JOSEPH BOLEWICZ, 0F NAUGATUCK, CCNNECTICUT.
DEVICE FOB, OPERATING BLIND-SLATS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BoLEwIcz, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, and resident of-Naugatuck, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Operating Blind-Slats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for operating the slats in window blinds, from the inside of a building to which the blinds may be attached.
It is the purpose of my invention to provide a simple and practical form of device for turning` and thus opening or closing the pivotal slats of window blinds, when closed, without opening the window to which the blinds are hinged; to design this device so that it can be readily attached to regular stock styles of blinds for window frames with but a little amount of work.
Upon the accompanying sheet of drawings forming a part of this specification similar characters of reference denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several figures and of which,
Figure 1, shows an inside elevation of a window frame and pair of attached blinds broken away, fitted withv my improved mechanism for operating the slats as aforesaid, and Fig. 2, is a central vertical section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and better to illustrate my slat operating device.
Referring in detail to the characters of reference marked upon the drawings 5 represents a window frame which may be of the usual or any preferred construction, except that its sill 6 would be suitably cut away to accommodate the connected parts of my operating device. The blinds 7--7 are hung on each side of the frame as is customary with their vertical connecting edges meeting midway of the frame and length of the sill.
8 represents a part of a window sash shown in Fig. 2, but which in no way affects the invention as applied.
As is usual in this class of blinds the slats 9 are pivot-ally connected by a rod 10 whereby the series are turned back and forth upon the pivots 11 to open and close the same.
Specification of Letters Patent.

serial No. 523,948.
The outer pivot of the lower slat of each blind is extended through the lower portion of the outer vertical rail which latter is cut away to receive the gear 12 mounted upon each of the said extended pivots. The two gears aline with each other when the two blinds are closed as will be seen from Fig. 1, but are obviously on separate shafts and each gear serves to operate the particular series of slats in the blind with which it is connected. To one of the blinds 7 is pivoted a segment 13 the toothed face of which is formed broad enough to simultaneously engage the two gears 12 whereby they are operated together. The lower end of this segment forms a tooth 14 that detachably engages a notch 15 in the slide 16 when the blinds are closed, whereby the said segment and connected gears are operated by the movement of the slide. The slide is mounted in a suitable guide way formed in the sill and is adapted to be shoved back and forth crosswise in the sill. An operating rod 17 is connected with the slide for operating the same and is provided with a handle upon its inner end that projects through the casing so that the device may be operated from within, and without raising the sash.
With the parts in the position shown in Fig. 2, it will be apparent that a pull upon the handle and rod 17 will draw the slide in correspondingly and likewise draw in the lower end of the segment and throw out the upper end, thereby turning the two gears to open the slats. A reverse movement of the handle and rod will obviously throw the parts in an opposite direction thus again closing the slats.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a blind having a series of pivoted slats operatively connected together, a gear mounted upon the pivot of one of the slats and adapted to operate the same, a segment pivoted to the blind and engaging the gear, a slide to engage the segment, and means for operating the slide.
2. The combination with a window frame and pair of blinds having a series of pivotal slats operatively connected together, a gear mounted upon the pivot of the lower slat in each blind, a segment pivoted to one of the l' New Haven, and Stute of Connecticut this blinds and adapted to engage thehgeml', o' 20th day of October, A. Dhs, 1909. both blinds a, slide mounted in t e si o' l the Window7 frame to engage the segment, JOSEPHmfkBOLEVIC/J' and means for operating the slide from the VVtneSSes; inside of the frame. l XVILLIAM J NEARY,
