secured by means of screws to the shutters.

From the foregoing description of my invention it will be observed that when the sash 6 is lowered, access to the shutter latches cannot be had and most important of all, access to the attaching devices for the plates is impossible and hence the plates cannot be removed except by raising the sash 6.

While I have described the plates 11 and 12 as being secured by riveting or otherwise to the brackets 16 and 17 respectively, it will be understood that it is entirely within the scope of my invention to form the plates integral with the brackets if such construction is found advisable.

What is claimed is- 1. In a shutter latch guard, the combination with a window frame, a sash mounted therein, shutters hinged to the frame, and latches carried by the shutters, of brackets secured to each of the shutters and having inwardly right angnlarly extended portions, and plates riveted to the said portions of the brackets upon each shutter, the plates being overlapped at their meeting ends and being extended substantially to the hinged edges of the shutters and being of such width as to extend from the shutters to the lower rail of the sash within the frame.

2. In a shutter latch guard, the combination with a window frame, a sash mounted therein, shutters hinged to the frame, and latches carried by the shutters, of brackets seshutters by means of attaching brackets 16 and 17, the

portions of the brackets upon each shutter, the plate upon one shutter having its end adjacent the free edge of the shutter terminated slightly short of the said edge and curved so as to pass the corresponding edge of the other shutter, the plate upon the other shutter having its end corresponding to the curved end of the last mentioned plate extended beneath the same and beyond the free edge 10 of its corresponding shutter, the plates being extended substantially to the hinged edges of the shutters and being of such width as to extend from the shutters to the lower rail of the sash Within the frame.
